Like, who is Anoush? I don't think this is a standard Countdown person.

Fun reading through this. Absolutely bewildering that Mark Deeks used to think audience for Countdown recordings should count. Ridiculous.

Also - Jen - can you expand on your inclusion of Paul Sinha? I think you have to spend time with him after the show for it to count, not just be in the audience for an otherly-famous thing. I'm sure you did, just checking.

I've got a pair of Dans to add to my list:
  • Ben Hunter
  • Dinos Sfyris
  • Charlie Reams
  • Mark Deeks
  • Jon O'Neill
  • Michael Wallace
  • CF
  • Matt Bayfield
  • Michelle Nevitt

Rewriting my list. (accurate as of lockdown times)

Joseph Krol, Sophie Krol (ancient/childhood friends, also you can add Emily Zhang and Wilf Carey if you count people I know from real life I've dragged to co-events as countdowners)
Callum Todd, Jamie McNeill, Zarte Jones, Jen Steadman, Andy Platt, Heather Styles, Mark Deeks and Graeme Cole, Matt Hayfield and Loz Bamer, Matty Artell, Giles Hucthings, Aidan Linge, Sara Lawson, Anoush Khachik, Tom Cappleman, Ann Dibben, Innis Carson, George Armstrong, Big Steve Anderson, Elliott Mellor, James Haughton (various meets)
Mark Hartnett (edge case I mentioned earlier which I'm gonna count even though I was there with Eddy Bryne and Gerry Tynan. Them too if you want)
Chloe Jones (non countdown related Susie Dent talk which totally counts)
Dan McColm (randomly bumped into a drunk him on the Glasgow subway, then got a drink the next day)
Jonny Rawlinson, Tanmay Dixit, Oli Garner, Dan Byrom, Mervyn Tong, Richard Freeland (uni, also put J. Krol here again)
Jason Larsen (went to his place when I was in Seattle)
Jessica Pratesi (met at events for a non word game we both play)

Almost offended you had to ask. Had a chat with him before one of his shows in London a few years ago (accompanied by my friend Imogen, who played at CO:LON 2017).

If Maus is including people he has brought to Co-events/knew prior to being a part of the community (which I don't rly think should count):
Sara Lawson, Caroline Steadman, Eleni Bohacek, Leah King, Emily Muir, Imogen Birt, James Uffindell

Disagree. Why should certain people count for some people but not others? I’m happy to accept that people who don’t really do countdown but got dragged along to the odd event shouldn’t count as countdowners, which is why I put some people in brackets above. But Joseph Krol (for example) is a Countdowner, and I have met him in real life outside of Countdown stuff, so why shouldn’t he count?

Definitely shouldn't count. This is Countdowners you've met outside Countdown stuff, I think you'd consider family and friends to be family and friends before you categorise them as Countdowners. If that makes sense.

What about, say, people I first knew through countdown but then met entirely coincidentally through other stuff? Like, Jonathan Rawlinson was my supervisor for a bit, and would have been regardless of either of our involvement in countdown. I knew him through countdown first, so by your rules I can count him, but if one of us had gotten into countdown after we’d first met I shouldn’t be able to? Makes no sense to me. The same also applies to a few other people on my list (Dan B and Jessica for instance) and presumably some other peoples’ lists as well

(Idk why I’m so invested in this either tbh)

There is definitely lots of interesting discussion to be had here. I think part of the reason that before/after makes such a big difference is because apterous (the real community rather than Countdown I think it's fair to say) is a real word-of-mouth thing. For nearly every example of someone who can say they knew someone else on apterous before apterous, the reason that person is on apterous is usually because of that someone in question telling them about it and encouraging them to get on there. I think in most of these borderline COCMEAT legality cases, it really boils down to the fact that knowing the person, and that person also being part of the community, are not mutually exclusive.

In your Rawlinson case, I'd happily accept that if you had both "found" Countdown/apterous entirely independently (after already having met) then this would still be ok. It would also help that I suppose the role of supervisor is more official than "friend" - I think the chances of "friends" independently finding apterous/Countdown is very very slim, and they would have to be pretty shit friends for Friend A (the first one on the scene) to not really have ever bothered talking about Countdown to Friend B, and thus indirectly encouraging and contributing B's joining the community. Whereas with vague acquaintances, people you have only met once or twice beforehand, both making independent decisions to get involve could still happen legitimately.

I think it's also relevant to why you've met up with them. I think the primary scenario that this thread exists for is that you meet someone at a CO-event, become friends with them, and then arrange to meet up with them at other times. It's a causal thing.

My dad has been to a CO-event, and every time I've met up with him since, it hasn't been because of the friendship we struck up at the CO-event. So that's why it doesn't count.

Obviously there are still grey areas. I randomly bumped into Jeff Clayton at Tesco's. We didn't arrange to meet up. But then the conversation that ensued happened because we knew each other from Countdown.

Also you might have met someone in real life but not known them very well, but then became stronger friends because of Countdown, or it might be unclear exactly what proportion of your friendship is Countdown-based.

So it is complex.

Maus and Elliott in the Arndale - think that counts cos Elliott wasn't attending the co:Man event, so the meetup was because we were there, but separate. (drank coke)

Jen, Mark, Sara, Tim and Graeme at Thorpe Park (got wet)

Jon Corby at parkrun (scanned my barcode)

Audiences don't count - does pubbing/eating in media city count? If so, can add lots.

Def need some more non-Countdown socials!

Pub/eat in media city sadly does not count if the reason you both were there was to watch countdown recording, but our Arndale thing does since you were the only person who was there for the co event and joined our unrelated meetup (I was there to meet Elliott, and went home between that and the co event) :)

You just went from the recording to have a bite to eat? I don't think I would count this as you didn't meet up, just stayed together for a bit after recording. It's the same as a post CO-event meal.

Failed Eggheads audition with... I can't quite remember who... Dinos, Ryan Taylor and maybe Richard Priest?..Maybe around 2011?

David Smith (one of Jack's prelim opponents) - fellow contestant on a pilot episode for a gameshow that never came to air.

Dan Pati, who I first met completely by chance just after he'd been on CD at a house party in Manchester. We went on to regularly pub and even played snooker once.

Have had non-CD related pub experiences circa 2012 with Jeff Clayton and Andy Platt.

Matt Bayfield queuing for Badminton at the 2012 Olympics.

Kirk Bevins round my house for curry when the darts was in Perth around 2014.

Some bloke called Jack, sibling 1992 to present.

Guess I have a fair few to add here, mostly through quizzing. Incomplete list off the dome - Fiona, Tim Down, James Wilson, Ned, Aidan Linge, Rychelle, Tom Rowell, Ian Volante, Phil Makepeace, Charlie, Phil (RIP), Supee, T-Cap.

Most recently, Ahmed Mohammed. We talked about all of you. Especially YOU.

And, um, I guess that for the sake of completeness, I should count David Barnard here.

Have met lots of former contestants at scrabble events, but restricting to ones I remember actually playing and/or having a conversation with. Reserve the right to add others as and when I remember them

James Burley
John Ashmore
John Matthews
Wayne Kelly
David Webb
Tim Hebbes (not been on telly)

MSR (not been on telly)
The more I think about it, the more I think that random people I end up playing scrabble with at a scrabble tournament shouldn't count - we've not got together because of countdown, but rather happened to come across each other at a separate nerdy word game thing. I'm gonna keep MSR and JB though because MSR and I only started attending scrabble tourneys because we knew JB through countdown.

Anyway can now add to my list - Jack H, Phil Stanton, Callum Todd and Florence and Sam C-L.

Right - reviewing my list, discounting people I've happened to be at a scrabble event with, as opposed to people I already know through countdown that I've arranged to go to the event with...

Maus and Elliott in the Arndale - drank coke

Jen, Mark, Sara, Tim and Graeme at Thorpe Park (got wet)

Jon Corby at parkrun (scanned my barcode)

Ian Volante's pub quiz (x2) (recommended if you ever find yourself in Edinburgh on a Tuesday!)

Ian V
Stevie G
Phil Hannan
Fred W
Stu H

Phil Stanton, Jack Hurst and Callum Todd - Phil's house, ate sausages

Florence and Sam C-L - visited my parkrun

James Burley and MSR - scrabble events
George Armstrong - James Burley's house (again primarily to play scrabble)
