I think I'm using IE8.

Sorry to hear about the burglary Charlie. Shall we all chip in so that you can get a burglar alarm?

Oh, undoubtedly. Similarly, I'm pretty clear about the distinction between left and right shoes, but that hasn't stopped me from trying to put them on the opposite feet on occasion.

Please don't get an alarm. Ever. And anyone else who has one dismantle it. All they do is go off randomly during the night and indeed day and keep me awake.

Thanks so much for doing this Charlie! I'm excited to see what my actual percentage of the max is on the all-rounders leaderboard when it updates at midnight.

He means that in R12 The Guardian didn't use the 6 as part of the solution. I think you should change your signature to "... and that's why I don't read newspapers", Mark.

Yea, to elaborate, the Guardian's first step is 6x4=24, and then he uses the other 4 numbers to hit the target, just leaving that 24 there without actually doing it.

I assume that if the Guardian can get the solution with 4 or fewer numbers that aren't the red one, he can, in theory, just waste the red number in an operation outside the actual solution.

Can humans do this?

Well, it makes sense in a way... like I guess if you went on the show and got a round like 100 9 8 4 4 5 -> 900 you can be like "8 plus 4 is 12, minus 5 is 7, times 4 is 28. Oh then 9 times 100 is 900, you can ignore the 28." Technically you did "use" the 5, but not in the solution. If that's intended, I've been making Lockdown (especially Hyper) numbers a lot harder than I thought, as the only solutions that are no good that are good under normal rules are any rounds where your solution uses all but the red number (if I have another spare I'll just waste the red one with it) and the red number is not a 1.

Then again the Omelette rules say "you must use all 6 numbers in your solution" -- which means all numbers must actually go into a solve. It makes sense from a coding standpoint; as an extra scoring condition Omelette checks if there's only one number left in the work boxes, while Lockdown just checks if that red number isn't in its original spot anymore (if I'm grasping the rules of Lockdown numbers correctly).

You may well have in a normal numbers game when doing this is valid, but not in a Lockdown numbers game. I believe Charlie shut this loophole down for human players very shortly after it was released (though i haven't checked recently) but the Guardian and Apterouses still occasionally cheat. I personally don't think it would make any sense to allow this for humans.

I thought you originally could but then you changed it so you couldn't. I'm pretty sure I had a game where I tried to do it but wasn't allowed.

Hi,
I'm playing the Guardian in star 13 or 14 of the Scrabbler's Scramble (sorry, started a few days ago so not sure which), and twice after round 5 it stops with the error message:

Error type:
java.lang.ClassCastException:java.lang.Character cannot be cast to [Lapterous.game.RoundSummary;

Help, please! Ta muchly.

P.S. I don't know if this problem is related, but I'm playing the duel ATM, and, although it's in the goatdown format, it's choosing the final letter for me.

I doubt that I'll rejoin Facebook, and I haven't really started back on the forum either. It's just that I'm playing on apterous again, after a break of over a year, and just posting about a bug I encountered.

Sometimes it does that. It means that the Duellist is picking the final letter (rather than it being picked from the pile) and as far as I know, the Duellist picks for the best max, so it gives you a clue as to what to look out for.

Apart from the duel the other day when it was sort of alternating between which max to pick.

Not sure if this is a bug or not, but on the Format part of my user page it says that the most maxes I've achieved in a Junior 9 Rounder is 8/9 - but I've had a max game in that format. The max is still on the Variant Facts & Figures page, so it hasn't been deleted. Any ideas?

My browser started lagging so badly during R3 of today's duel that after I entered a 6 (after about 5 seconds), I wasn't able to enter any more words, even though I saw a 7 during this time and tried to type it in. An error message then made me close the window, and when I reopened it it claimed I had entered a blank in R3. I don't suppose there's any way of rectifying this (unless it can be proved that I typed in a 7 during the lag - it did seem to register this, it just wouldn't let me enter it), but it's a bit annoying that I'll lose points because of it. If it was a normal game I wouldn't be so bothered, but I haven't been doing too badly in the Duel rankings this month and I'd like to keep it that way :(

That's just the nature of the beast with the Duel, if you get disconnected or the game crashes then you just get blanked. Everyone loses a round to it occasionally.

This is a super-minor thing, but on the live pop-up notifications, there's things like "so and so commented on <em>Top 4 large players</em>..." rather than (I'm assuming) the tags resolving the "Top 4 large players" bit to a link, or whatever.

Try this applet test: http://www.java.com/en/download/testjava.jsp

If that works, try clearing your Java cache: http://www.java.com/en/download/help/plugin_cache.xml
If it doesn't, you might have a more serious problem with your Java installation. Try uninstalling and reinstalling.

I'm getting the same; when my Firefox upgraded it gave compatibility errors with Java and I'm having trouble rolling it back* (the Firefox) but I'm guessing it's a Java thing if you're having the same trouble on Chrome. I've uninstalled Java, cleared the caches and previous installations and reinstalled and still no joy.

Btw should we all call you Louise? Or is that only for close friends?

*Will have to back up a ton of shit first since my BU external hard drive's full

I've reverted today's changes, not sure what's up. I'll investigate when I get home.

That would help, because your advice is no dice for me Charlie. Sorry.

It must be amazing if you can function like this without much sleep!

Thanks Charlie. Everything's running smoothly again, but I just thought I'd mention that I also have the updated version of Firefox running on this computer, (although I don't use it for Apterous), if that's relevant.

Since I killed my own laptop with second-hand smoke, (if you're a smoker don't buy a Sony Vaio) I had to resort to using a hand-me-down. Well, in this case a hand-me-up. I just never bothered to change any of the settings.

I've just started playing a practice Spanish Goat Junior Letters Attack, and there appears to be a very minor bug when it's my pick of the letters.

After picking the penultimate letter, a dialogue box pops up:
An error was encountered. If you'd like to report the error, see: <URL>.
Error type: java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: wrong parent for card layout.
I can then click "ok", and can pick my Goatletter and continue the round, but the Patience Bar has disappeared - effectively I have no time limit to pick my Goatletter.

The leaderboard for the Eightfold Path is not available. When the page is accessed, the following message is displayed:

Apologies if this is a known bug:

I got 10 points for declaring '1' in this game. Not sure whether this also applies to other variants or scorings.

Cheers for landmarks Charlie. Looking at my sister's (Mir Tynan) one's though and it says she's still to get first letters and numbers max yet she has both in her first century game and she has a pencil.

Yea, scoring in starpath for Octorock numbers games with no way to score is weird. Like, you'll get 10 points or a point in stepdown/maxes scoring, but the Guardian doesn't. This happens most in rounds where the Guardian picks 5 small.

I'm guessing it's because the Guardian does not declare anything at all on these rounds, while in an impossible numbers game, a person declaring anything will technically be "as close as possible" with regards to scoring? Is this also the case for impossible normal numbers, as well, with these scoring formats?

Curious. Does the same thing occur in not-Spanish Goat Jnr? Or non-Jnr Spanish Goat?

Do you want me to try a Spanish Omelette?
