Names in Words

Post by Eoin Monaghan »

Who can get the most words in which the letters of their name are in the word.

E.g EOIN= cOrNIEst (bold letters are obviously the letters in my name)

In Scrabble you can have JOSEPH and JOSEPHs, but I think this is all I can think off, for now.

Yeah, in Countdown, there are no 6s, 7s, 8s or 9s that contain the letters J, O, S, E, P and H in some order. In short then, your name is shit.

If I shortened my name to K, there'd be quite a few as well.

You would have to shorten it as there is only 1 K in the current selection :P

Well, mine is a bit rubbish. I think shortening it to HAN would work.

Hannah only produces HOSANNAH and HOSANNAHS, which are quite nice.

Ian'll be good at this one. Maybe I should remove my objection to being called 'Nic' or 'Nik' so I can join in.

With thanks to Quinapalus Word Matcher
http://www.quinapalus.com/matcher.html
I've found the following, restricting the search to words in which my name occurs in order.
5 letters
peter
6 letters
pelter perter pester peters petter pewter
7 letters
pearter peatery peatier pelters pesters petered petters pettier pewters pleater preterm specter spelter
8 letters
expecter pargeter peltered pestered pesterer petering peterman pewterer physeter picketer pleaters preterit prettier repeater repenter specters upsetter
9 letters
appetiser appetizer carpenter epicenter expecters expediter optometer papeterie parameter pargeters peateries pedometer peltering pentamery perfecter perimeter periptery permitter perturber perverter pesterers pestering pesterous petersham petroleur pewterers phonmeter picketers poetaster polyester potometer predicter presbyter presenter pretender preterist preterite preterits pretermit preventer protester puppeteer pyrometer repeaters repenters respecter saltpeter speedster trumpeter upsetters

I've removed capitalised and two-word solutions, but haven't checked whether they're all in ODE2r

A couple of ex-workmates who shared a similar love for wordplay used to call me JUNCTIONS. I'll leave you to solve the anagram...

Using Peter's rather excellent tool:

7 letters
michael
10 letters
carmichael michaelmas
12 letters
michelangelo mischanceful multichannel
17 letters
mozambique channel
24 letters
myalgic encephalomyelitis

I got rid of a bunch of michaelmas $something ones, and suspect that almost all of those that remain are capitalised (but I can't be bothered to check right now). I also <3 mozambiquechannel.

Surely my name should win full stop. Any tools to help me find out how many words contain my name?

Not in order, my name has 1936 words up to 9 letters long, and Eoin's has a mere 4184.

There are over 20,000 words of at least 12 letters with my name in. Beat that, mother humpers.

Mine has 4437 up to 9 letters (according to the link Peter mentioned). So clearly L is marginally more useful than O, when combined with N,E,I.

If not in order, Word Matcher gives me 826 solutions up to 9 letters. (Without deleting capitalised or multi-word ones.)

I liked PETER + ARSY = SPARE TYRE

This gives an idea for a variation on the Anagrams thread. ;)

To avoid people with short names getting too much of advantage, don't add more letters than already there when making a composite anagram!
