All Around Standard Numbers Tournament

Post by Jordan F »

Hi,

It seems to me we haven't had a Numbers based tournament in awhile, so I figured, why not make one? The format I have in mind is what I call an "all-around" format in Standard. What I mean by this is that all of the possible numbers formats will appear at least once, and in sequence. The way it'd work is that player 1 would declare 6 small for the first round, player 2 would declare 1 large and 5 small for the second, player 3 would declare 2 large and 4 small for round 3, etc, and by the time 4 large is hit, it goes back to 6 small for the next cycle. In this case, each variant of numbers will appear an equal number of times. The format will be round robin style, with one game matches between players. The winner is the player with the highest overall win and loss record. If there's a tie, head to head will be used if possible. If not possible (in the case of multi player ties), average score throughout the matches will be used, and if there's still a tie after that, highest overall score.

For sign ups, anybody can play. The sign ups will happen from today until 11:59 PM GMT on Friday April 15th. The duration of the matches will take place tenatively over the week after that, although if it ends up being that there are a lot of entrants, I could easily extend it to two weeks.

Any questions, ask away, and sign ups are below.

When you say each variant of numbers will appear an equal number of times do you mean 6 small, 1 large 5 small etc. or variants like hyper and omelette? You can probably count me in either way but it all sounds a bit finicky.

You need to talk to Charlie about making this automated, if he can.
There is NO WAY that mistakes aren't going to be made in the picking of the right large/small balance in at least one in every two games.

Other than that, I'll play!

I'll play. But it really does need to be automated, otherwise (as Matt said) it's inevitable that the selections will go wrong.

Couple things.

*I think there's already enough people attending that I know I want to extend the period of matches to two weeks. So the matches will take place from the 16th to the 30th.
*I'm still working on talking to Charlie about making it automatic.
*What would you prefer: Just simply saying that you have to play everybody else in the tournament once by the two week period, or some sort of organization or scheduling of matches over the two weeks? I'm fine with either, but I'm wondering what would work better for everybody.

I think people will struggle to arrange and play 21 matches inside 2 weeks.

Personally I'd draw it into 4 groups and have the group winners play in a final group and possibly extend it to a third week

While all-play-all sounds like fun, I think Jamie's suggestion would be far more practical.

Yep. Obviously there would be some leeway as an early mistake can be rectified but a mistake in the last "set" can't. But I can imagine Charlie sitting reading this thinking "Fuck off - stop trying to make me do extra work."

Here's a tentative plan with the organization, it will be somewhat group based, but not entirely since I do wish for everybody to play everybody. This may change between now and the actual start of the tournament, and feel free to give feedback.

I'll divide people into 7 groups. (No way it'll be more than 10 per group, I imagine the absolute highest it would be is 5 or 6) During a 2 day period (the two weeks divided by 7), a person in one group would have to play all of the people in another group, or if you are the odd group out for that period, finish the matches within your own group. I'd be very flexible with this though, if you know that two players aren't going to be able to play a match in a certain time frame but can in another, I can switch matches or even groups, and if you know you're going to be away from the computer from some time during the two weeks, I can postpone or move up matches as needed, my main goal is ultimately to have all the matches played within the two weeks. However, in this system, if you don't speak to me about changing times or groups and a match doesn't happen, then I will deal with those situations as necessary.

In a moment, I'll start the group division. How it'll work is that I'll take the list of participants thus far, put them in a random order, and then count off by 7. If new people sign up that need to go into a group, that will be determined at random based on the number of groups that have gaps, or if all groups are even (as it'll start out as I post this), they could go into any group at random I'll also put a tentative schedule of groups playing against each other. If this group division idea ends up not working for whatever reason, I'll either try to come up with another one in time, or go with the format of simply playing all of the matches in two weeks.

EDIT: And here are the groups right now based on this randomization process.

Group 1:
Matthew Tassier
Gavin Chipper
Edward McCullagh
Martin Long

Group 2:
Jamie French
Dan Abrey
James Bradley
Matt Morrison

Group 3:
James Robinson
Jim Bentley
Martyn Simpson
Stuart Arnot

Group 4:
Mark James
Hugh Binnie
Liam Tiernan
James Wilson

Group 5:
James Hall
Rhys Benjamin
Kai Laddiman
Lee Kelly

Group 6:
Dave Mattingly
Ian Volante
Ryan Taylor
Milo Mackenzie

Group 7:
Lloyd Pettet
Michael Wallace
James Levinson
Joseph Krol

Here's a tentative schedule of matchups of groups:

Days 1-2:
Group 1 v Group 2
Group 3 v Group 4
Group 5 v Group 6
Group 7 v itself

Days 3-4:
Group 1 v Group 3
Group 2 v Group 5
Group 4 v Group 7
Group 6 v itself

Days 5-6
Group 1 v Group 4
Group 2 v Group 3
Group 6 v Group 7
Group 5 v itself

Days 7-8
Group 1 v Group 5
Group 2 v Group 6
Group 3 v Group 7
Group 4 v itself

Days 9-10
Group 1 v Group 6
Group 2 v Group 7
Group 4 v Group 5
Group 3 v itself

Days 11-12
Group 1 v Group 7
Group 3 v Group 5
Group 4 v Group 6
Group 2 v itself

Days 13-14
Group 2 v Group 4
Group 3 v Group 6
Group 5 v Group 7
Group 1 v itself

It might be quite tough to play everyone in a group over two days. If you're out one evening then you have to hope everyone''s available on the other one while you're one.
Group 1:
Matthew Tassier
Gavin Chipper
Edward McCullagh
Martin Long
I panicked when I saw that - but then read that it's not that you just play people in your own group.

I have the same concern as Gavin, I'll find it tricky to fit 3 games in every two days at certain times, as I have a job!! Perhaps a group-based knockout would be more appropriate? As in you play the 3 people in your group and the top 2 or whatever go through to the next round?

Think I'm going to go back to the free-for all to make sure people have enough time as possible. As I said, my goal is mainly to have everybody play everybody, and if that's easier in the free-for-all, then that's what I"m going to do. If that's the case, I think I might also extend the time of everything into a third week considering we already have 28 people.

Three weeks to play about thirty people is highly optimistic! I'll try, but there'll be a lot of missing matches I reckon.

In other tournaments, it's taken me a week to organise one game against one person. I don't think a round robin system or even a group stage is gonna work. Should really be just a straight knockout.

Apologies for me having not being here in awhile, although this is also related to what I'm about to say.

I'm going to have to postpone the tournament. I'm graduating from I suppose what you would call university very soon, and I figured the workload would hike up, but it hiked up much more than I expected. Sorry for the inconvience, I won't be outright cancelling this, but I'm going to wait until the summer. I'll figure out whether I'll do a new sign up thread or whether I just message everybody who signed up so far and see if they still want to. Again, my apologies for this.
