Card Hunt!

Post by Charlie Reams »

After the success of the Easter Egg Hunt, we decided to celebrate the thrilling end of Series 60 with a big hunt (and I don't mean Jon Corby). Designed by Ben Wilson, and it really is very nicely designed, the card hunt starts now, and there are 13 cards to find. There will of course be a prize for the first person to find them all.

You can monitor the unfolding events on The Card Board.

No more hints for now. Go hunt!

I know you might not answer this, but is it possible to get the same card twice like ti was with easter eggs?

I'm sure it's on some level ironic that I continually mix up malapropisms with spoonerisms.

Interesting to see no one's cracked the 2, 9 or Ace yet. If a clue is needed, let's just say the value of each card has some significance...

At time of writing, I appear to be the only person to have been awarded an 8 of diamonds. Unfortunately I didn't write down the relevant word or game, so I have no idea what I got it for.

I've worked out what the Queen is for, and I think I know what the 6 is for.

The others I haven't worked out yet.

I haven't worked out what any of them are for, as I appear to be pretty much the only person with no cards. I think it's some kind of massive conspiracy against me.

I reckon an ace would have to be for a max game - it would make sense. I'm not expecting to be first to get one ;)

It's not just any game - I just maxed a junior 9-rounder (the only thing I'll ever have any hope of maxing!) and didn't get anything.
Maybe it's 15 rds +?
Or perhaps standard only?

Edit: Sudden thought: Surely a max game makes the whole thing inaccessible to 98% of players - I'm guessing Charlie wouldn't do that?

I reckon that they all are for playing certain words- for example I got a queen of diamonds for getting one which Kirk missed in one of his finals games, if that helps (not sure if I am allowed to say the word so I haven't)

I'm pretty sure the queen of diamonds is way way way way way sillier than that. (I've got a big pile of queens of diamonds and I doubt that Kirk missed that many.)

Not all of them are word based -- my three of diamonds was for "overall" rather than for any round. (The only interesting thing I can see about that "overall" was that I lost by 25 points.)

Some cards come after the round you just played, yet others are awarded at the end of the game.

Have just beat Chris Davies in a 15-rounder, scoring 128 pts and 15 maxes, my first ever max game, yet i was awarded with NO CARDS whatsoever, so back to the drawing board for those who are chasing an Ace or think it is something to do with a large score.

My guess, is an ACE comes for a 12-letter word in Hyper, which are about as common as finding dinosaur faeces stuck to the bottom of the QE2.

The 4 and the Jack are both whole game things too.

I got a perfect junior and no ace, and no 7 for a junior 7 either. The ace has to be for something cool though, I have two theories, one is perfecting a duel, and the other I'm not going to share just yet 8-)

Counting 3 rounds as in "1, 2, 7, 4, 5, 6, 3" ?

I had been trying to double-check with my opponents ("did you just get a 3 of diamonds?") and had discarded all my theories about them.

Just realized today that free/trial/whatever they're called next week players don't get cards.

Somehow, I picked up nine 6s in one game yesterday. No idea how, though. Couldn't see how the nine rounds in which I got 6s differed from those in which I didn't get a 6. The J and the Qs are a mystery too.

Was it a Junior Numbers Attack, Howard? I thought I knew what a 6 meant (solving a 6 small game), but I'm pretty sure that's not right now. But it could be for using a 6 in solving a numbers game, or something.

I'm pretty sure 6 small is right. (Although in light of Junior, perhaps we should call it "0 large".)

State of play 10 days in: both Aaron Higgs and Damian Eadie need a 9 and a king, Susan Mrton needs both of these and a 5, Kirk needs 7, 9 and King, and Paul Howe needs 2, 3 and 8 (just to be different).

And of course no one yet has an Ace.

Ladies and gentleman, the winner of the card hunt, the ace in the pack, the shark of the cards, is none other than Mr. AARON HIGGS. Enjoy that ace, man. :)

All is revealed-

2 of diamonds- score with a 2-letter word.
3 of diamonds- Solve all 3 numbers games in a standard 15.
4 of diamonds- Play 4 consecutive games against the same opponent.
5 of diamonds- crack a goatundrum in under 5 seconds.
6 of diamonds- crack a 6-small numbers game.
7 of diamonds- score 77 points in a standard 15.
8 of diamonds- in unlimited, get an 8 letter word that has only 3 different letters in it (e.g. ASSESSES)
9 of diamonds- get a 9-letter word in blind.
10 of diamonds- get a 10 letter word in hyper.
Jack of diamonds- win a game with Captain Jack Sparrow in dictionary corner.
Queen of diamonds- max a letters round with a word that has two Rs in it (for Rachel Riley, of course! :))
King of Diamonds- max a letters round with a word that is also the nickname of a football club (for Jeff Stelling)

and the Ace...

...having acquired all 12 of those cards, reply to my provate message explaining how you acquired all those cards.

There are three more suits in the deck, and I already have a few ideas completely different from those implemented above- I'll wait to see how tarred and feathered I get following this hunt though.

Just realised I've not yet mentioned that Card Hunt was totally excellent, King of Diamonds especially so. I remember Jason Larsen got a King very early on, so I looked at his games (always an interesting experience) but couldn't figure out how he'd done it. Seems it was for this (Forfar Athletic), which is great, as I'd assumed after seeing Ben's answer that there'd only have been a few that scored - obvious stuff like CANARIES, MAGPIES, HATTERS etc. I wonder now how far that one went?

The next suit would be clubs, then?
