Apterous Winter Closed Week 2

Post by Andrew Feist »

Yes, it's a day early, but you people are so splendid that I couldn't help myself. All the week 2 matches are now online. There are also standings up for everybody but the championship flight at the moment (they will be up soon). The speed demon standings are looking awfully competitive already.

A reminder for the few stragglers from Week 1: those games are still valid, so don't worry that you've lost your chance to play them.

Strange attitude: it's a hiding to nothing for Kirk.

In the speed demon:
Arnot 55 - 59 Feist
I had mentioned in my previous game that TION mustn't be much of a suffix, since we had had the letters three times, but none of the maxes used it. Fortunately, I don't listen to myself, allowing me to get AMBITION in this game to at least give myself a chance at the conundrum.

Feist 27 - 41 Arnot
And here I was just plain shut out in the second half of the game (save the numbers), to go with not being able to read in round 1, so it wasn't really as close as all that.

Championship Flight

Carson 112-78 Makepeace
Carson 108-90 Makepeace

Two good games here, there was never very much separating us throughout them both.

Speed Demon...

Charlie 50 - 45 Me http://www.apterous.org/viewgame.php?game=144460

I almost had a stormer here against an opponent i would never have expected to challenge. I saw SATIATED in rd 1 only to dismiss it and notice it again when searching for something else, when i foolishly rushed the typing and typed saitiated. This had me seriously rattled, but after holding it together for a couple of rounds i spotted TENSIONER (after also typing retension and having a little breakdown trying to decide which to declare :P ) and retook the lead having been 13 behind, only to blow it by thinking ritages was good and gaiters was made up. Anyway, after Charlie was unlucky with the last numbers, he took it on a conundrum i would never have got.

Me 27 - 68 Charlie http://www.apterous.org/viewgame.php?game=144467

Normal service resumed!

Well played Charlie!

Kirk Bevins 64 - 55 Martin May

Game 1 nearly maxed.
Game 2 was a crucial. Oh so different.

From Flight A:

Henry Meier 93 - 85 Tom Rowell
Henry Meier 79 - 70 Tom Rowell

I stole the first game from Tom who really deserved to win it, and the second game was a bit nervy, on my side at least. Well played Tom, unlucky.

The words "POINT PROVEN" spring to mind.

The only plus was me leading after round 1 in the first match!

Jon Corby 69-53 Stuart Arnot

Really unlucky for Stuart as I was slightly ahead going into crucial conundrums in both games. Very well played mate.

Speed Demon: Michael Wallace 1-1 Ian Volante

Michael Wallace 49-51 Ian Volante

A very tight game, an excellent nine won me it, and a bronze pencil.

Michael Wallace 53-29 Ian Volante

After a slow start, Michael hammered me on the numbers.

Probably a fair result!

Two close games and probably the best I've played in a while, but Nick was just too strong and won without the need for a third game.

Two results - firstly Speed Demon Pool B

James Hurrell 2 - 0 Andrew Herbertson

2 decent games but nothing standout.

Andrew Herbertson 34-58 James Hurrell
and
Andrew Herbertson 33-56 James Hurrell

Secondly Championship Flight

James Hurrell 2 - 1 Martin May

2 good tight games with Martin taking the first on the crucial conundrum and me edging the second thanks to a good start. The decider was a little disappointing with Martin pulling up before the finish line so the score more than flatters me.

Martin May 92-84 James Hurrell
Martin May 70-86 James Hurrell
Martin May 43-123 James Hurrell

I had the pleasure of playing Julie in both Flight A and the Speed Demon this week. The first three games all went to crucial conundrums before I ran away with the fourth game after spotting SQUINTIER in the second round.

Flight A

Matt Bayfield 86 - 83 Julie Taylor
Matt Bayfield 81 - 72 Julie Taylor

Speed Demon

Flight A : Matthew Tassier 2-0 Lloyd Pettet

Matthew Tassier 81 - 70 Lloyd Pettet

Matthew Tassier 83 - 73 Lloyd Pettet

Two very close games, the first decided on the final numbers and then in the second Lloyd came back from 27 down with three rounds to go, only for me to narrowly pip him to the tiebreak conundrum PIZZICATO just in time for me to go to the pub.

Dinos Sfyris 82 - Ben Wilson 73
Ben Wilson 87 - 107 Dinos Sfyris

Also I forgot to post my speed demon games with Ian Dent from earlier this week. Result was 2-0 again

Dinos Sfyris 55 - 18 Ian Dent
Dinos Sfyris 79 - 7 Ian Dent
