Apterous Summer Open Week 1

Post by Andrew Feist »

U1200: (Swiss system) (1 games left of 14)

Ross Allatt 1-2 Paul Erdunast
Simon Myers 2-1 Donald Gordon

U1000: (Pools with crossover SEE NOTE BELOW)

Ian Dent 2-0 James Leroux
Gregor Morgan 1-2 Ben Ziek
Maxine Silkstone 2-0 Steve Rogers
Adam Dexter - Supee Juachan

NOTE FOR U1000: Your crossover games are based on rating, not performance; hence an additional crossover game may need to be played in week 5. Beep repaired.

NOTE FOR U800: You will play a round-robin in two pools of four, then crossover matches based on performance (the top two from pool 1 will play the top two from pool 2, and ditto for the bottom two). That means that final rankings will not be based solely on record; the four top-two finishers will finish in the top four places and the four bottom-two finishers will finish in the bottom four places.

Just so I'm totally clear on it, what exactly is meant by crossover games? Maybe I'm being a bit dim, but I feel like I'm missing something.

Also, cheers for the effort and work you've put into this, seriously.

Crossover games are games you play against people in the other pool.

Ah, that's what I was thinking, but I couldn't figure it out because of the general mixing of people in the pools anyway. Cheers.

First results! Very very close games all three, and the third in particular is of merit for its extremely interesting max words.

O'Dowd 2-1 Meier:

http://www.apterous.org/viewgame.php?game=79052
http://www.apterous.org/viewgame.php?game=79063

ETA: Question: how will you be ranking those on the same number of points: initial ranking, points scored across all games, or spread? (If the latter two, I'm guessing you prefer this as an absolute skill ranking despite potentially some people playing one more game than others in matches)

First tiebreaker is games won/lost percentage, second tiebreaker is points/game.

Do you still play the 3rd match if someone's 2-0 up?

I dont quite know how swiss pairing works, but if its anything similar to what was used in the last aptobash im guessing you might need to play all three games in order to calculate the spread thing. (whatever that is)

Right. The goal is to get to two wins, so the results will either be 2-0 or 2-1. The points tiebreaker will be points/game, so you shouldn't fear "only" playing two games.

When the new numpties on them have no idea how to do private messages coz none of the clever buggers already in there give any instructions!

Edited: Ok, Ok, I'm a lazy numpty, just had a wade around and figured out PM's (now i know they exist)and a really handy thingy called FAQ. Thanks for the prod, clever bugger! Can I have some custard with my humble pie please?

Haha! Sorry Maxine, wasn't a prod at you at all! Was just tipsy off my gran's champagne and wanted to have a go at everyone. On a positive note, you've inspired me to develop a page in the apterous help section to cover tips for using the forum. At some point.

Look at it this way: at the cost of starting 0-1, you've guaranteed yourself not to have to play Kirk the rest of the way. ;)

Well, it does mean Andrew has to scroll through some irrelevant stuff to find results. Perhaps we should yap about it in another thread and leave this one just for results, to make it a little easier on the Feisty one.

I've edited in the results that I've got noted.

Also: I realized that I did not quite say what I meant regarding the first tiebreaker. For example, two people might be tied at 4-1 in match play; one could have a game record of 9-4, while the other a record of 8-3. For my purposes, those two players are still tied as far as game record goes (even though the first has a permillage of 0.692 and the second 0.727). A more accurate claim would be that the first tiebreaker is "games above .500" or "net games" or even "treat the record like a subtraction problem". Sorry for the confusion.

Oh pants. I'm really sorry about this, but I think I'm going to have to withdraw from the competition.

Because of an unexpected development at work (one of my job hazards is having to move at ultra short notice), this afternoon I will move to an office where I will have no access to apterous. This means I won't be around for the foreseeable future, at least until I get net access at home again (which might be a while since I currently don't own a working computer).

Apologies Andrew, for messing up your tourney... and if I'm not around for a while, then thank you to the apto-people I've played over the month or two I've been here. It might take a while, but I'll be back as soon as I get the opportunity.

Best wishes all.

Kirk, has it always been blocked just because it's a java game, or has it specifically been outlawed since your Countdown fame, so as not to distract any kids who want to follow in your footsteps?

You would have thought that Mr. IT would happily unblock it for you on a specific case basis to play in your lunchbreak. Unless the other staff don't trust you.
