O specialist quiz

Post by Dinos Sfyris »

In the absence of any new Countdown shows, thought I'd compile a quiz with a twist à la Jason for everyone's entertainment/frustration/annoyance. The twist with this one being that all the answers begin with the letter O. So all those that feel they were cheated in COOT now have their chance to shine! 30 questions, 1 point for each correct answer. I shall also reward obscure knowledge, so if you are the sole person to answer a certain question correctly you get an added bonus point for that question. Answers in a pm to me please. Deadline is whenever I feel like revealing the answers. Proably Monday. Good luck! :)

1. What "O" is a gaseous compound known in chemistry as O3 (subscript 3) found in our atmosphere?
2. What "O" is a surname which links Chris, Daniel and David?

If you haven't already there's still time to take part in the O specialist quiz sensation! At this early stage in the competition the leaderboard looks like this:

1st: Jono 14
2nd: Howard 13

I haven't bothered adding on bonus points yet, as things may change when (and indeed if) more people enter.

Also after re-reading the quiz I must apologise for the questions being heavily weighted in chemistry and all things Greek! There's also a nice bundle of anagram questions in there but I shan't apologise for those!

A few more entries now. Here are the scores so far:

Jim Bentley: 25.5
A FEW CADILLAC MEANWHILE: 24
Gary Male: 20
Keith Bevins 19
Howard Somerset 15
Jon O'Neill 14

There's still time to have a go, if you haven't already, or alter your wrong answers if you've suddenly had a stroke of genius. I've decided to extend the deadline to Tuesday night, promptly at 10ish, when I will add on bonus points and reveal the overall winner :) (and what nice overalls they are as well!)

Ah - but you still have a chance to try a few more answers, Jono.

I went for four more, and got two of them right.

The one that surprises me is Keith Bevans. 20 correct last Friday, and only 19 today.

Noooo - please don't spell my surname incorrectly! So many people misspell it even when it's printed very close by. I was down on the school records as Kirk Bevan, Kirk Bevans and Kirk Bevin and then I got in the local paper for a high checkout (157) by Kirk Bevens. Every time they have copied the name from a sheet of paper and got it wrong! :(

Ulaanbaatar is the Mongolian way of saying it, Ulan Bator is the exonym commonly used in English.

Indeed that was a miscount on my behalf. Also I first counted Mr Male as 19. Although this error wasn't made public til now, they also seem to have done a Howard and Jono style switcharoo!

How can it be the answer if it doesn't begin with O? :( It's either not the answer, in which case everyone can have a little chuckle at my stupidity, or there's a pretty fundamental flaw in your quiz. Or I'm missing something else completely, in which case everyone can have a little chuckle at my stupidity.

hmmm. Maybe your right. I think the main reason why most my quizzes attracted little interest was because of the continuity of quiz after quiz. Plus, I did try to over complicate things by trying to do new quiz formats every week!

But now I have had a lenghty period without doing a quiz, I hope my two NEW quizzes will attract sufficient interest when they are released tomorrow :D

By the way, my "Can I quote you on that?" quiz did receive slightly more interest than your latest quiz effort ;) .

O dear!

82 minutes to go now til the end of what has possibly been the greatest quiz of all time, with entrants nearing double figures! A late entry from Paul Howe now puts 3 people within half a point of each other at the top spot. Remember things could all change with the addition of bonus points if you are the only person to get a certain question correct, so if you think you've suddenly remembered an answer, now's the time to add it!

This is the biggest injustice EVER IN THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD.

Nice quiz, Dinos, a good variety of subjects and difficulty-wise, pretty much exactly on my level. I thank you, sir.
