Game of the Year (GotY) 2013 - voting

Hello apteforumpeoples!

Nominations for GotY 2013 have now closed. A big thank you to everyone who sent me their nominations. In total, there were 143 nominations comprising 75 different games, which exceeds the total from last year - hooray!

Now we move on to the voting phase. Whereas nominating was time-consuming, what with looking back over a year's worth of games on apterous, voting is quick and simple. There were 11 games with ≥n nominations and a further 7 with (n-1) nominations. The 11 games comprise the final poll, and the 7 games that missed out by a single nomination are given an honourable mention below. Even if you're not inclined to vote, please do have a look through these 18 games as they make up some of the highlights from apterous in 2013, as chosen by apterites. Enjoy!

Voting rules:

Each person should submit one of 12 options for each game when voting: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 or Abstain (0 is worst and 10 is best). You can submit the same vote for as many games as you like. The games will be ranked by the average score received from the 0-10 votes (abstentions excluded), with the highest average score declared as the winner. You should submit a vote for every game, and abstentions are only permitted for games you were involved in (but you don't have to abstain in any case).

Feel free to openly discuss the nominees (or, indeed, the games that didn't make it to the final poll) in this thread if it takes your fancy. Also let me know if you have any questions or early ideas for improvement for the next GotY poll.

For me, there are a few striking things about this year's nominees.
  • - The final 11 are shared between 8 different human players and no human player has more than 2 games in the poll.
    - None of the top 18 games from nominations were human vs human.
    - Two of the final 11 didn't make the top 3 in GotW voting (both of Bob's games) - this is the first time such games have made it all the way to the final poll.

Disappointing indeed that there are no human v human games - feels like voting for treadmill runs over races!

I'm with Ian on this one. Disappointed to see not a single player v player game. This looks like a Practice Performance of the Year vote rather than Game of the Year vote.
Which is better, a round of 62 when practicing golf or a 68 to win a tournament?

People take into account whatever they think the relevant features of a GOTY game are when nominating and voting. Maybe the 68 in a tournament is arguably better than a 62 in practice, but also maybe there have only been 69s in player v player games.

(So they'd have done better by concentrating on the game.)

Thanks to all those who voted, and once again to those who nominated. Thanks also to Charlie for a couple of weeks of publicity on the apterous home page, which helped to draw in some more voters. I can now reveal the top three games of apterous from 2013!
Congratulations to Matthew for scooping the top award with a huge average voting score and an emphatic winning margin, to Conor for finishing as runner-up and to Innis on his third place. The points breakdown for all 11 nominees is shown below.

Very impressive average score there, wasn't expecting there to be quite so decisive a result. Congrats Matthew!

Nice to see the results of this. I voted Conor's Mocktorun top, but I suppose it would have been boring for something so similar to last year's winning game on top again. But I am surprised by the margin of victory with Matthew's game. It was a very good game, but I'm going to stick my neck out and say that I think it's slightly overrated. Bullet hyper has been maxed a handful of times anyway, so for this to be GOTY worthy it would have to be a significant step up from that. Lock adds little to the difficulty, so it's all about whether having 10 of the 20 rounds at 4-large moves it from being a decent GOTW contender in a given week to a dominant GOTY winner. I'm not convinced.

That's not to say I don't think it's a great game. It is, and worthy of its place in this poll. But to win by nearly 2 points is a lot.

Thanks Adam and Innis and everyone who voted, it's an honour to have my game voted top of the poll and the winning margin is indeed really rather surprising. Also, apologies to Gev, I shall try to do better this year.

On the subject of human v human games, I was quite surprised that none made the final poll. 8 of the 22 games I nominated were human v human, none of which would have been out of place in the final list. I'll stick links to them on here if anyone would like and I'd encourage anyone who feels the range of games in the final poll weren't to their liking to participate in the nomination process next time.

Lastly, big thanks to Adam for the effort he puts in to organise this.
