Playing apterous at work

Post by Matt Morrison »

No sites are blocked at work, so loading the java applet is no problem.
It just can't connect to the game server once the java is loaded.
Not sure whether it's a blanket firewall ban of all java applets that try to connect over the net.

Has anyone else got to this stage and fixed it at work?
Just want to know what precisely to ask the IT team to do ("unblock this from there") without having to spend too much time describing my habit of playing word games over the Internet.

Probably a query for Charlie but thought it was quite possible somebody else has had to do this at work?

I did ages ago - I had to tell them something or Charlie told me something, or something.

HTH.

In order to be slightly more helpful, I waded back through old correspondence and found this nugget from Charlie:

"They need to allow outgoing TCP connections on ports 27438 and 27439. Outgoing connections are unlikely to pose security problems so they ought to allow it."

which, according to my response, sorted out the problem I had. You may have a different problem, of course.

Excellent, that's potentially very useful. I will wait til Charlie sees it just in case he has further input, would be ideal if I could get them to sort it in one go without having to keep bothering them, and I'm not back in til Friday. Cheers you!

Good plan - that message is over three years old, so whatever it was that I said up there might not apply anymore.

I used to work in a swimming pool and whenever I see HTH it reminds me of the company that supplied our chlorine. That is all.

Congrats on the job then! What are you supposed to be actually doing, rather than upping your ProRank?

The basic idea is right, but the port is now 3332.

Just to follow up on this, the response I received at the time was:
IT guy wrote:Neil says that our outbound traffic is going via Paris and managed by the team there. They only allow outbound traffic on known ports and he reckons there is no chance of getting them to allow that. He did say if we were managing it locally we could have looked into it.
Such an arse. Would be revolutionary at lunchtime if I could play. :(

Seemed somewhat ironic clicking "Quick Reply" to type this but here goes: At my workplace, we come away from our screens at lunch, as we'll most likely have been staring at them for about 3 hours. That is all.
