Countdown in Edinburgh - November 3rd

Post by Mike Brown »

Hi all

This is an announcement for a Countdown event to be held in Edinburgh (CoEdi) on Saturday November 3rd.

Jointly organised by Nita Marr and friends from the legendary Edinburgh Countdown Club and Rich Priest and myself from the C4C community, it will be a Lincoln (sorry, Edinburgh!)-style tournament run roughly along the same lines as COLIN at the home of the ECC in the south of the city (to be more exact, the Braid Bowling Club, 58 Cluny Gardens, Edinburgh EH10 6BR).

With a bit of luck, it should attract plenty of members from the club and quite a few travellers from south of the border, so it should prove to be a memorable occasion (fingers crossed!).

More details will follow, but hopefully some of you will find a space for it in your diaries now!

Mike.

CONFIRMED:

Michelle Nevitt
Ryan Taylor
James Robinson
Graeme Cole
Innis Carson
Jon O'Neill
Ben Wilson
Mark Deeks
Ian Volante
Andy Platt
Paul James
Jack Worsley
Paul Worsley

(There are also 18 bookings from the Club!)

This makes a fantastic total of 33 players as Rich and I are also fixing things so we can hopefully play along as well (although if we meet in the final - highly unlikely I think! - someone else will have to set the conundrum!)

PROVISIONAL TIMETABLE:

10.00 Doors open
11.45 Welcome / Round 1 Draw announced.
12.00 Round 1
13.20 Lunch
14.05 Round 2
15.25 Break
15.40 Round 3
17.00 Break
17.20 Grand Final
17.45 Prizegiving
18.00 End / down the pub!

Sweet, I've always wanted to (knowingly) go to Scotland.

Brilliant. ;) :) :D

P.S. I hope you can return the favour and come to COHUD. 8-)

I take it you went to Scotland when you were still a wee nipper, James?

Will probably come to COHUD, but hesitating to book, as it's my birthday weekend. (I know, I know, what better present could I give myself?) :)

Yup, just 2 wee years old when I was pushchaired round Faslane submarine base. (Now that's a holiday. :P )

So, will definitely be nice to get up to the proper North! 8-)

I had this written on the calendar but the PDC officials darts cup is being held on the same day and, as reigning champ and £100 to the winner at stake, I've chosen to do that instead so count me out.

(also, it's now looking like it might be cheaper than previously anticipated, which may be good news to all those on a tight budget!)

Any confirmation of the 3rd date? Blagging acommodation off someone, and they need to know when so as to make the time available.

Ah cool, not too far from me at all. I couldn't find a direct link for the club anywhere!

Only down side about that bit of town is that it's probably as far as you'll get from a pub anywhere in the city (ten minutes on foot!!!! :o )

Would be great to see you there, Paul.

Also of note is that there's a Travelodge quite close to the venue, which might be handy for people.

I've decided to book myself into the one right next to Waverley station. Under £100 for 2 nights isn't too shabby. 8-)

Definitely interested in coming to this, although this topic seems to have fizzled out. How do we sign up? Just post a comment in here saying "in"?

These are the known details so far, which I'll put in a single post to save everyone having to piece it together from all the previous posts - correct me if any of this is wrong:

Saturday 3rd November 2012, Braid Bowling Club, Cluny Gardens, Edinburgh, £10 per person.

For those coming from London and its environs, here are the results of my basic research on transport options: you've got Megabus (hellishly cheap, by which I mean cheap and hellish), train (expensive, but takes about half the time of the Megabus) or plane (faster and cheaper than the train).

Thanks for bumping this topic Graeme! This is most definitely still on and I'm happy to start taking payments of £10 via PayPal at mike@mjbrown.demon.co.uk (PM me if you'd like to discuss other payment options). I'll add all paid up members to the first post in this topic in time-honoured fashion. Apex train tickets should be available pretty soon, if they're not already (does anyone know?) The day is likely to follow a similar timetable to COLIN, i.e. starting around 11 or 12 and ending about 6, at which point we can go in search of the nearest decent pub!

Haha. Thanks Ryan. Just to add a bit to this, I'm tending towards a start time for Round 1 of midday, to give people plenty of time to arrive if they're coming up on the Saturday, assuming my co- (or is that Co-?) organisers agree.

I could be interested in doing this, but there is the Abu Dhabi GP that weekend, but good luck also means that I happen to have the following week off work (something that always helps), so it's in the balance.

There are loads of B&Bs within reasonable distance, no particular recommendations though. Given the time of year, it's probably a good time for deals too.

There's only limited space in the room, so they're aiming to limit participation to 36, including the 18 (so far) club members who have booked. That leaves about 9 places, so if you're thinking of going but haven't confirmed yet, would be a good idea to do so soon!

Anyone else up for this? There are now only four weeks to go and the club ideally wants to know numbers by the 15th. So basically what Innis said. :)

Probably sub-zero if it's a typical November day in Scotland. :) But seriously, hope you can make it. The more people that do, the cooler it's likely to be!
