Apterous Winter Tournament sign-up

Post by Andrew Feist »

I am pleased to announce that entries are now being taken for the Apterous Winter Closed series of tournaments. We have:
  • The Main Event: The Winter Closed itself. This tournament will be divided into sections based on rating. Rather than have a pre-defined cutoff, I will instead split the list at "convenient" points, with the goal of having about a dozen in the top and bottom sections, and the rest in the middle section. Matches in this event will be best-of-three "Standard 15" games. The exact formats will depend on the number of entries, but you should expect to keep playing throughout the course of the event (i.e., no knockout formats).
  • Speed Demon: A tournament featuring 10-second rounds. Again, the exact tournament format will depend on the number of entries, but the basic unit will be one "Speed 15" game (as opposed to the two speed 9 games from last year). This will probably be pool-and-playoff format, but there is a chance of some knockout being added.
  • Junior Mint: A tournament featuring the Junior format. (All ages are eligible.) As above, this will probably be pool-and-playoff format, with a small chance of knockout.
How to register: You can post in this thread, or you can send me a PM/email using the links below my name here if you have questions or want to be all sneaky about it.

Dates and times: Anyone who registers by Friday, November 26 will be placed in the tournament; people who register after that date will be added only on a space-available-and-convenient basis. The tournament will start on Sunday, November 28. The basic unit of the tournament will be the "week" (i.e., you will have a week 1 match, a week 2 match, etc.) The tournament weeks will then be:

Week 1: November 28 -- December 4
Week 2: December 5 -- December 11
Week 3: December 12 -- December 18
Holiday Break
Week 4: January 2 -- January 8
Week 5: January 9 -- January 15
Week 6: January 16 -- January 22

I will (soon) have a list of participants available on the tournament web site (once the tournament web site gets created), so that you can check that your registration got noticed.

The web page for the tournament has been set up, and all the entries that I've gotten so far should be listed in the proper place. If you have already registered, please just hit the page up quickly and double-check that you are where you want to be.

I'm going to keep to one-match-a-week as far as is possible; if anything has to give, it will be the Speed Demon, since those games are single Speed 15, so doing two of those in a week shouldn't be stretching you too thin.

Currently we have 40 in the Main Event, 33 in the Speed Demon, and 30 in the Junior Mint, with three days left in the registration period, so there's plenty of room (although I have to admit 36 in the Speed Demon would be a really really really really good number).

As with the last summer tournament, I will allow half-point byes in the Junior Mint and flight A of the Main Event (it's pretty certain now that flight A will be ratings between 1000 and 1600), so if you know you will have to miss a round for whatever reason, let me know as soon as you can.

So we're at the end of standard registration, so anyone who is a last-minute kind of person had better hurry. In terms of space available:
Championship Flight (>1500 Pro ranks): no more than 1 spot open
Flight A (1000-1500 Pro ranks): must be an even number of people
Flight B (<1000 Pro ranks): as many as want to show up
Speed Demon: no more than 1 spot open
Junior Mint: no more than 31 spots open

Also, the Flight A and Junior Mint will be Swiss, so if you know you will have to miss a week let me know as soon as you can and we can work around you.
