Apterous Premier League

Post by Rhys Benjamin »

This is a big one, and this is my intention to make it the biggest so far. This, Ladies and Gentleman, is the Barclays Premier League on Apterous. As such, I have timed it to run alongside the real Barclays Premier League, starting on Saturday 13 August 2011 and running to Sunday 28 May 2012, 3 weeks after it should end. I intend to either allow a break-week, or to catch up with games.

Thanks to Gavin Chipper for providing a suggestion, which is salvation!
NEW IDEA - finding your opponents twice over 41 weeks shouldn't be too hard!

So, that's that out of the way.

A special online predictor has predicted this year's (2010-2011) relegation and the Championship Promotion, so the teams available are:

Manchester United - Ian Volante
Arsenal
Chelsea - James Hall
Manchester City
Tottenham Hotspur - Dan Abrey
Liverpool - Thomas Carey
Everton - Sophie Krol
Bolton Wanderers
Fulham - James Bradley
Newcastle United - Mark James
West Bromwich Albion - Thomas Cappleman
Stoke City - Josh Hurst
Sunderland
Aston Villa - Gavin Chipper
Wigan Athletic
Blackburn - Kirk Bevins
Wolverhampton Wanderers - Joseph Krol
Queen's Park Rangers
Norwich
Swansea City

As such, there are only 20 places up for grabs, and it's FIRST COME FIRST SERVE AND RANDOMIZED TEAMS. So, sign ups shall take place until Friday 12 August. (Pre-season friendlies may be arranged  )

So, get amongst it!

STILL ONLY 8 PLACES LEFT!

Remember, don't sign up unless you're completely free between August and May.

I can tell you right now the odds of getting 20 people willing to play 38 games each is precisely zero.

Let's just clear up some stuff.

1) If you can't play in MORE THAN 3 weeks until 8 May, then you can JUST make it.

2) If you haven't played 10 matches by this date, then I'll just award the wins to your opponent.

3) So, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE get on with it!

Rhys, you've just overstepped the line between refreshingly keen and annoyingly deluded. I mean that in the nicest possible way.

Sorry, would love to take part but don't think that I'll be able to arrange so many matches, plus there's a lot of times I'm unable to play.

Erm, what? If anything (although I'm not committing to "anything") wouldn't it be better not to have games to be played at set times but just to find your 19 opponents twice over the year?

I assume that's how you're running it (games in set weeks), although you've not been very explicit.

Has Charlie hired you onto the apterous team? Trying to make the tournament more appealing whilst anyone who does up for this would have to subscribe again at some point. :?

It would be easier for the tournament to take place over three weeks, with everyone playing 2 games against their opponent at the same time as and when they see fit.

So nobody has expressed an interest in this yet? It seems fun to me, so count me in. I guess the problem would be if someone signs up who doesn't actually use apterous very much, but I imagine people who sign up will be playing regularly throughout the year and can play their matches at a reasonable rate. I guess also you may end up with some people almost finished, while others have barely started, which I suppose would take some of the drama away. For instance, if Innis (sorry to use you as an example) had played say 34 games by christmas, and won them all, there would be no motivation for everyone else to continue playing. I HATE THIS IDEA AND I HATE INNIS!

Hang on a sec, let me get this straight. The tournament starts on Saturday 13 August. We'll know the correct Premiership teams for next season after the Championship playoff final on Monday 30th May. So why assign teams now? You can still collect your entrants over the next few weeks and once you've got twenty, it'll also give you the chance to assign teams along ratings lines, if you want to. I don't understand the rush.

You've got the promoted teams wrong - Reading are clearly going to win the playoffs, so you may as well wait till that happens to assign teams

How can you decide in advance what team someone will definitely be if they decide to compete? Surely there are more than 20 potential applicants!
