CobliviLon Results

CobliviLon Results

All games were 9-rounders except the final which was 15 rounds. The top eight players after six games played in a knockout format. The final was between Edward McCullagh and Innis Carson. They remained level until the conundrum at 113-113, which Innis solved to become CobliviLon champion.

The winner of the overachiever prize, finishing 12 places above their seeding, was Tom Rowell.

Highest scorer across the six heat matches was Innis with 422.

The highest 9-round score of the day was Adam Gillard's 95-77 win over James Robinson. James's score was also the highest losing score of the day.

Home now. Thanks for putting this event together, Amie. Also thanks to Charlie for letting me hack about with his tournament fixture generation program, which was an integral part of the computer system with all its statistics and things that everyone seemed to like.

This was the first ever overnight co-event; Adam's score of 95 must surely be the highest ever 9-round score at a tournament; and Innis and Ed, even at 6am, gave us top class play in the final.

Innis maxed both his quarter and semi finals despite it being stupid o'clock on very little sleep. Boy can play.

Here's the recap for the final of CobliviLon 2012, which concluded at about 7am.

C1: Edward McCullagh (6/8 wins, 467 points) qualified for the quarter-finals with four wins and 367 points. He beat Adam Gillard and Thomas Cappleman to get to the final.
C2: Innis Carson (8/8 wins, 562 points) was the only player on six wins out of six after the main rounds. He beat Chris Hare in his quarter final, and Ryan Taylor in his semi-final, which was a double max game.
DC: Mark Deeks and Graeme Cole.

A sign of things to come with these conundrums..............

A very good start to the competition by David there. I knew what I would be up against, but more on that later, as I had a duel with Phyl first.

Re: CobliviLon Results

Post by Jennifer Steadman »

If you've read Mark's quite excellent Champions' Special recap, you may know that there was a concerted attempt by the other attendees to matchmake myself and Adam Gillard. This worked so well that we became betrothed in the Walkabout pub after the filming session was over, despite some Irish guy's best attempts to seduce Mr Gillard. (You're all invited to the wedding, by the way. Except him.)

There is, however, a thin line between love and war. Perhaps knowing this, Amie ended up drawing us on the same table at CoBliviLon/CoSexyLon/the nerd orgy along with Ned Pendleton, who seemed heartwarmed by our budding romance. Unfortunately, DCing each other's games couldn't last forever, and we were forced to compete against each other. Having adorned my notepad with a 'Mrs Adam Gillard ♥' header and hearts embellished with 'Jen 4 Adam' slogans, the games began. I decided to keep a running commentary of my feelings during the game on said notepad. Why? I don't really know, but love makes you do funny things.

Here's the recap, complete with running commentary.

Table 3, Game 2 recap

Round 1: L Z M O A I N R E

C1: NORMALIZE (18)
C2: NORMALIZE (18)
Score: 18–18 (max 18)

Commentary: "ADAM HAD THE SAME - WE ARE SO IN SYNC!! ♥"

Adam shows me his solid 9, and is somewhat surprised when I show him my solid 9 in response. I like to think we'll work through it, though.

Round 2: G E K A R B A E L

C1: BREAKAGE (8)
C2: BREAKAGE (8)
Score: 26–26 (max 26)

Commentary: "♥ ADAM HAD THE SAME AGAIN! We are perfect for each other"

Our scores are also perfect thus far. So is Adam.

Round 3: Q C S U U E T I R

C1: QUIETUS (7)
C2: CUTIES (6)
OT: CIRQUES, CRUSTIE, ICTERUS, QUERIST (7)
Score: 33–26 (max 33)

Commentary: "Adam beat me, but 50 Shades of Grey says a bit of beating now and then is sexy ♥"

This is a really good spot by my soon-to-be hubby. It's the name of a music website, but also means the end of something. Fortunately, it's not the end of our romance.
I'd define the other 4 maxes, but unfortunately none of them are actually words.

Round 4: 6, 3, 4, 10, 9, 5. Target: 654.

C1: 653. ((9 + 4) x 5 x 10) + 3 (7)
C2: 653. ((9 + 4) x 5 x 10) + 3 (7)
OT: 654. (10 x 5 x 4 x 3) + (6 x 9) (10)
Score: 40–33 (max 43)

Commentary: "SAME AGAIN! We are so in sync it is amazing"

This solution is actually quite doable. A bit like Adam really.

Round 5: W E X A Y E F S B

C1: BEESWAX (7)
C2: WAXES (5)
Score: 47–33 (max 50)

Commentary: "Adam did so well on this round that I cannot hate him for it."

A fabulous darrenic 7 puts Adam 14 points clear. SEX is in the selection. I like to think it's a hint, but Adam doesn't pick up on it.

Round 6: D C R E A O S A A

C1: ROSACEA (7)
C2: ARCADES (7)
Score: 54–40 (max 57)

Commentary: "We drew but did not have the same word, yet our connection remains strong"

Somewhat surprisingly, these are the only 2 7s available. ROSACEA sounds quite pretty, but is a horrible skin condition. Speaking of pretty things, Adam.

Round 7: M I S A T A T W D

C1: ADMITS (6)
C2: STADIA (6)
OT: TATAMIS (7)
Score: 60–46 (max 64)

Commentary: "FUCK!"

No, this isn't an order to Adam. It's my response to me chickening the darrenic TATAMIS. Further, unprintable, responses are uttered as Ned confirms its validity.
A TATAMI, apart from being not a word, is a type of Japanese mat.

Round 8: 100, 10, 1, 9, 2, 5 Target: 779.

C1: 779. ((100 + 10) x (5 + 2)) + 9 (10)
C2: 779. ((100 - 2) x (9 - 1)) - 5 (10)
Score: 70–56 (max 74)

Adam's guaranteed the win. TATAMIS would've taken it to a crucial. Arse.
I am too busy having a strop to write about my love for Adam here, but know that it was strong anyway.

Round 9: [can't remember the actual scramble] I D E A B E F I T

C1 buzzes on [some] seconds to say BEATIFIED which is correct.
Final Score: 80–56 (max 84)

Commentary: "Adam beats me on the conundrum but he looks so sexy when he declares BEATIFIED that I do not mind and instead my heart burns with love."

My fiancé's not bad at this, is he? He ends up second-placed in the overall standings by the end of the day, so the thought that it could've gone to a crucial is pretty heartening - especially when he's spotting words like BEESWAX and QUIETUS. Well played, Adam.

The wedding's off if he ever buys me tatamis, though.

(Sorry about this whole recap, Adam.)

Well, I was never going to get that, so no complaints on that one.

But, a very well done to Adam for maxing one of the most memorable games in CO-event history, which unless I'm not mistaken has broken/equalled 3 records.

95 being the highest winning score, 172 being the highest combined score and 77 being the joint-highest losing score, I think equal with that other legendary match between Jon Corby & Jack Hurst at COLIN 2011. :ugeek:

No time for wallowing though, as I had a match with Ben Wilson to win.

DC: SOURISH (7)
OT: SHAURIS (7) SIRRAHS (7) SURAHIS (7)
Score: 49–47 (max 66)

Cracking point is reached in Ben's case, as I managed to close the gap down to 2 points with 2 rounds to go, even though I chicken on SOURISH. :(

Round 8: 50, 10, 8, 9, 3, 8. Target: 375.

C1: 375. (50 x 8) - (3 x 9) + 10 - 8 (10)

Round 9: U N S E E N M I X

C2 buzzes on 6 seconds to say SEXENNIUM which is correct.
Final Score: 59–67 (max 86)

If you were there at CoBliv, you might recall me shouting out in delight at one stage. This was the reason, and how appropriate that I got SEXENNIUM on 6 seconds. :P

So, I managed to get 4 wins out of 6 from my endeavours, and amazingly, 391 points, with my 2 highest scores being my losing scores!!!! :? :? :?

Yeah, I know, I thought I was weird enough already. :geek: :ugeek:

So, a quarter-final against Thomas Cappleman was just around the corner. More on that later. ;) :) :D

Round 9: H I T P A L A C E

C1 buzzes on 1.5 seconds to say CHIPELATA which is incorrect.
C2 does not buzz.
The answer was CALIPHATE.
Final Score: 49–44 (max 67)

Well, after Thomas goes in with CHIPELATA, I thought it was game, set and match, so when Ben said "No", I was trying to think what the anagram word that looked like CHIPELATA was, I couldn't think for the life of me what it was. So, a sad way to go out, but I couldn't find the opening I needed to get back, so my own fault really. :(

So, next up for me was hosting duties in Thomas' semi-final, against Edward McCullagh.

C1: 411. Mistake in working.
C2: 411. ((75 + 7) x (3 + 2)) + (9 / 9) (7)
JR: 412. ((75 - 9) x 3 x 2) + 9 + 7 (10)
Score: 46–43 (max 63)

Oh dear, both contestants declare an unwritten 411, but Eddie's mind goes completely blank as he tries to remember, so the gap shrinks to 3, meaning that it's yet another crucial conundrum. :P

Round 9: T A L C U M S K I

C1 buzzes on 3.75 seconds to say MULTISACK which is incorrect.
C2 does not buzz.
The answer was MAULSTICK.
Final Score: 46–43 (max 73)

With a capacity crowd watching, Eddie goes in for the kill, and misses, but fortunately for him, Thomas can't spot it either, so Eddie survives............just.

Although, he did have to play Innis in the final, so maybe Thomas threw it, just so Eddie would have to play him.

Any which way, that's my recaps done. :D

Hope you enjoyed them all, and till next time, bye bye. :D :D

Bit of a shame I was off form for 5 of the 6 games, although I doubt I'd have beaten James even if I was on form, oh well, onto the next tourney I turn up at. I had a great time and apologies to anyone if I seemed abit awkward talking to you on a one on one conversation, I can find it difficult to make conversation around new people but I should be different next time, see you all at the next meet :D

That's good to hear :) I thought I seemed like I didn't quite come out of my shell on that meet, or maybe it was because I was really tired. Although it was pretty cool to just sit in trafalgar square and sit in the cafe and have a natter, even if we were all half asleep lol
