University Challenge 2014/15

Post by James Laverty »

New series starts on Monday with Manchester vs Selwyn College, Cambridge.

Any apterites on this year?
Definitely not Jamie McNeill or Schrodinger's Cat....

It's been quite a while since he was active on apterous, but Hugh Binnie seems to have made it on.

Looking forward to this series, from what I can see, it looks like there are 3-4 very strong Oxbridge teams (including Hugh's team) and if you throw others into the mix, this series could be a cracker.

Anyone else spot that the scoreboard in front of Paxo's desk started falling apart at one point last night?

Hugh Binnie in action this coming Monday in the last first round match. His Madgalen, Oxford team take on Pembroke, Cambridge with a score of 145 enough to at least make the high-scoring loser play-offs. 8-)

Fancy an apterite getting a question on the Mohs scale (although there was one mentioned that isn't used on apterous)!

Well done Hugh and Team Magdalen, your opponents gave you a good run for a fair while there until you pulled away in the end.
Mike Brown: "Round 12: T N R S A E I G U

C1: SIGNATURE (18) ["9; not written down"]
C2: SEATING (7)
Score: 108–16 (max 113)

Another niner for Adam and yet another century. Well done, that man."

I noticed that too, but there's always an obvious guess for a Lincolnshire town instead of passing (even if it wasn't the right answer).

(I'm talking about North Hykeham.)

Bit of a shame for a team with Ryan AND Jono on it to lose.

Hugh Binnie on University Challenge in a couple of minutes time for his 2nd round match, as Magdalen College, Oxford take on The Open University. ;) :) :D

Great performance again by Magdalen - two very good scores against strong teams.

Since he's not on this week, it means that Hugh Binnie's Magdalen team will be playing their first quarter-final next week, taking on the reigning champions, Trinity - Cambridge. ;) :) :D

Staggering performance by Hugh's team once again tonight. Let's see if they can do at least one better than BDC's team last year. ;) :) :D

Just for all those interested:

Hugh's next game is on March 2nd, as his Magdalen team take part in another Oxbridge match, this time against Gonville & Caius, with the winners joining St. Peter's College, Oxford in the semis. ;) :) :D

Unlucky loss for Hugh's team there, but at least they have one more chance to get through against either Bristol, Liverpool or whoever wins between Durham/Trinity, Cambridge next week (although unlikely to be Trinity, as they played them already in the QF's).

Credit where it's due - great comeback from Gonville & Caius, didn't see that coming! Still a strong show from Magdalen and as James said, another chance to progress to the semi-finals.

Trinity lost tonight, so it's either Durham, Bristol or Liverpool next for Hugh's team.

But using some sort of logic, I think they'll be playing Liverpool next Monday.

OK, logic slightly thrown out of the window. :P

Hugh's Magdalen team are back on tonight, but they'll be playing the University of Bristol in their do or die quarter-final tonight.

A win sends them into the semis, a loss sends them home....

Well, no worries there, as I suspected, and they certainly deserve their place in the semis. Hopefully, they'll be able to get their revenge over G&C at some point, although I bet they'll probably be playing St. Peter's in the semis.

Still, not long to go now, just 4 weeks until the series' end. ;) :) :D

One step towards a Magdalen/G&C rematch, and would definitely fancy G&C over Durham next week

Defo, especially after G&C creamed Durham in the quarters...

Assuming it is Magdalen v G&C in the final, let's hope revenge is on the cards. ;) :) :D

In case you missed it, G&C won the second semi-final, so the final this coming Monday is Hugh's Magdalen, Oxford taking on Gonville & Caius, Cambridge.

Let's hope for revenge and an APTO-WIN :!: :!: :!: ;) :) :D  8-)

Loveday absolutely smashed those starter questions, stellar performance!

Well done to Hugh and team for a great series and a strong showing in the final. G&C seemed like a really nice four, so I'm happy for them too!
