Endurance Event

Post by Charlie Reams »

This month, the monthly scores for the Duel will finish on the 27th and the monthly top spots will be awarded.

On the 28th, there will be a new Duel. In fact, rather a lot of new Duels, because there will be a new one every hour for 24 hours. Each Duel will remain open for just that one hour. The top player at midnight will be crowned winner of the first apterous endurance event. Anyone who somehow manages to complete all 24 of them will get a special reward of a secret nature.

You have been warned.

Weird and wonderful idea! :)
Unfortunately it's Alex's 24th birthday, so I probably won't be able to do many. :(

Awesomeness. I don't think I'll be able to do all 24 (I have to go out and like, do stuff most Saturdays) but if I'm not doing anything on the evening, I reckon I'll be able to manage 21 or 22. Anyone who does all 24 deserves a Jack Bauer on a stick, and a pat on the bum.

Great idea Charlie - I play golf on Saturdays (or try to) but will do as much as I can.

However, I'm sure that a few of the diehards will see it through to the bitter end.

Good luck guys.

If you cut a gandiseeg in half, do you get two gandiseegs or two halves of a gandiseeg?

I am looking for a few volunteers to look after the server for some periods of time on Saturday so I can do stuff like eating. It doesn't require any technical knowledge (beyond typing the word "shutdown" if the server breaks), you just need to be available and online for an hour or so. Please let me know by Private Message if you're interested.

I'm a technospaz but if you say its that simple I'll have a go for you Charlie, so that you may eat. After all you give so much and ask so little. Just let me know when you want me and how long for etc.

Also I reckon a 24 theme to Duel day would be excellent, with psycho bitch Nina in DC. I'm gonna watch a whole series back to back in between duels if I can :)

After 4 rounds, Jimmy Gough is our leader with 63 points. Nine people are still in the running for a perfect record. Embarrassingly, I'm not one of them, because I didn't get back from the pub in time for Round 1.

Although having a good night's sleep might actually be the best strategy. I've been drained all night and not scored many points, with there not being many participants in the graveyard shift duels. Anyway back to bed for an hour and a half!

Aye, there's probably going to be more points up for grabs in just one of this evening's Duels than there have been in the last five or six put together! Still, it's the taking part and being a mentalist that counts.

As did Charlie's post immediately(ish) above mine. A slight alteration to the database to ensure his early game that finished slightly late counts, methinks.

Hang on, is it the case that you only got the multi-duels if you're a generous type? I gave up at about 20 to 2 when the second duel hadn't arrived.

Things are really hotting up at the top after 16 rounds:

1 Gary Male 196/16
2 Jim Bentley 192/16
3 Jimmy Gough 190/16
3 Dinos Sfyris 190/16

Let the madness continue!

Whilst I condone the principle of 1-vowel rounds that was behind the 6pm-7pm duel. I thought it was a bit lame having conundrums as well, since it (effectively) makes it a conundrum attack with a bunch of letter rounds as a tie-breaker.

Oh, bugger, can't believe I fell asleep before the last one! I seemed quite alert at 10.45, never suspected that would happen....ah well, it's been real. Cheers Charlie, and well done to Dinos, Gary and Jimmy, you crazy fools.

Edit: Just seen that the final Duel was a Conundrum Attack, so don't feel quite so bad about missing it now, as it would've made precious little difference to my score

Seeing as I had no intention of playing the endurance event, I think I did quite well.

Sleaford decided to have a townwide power cut about 12 rounds into the final duel which pissed me off no end. Thank you Charlie for allowing the reset of the duel for me, and thank you to the national grid for not having another power cut until about 15 seconds after I completed the duel.

Congrats Dinos, and well done Jimmy. Unlucky Jim, to get so close and then, well, really unlucky.

It was fantastic fun, although I had to miss quite a few for sleep and also Alex's birthday meal out.
Sod's Law that one of the missed ones was a numbers attack, as I'm quite good at those. C'est la vie.

Congratulations to the four who did all (or almost all) 24, and especially Dinos for winning. 8-)

Brilliant idea, Charlie, and pleased that you're now calling it Endurance Event #1! Looking forward to the next one. :)

Having fully recovered my sleep, and come back from my nice day out in Bakewell with Emma, I'd like to say thanks to Charlie for organising the event, and well done to everyone who took part. Can't believe I won. I can assure you ability had little to do with it! Its all about being a mentalist really, which I passed with flying colours! Can't wait to find out my mystery priiiiiiize...

Obviously; they give you them on the town boundary, and you must show them to anyone that asks. Similar practices are found in Kendal and Pontefract I believe.

Maybe we should have a score-as-many-points-as-you-can-in-24-hours contest. As many games as you like, about like those 24 hour Scrabble sessions. I don't know how hard this is from a programming viewpoint.

Massive big-up respect (or something) to Dinos, and Jimmy, Gary and Jim for pushing him close. If I'd know how my Sat would've panned out I'd have gone for all 24 myself, but as I made a total hash of the last few duels (kudos to Ben and Kai for slipping past me) I doubt I'd have managed more than fifth.

I'll stick to 10pm-10am ten-pin bowling marathons, and running London marathons, for my future endurance challenges. Until the next Apterous endurance event. :)
