COLIN X- Countdown in Lincoln, 25th-26th January 2014

Post by Ben Wilson »

Good morning c4c, apterous and other associated awesome websites

It's nowhere near the end of January, which can only mean one thing- the time has come to announce that COLIN- or Countdown in Lincoln for long- is open for business! Over the last nine years, COLIN has gone from humble beginnings in a dingy student union hall to being slightly less humble in a local church hall. This can mean only one thing- next year's COLIN, to be held on Saturday 25th January, will be the tenth.

And as it's the tenth, I thought to myself 'hey Neb, how can you improve on a format that's tried, true and has the popular vote on its side?' Well… You can't, really. As with the last two years, at COLIN, everybody will host three and play six nine-round games of Countdown (Edinburgh-style with three to a table, two people playing and one hosting), and the top two players will then play a final nine-round game to determine the overall champion.

There'll be prizes for the top six including trophies and free entry into COLIN 2015 (or COLIN XI if I stick with Roman Numerals) for the top three, two 'overachiever' prizes, various spot prizes, the usual. I've already begun gathering together prizes for the tourney and I've got some good, hard-to-find (but still a bit crap) stuff including books and board games, and I'll also add a few foody prizes closer to the time. I'm assuming people don't want to eat food that's been at the back of my cupboard for seven months, but you never know.

Entry into COLIN will be, as always, just £10. This gets you the six games, the COLIN goody bag (including the 2014 edition of the fabled COLIN puzzle magazine) and the chance to mingle with and compete against all your favourite apteforumites at the event and at the now-legendary afterparty.

As I said earlier, I've tried to think of ways to improve COLIN and, well, couldn't find any. However, this is the tenth COLIN and I have to do something special to mark it, so if I can't find a way to improve COLIN, what I can do is give the people more of it, so for the very first time there will be a second event, held the day after COLIN (Sunday 26th January) that I am dubbing the 'COLIN hangover' for reasons that will no doubt prove obvious on the day itself.

The hangover will be a shorter tournament than the main event- just 4 games and a final instead of 6 and a final- and game 1 will kick off at 10:45 with the event all done by 3pm to allow people to catch their trains home. There'll only be prizes for 1st, 2nd and the overachiever at the hangover, but entry to it will be a mere £7, or you can enter both events for the discounted price of £15. Those who won free entry to COLIN 2014 will also get free entry into the hangover.

If the Sunday event proves popular, it's a simple matter to make it a feature of all future COLINs.

The main COLIN tournament will take place at the Memorial Hall on Newark Road North Hykeham- its home since 2011- but I can't get the venue on Sundays so the hangover will take place at the Village Hall on Boundary Lane in South Hykeham.

To enter, simply send your Paypal payment to hulla.mahulla@btopenworld.com or pm/aptomail me for my home address to send cheques to.

See you all in January!

If it's not on Jon's list, I think conundrums could be improved. The ones used at Cobliv for example were printed in colour on card which made them easier to reveal and easier to read.

I should be in if i'm still around in 6 months...

Do the conundrums have difficulty ratings on at COLIN? I know they have done at some CO events. They shouldn't. Also some people fold them over to hide them and some don't, leading to inconsistencies. Best they're just not on there.

Well the 2014 provisional PDC calendar is out and looks like I'm free for these dates. Given that I assume I get free entry to COLIN 2014, I'll take the free entry to the hangover too. Is there a casino in Lincoln so it can be proper Hangover style?

Afternoon all

Entries are slowly trickling in for next year's event, so now seems as good a time as any to reveal some of the spot prizes that'll be on offer throughout the day (that I, um, forgot to put in the first post).

First off, some of the old classics will return. Tuff luck will return for the third consecutive year, which as always will be given to the player on three or more losses with the lowest combined total losing margin for their 3 narrowest losses (it makes perfect sense, honestly).

Highest losing score will also put in a return. I think 77 is still the COLIN (and possibly co-event in general) record for a losing score in a 9-rounder, there should be plenty of opportunity to top that this year.

The 'conundrum god' badges will be on offer for the third year running- this is for anyone who solves 5 or 6 conundrums during the heat rounds (not counting tie-break conundrums). Joining them for this year will be badges for anyone scoring 360 points or more during the heats, and for anyone getting a verified max game during the day.

There will also be two special 'draws' that every player will be entered to. The first one, a spot prize, will be the player whose total points scored on the day will be closest to a randomly-drawn target between 250 and 350.

The final draw will be possibly the biggest prize ever given out at COLIN (at least in terms of monetary value- not that that's hard, mind you). Upon arrival at COLIN every player will be given a number of raffle tickets equal to the amount of times they've played at COLIN. So if COLIN X is your first time, you get one ticket, whilst if you're Kirk Bevins and you've played at every COLIN, you get ten. The winner of the draw will win free entry into the next ten COLINs (and their hangovers, if applicable). Assuming I'm still organising these events in 2024, of course!

If you haven't seen them yet, I've posted links to 2014's trophies on facebook- https://fbcdn-sphotos-b-a.akamaihd.net/ ... 7712_n.jpg . And of course, everyone will go away with the now-traditional goody bag.

I've just paid for both days.

What's the Corby line on Travelodge deals this year? It's looks to me as though Friday is £22.99 and Saturday £42 at the moment. The Friday looks reasonable (I paid £24 for each last time).

Edit - I've now booked for the Friday at £22.99, but I'm leaving Saturday for now.

Yeah, I've been checking these too. The Friday does look okay, but I'm hanging in there for the moment. Got both nights for £12 each one year 8-)

BTW, I'm signed up for the hangover so I'm expecting if we do the group train ticket again that we might go for a slightly later train home if we need to...?

The timings of the hangover have us all done by about 2:45 and the walk from the venue to Hykeham station is roughly twice that from the main COLIN venue to the station, if that's any help. :)

Thanks! Sorry to be a pain again, but do you have any links to the venues on Google Maps? Because I've tried searching and can't find it. Also, google reckons the venue is 5 hours walk from the train station, which could be problematic :(

No pain at all. :) Directions depend on whether you want to get off at Hykeham station or Lincoln. If it's Hykeham, it's a very short walk- click here for map whereas if it's Lincoln, you'll want a taxi or a bus- click here for map. The hangover venue is a little bit further out- here's a link from the main event venue to the hangover venue- click here.

Hope you can make it in January! :)

The addition of Rychelle has taken COLIN X to double digits and the hangover up to nine entrants. :) The Sunday event is certainly proving more popular than I had anticipated- I was only expecting around 16 people maximum to attend that so that's what I've budgeted for time and prize-wise, but as always, the more the merrier!

It's at about this time of year I also issue my annual plea for people to bring along copies of the board game and copies of the ODE3 (as the show is sticking with it for now, so will COLIN). My eight copies of the board game will be present and correct as always, but more will undoubtedly be needed on the day.

Also, if anyone is willing to come along and act as a reserve player that would be fantastic- I'll be too busy recording scores/keeping track of the spot prizes to also play, and no one wants to end up playing Apterous Prune.

Oh, and has a fancy dress theme been decided on yet? :)

Same price as Gevin got - £23 for the Friday and £42 for the Saturday. Would have held off booking the Saturday like Gevin if I knew for definite that there would be a sale on, but I just wanted to get it all booked together with doing the train tickets too. The Travelodge has been fully refurbished too btw so we're all in for a treat.

Jesus that is exciting. We all know I am the biggest proponent of the "wait and see" method for the sale, but sadly family duties takes much of the freedom and fun away and yeah we'll probably book at those prices too. Still good value overall, having just paid for a two night stay in Winchester where each night is considerably more expensive than both Lincoln nights put together :S

Guys you can get 4.2% cashback from any Travelodge booking via Topcashback. That's £2.73 back from Ryan's (typical) £65 booking, so worth a little effort.

If you're not already a member I'd be grateful if you signed up via this link then I get a tell-a-friend bonus: http://www.topcashback.co.uk/ref/lenoz
Absolutely loving cashback sites at the moment, I must admit.

I'll buy you a drink instead if you sign up from my link. Even in Hykeham that's probably worth more than £2.73!

Yeah I get a fiver I think, once the signee has got some of their own cashback confirmed. So anyone who signs up through my link is officially welcome to £2.50.

But really, was just letting people know. I'm well into these cashback sites now, they are ridiculously good as they cover all the places you would shop online anyway.

Perhaps someone should have warned Callum about Zarte's Lincoln antics...

Who's getting the train from London on Friday? And what train are you getting? The 15:08 from King's Cross is ideal for me (read: cheap).

I'll be getting the train from London on Friday. But I can't get there as early as 15.08, cos of work :( I'd probably better count myself out of group travel plans this year, unless others want to set off later.

I'm fairly easy about travel times on the Friday, although I don't want to get there insanely late or anything, and obviously the cheaper the better. I seem to remember that Corby did an excellent job of organising us last year. :D

Booked Travelodge yesterday, didn't want to take any further waiting risks and took the 2 nights at £65, minus the best part of £3 cashback of course! :D

We'll probably be waiting for you all. Maybe even off the train if we are bored, and depending on times.

Yeah, I'm happy to sort the train again, so if anyone else wants in, PM me. Well, you'll have a little while, the discounted tickets don't go on sale until about 3/4 weeks in advance as I recall.

Edit: Scrub that, fuck you all, it all seems to have changed since last year. Sort your own fucking trains out.
