COLIN 2012 recaps

In the absence of a COLIN 2012 recap thread, I humbly submit this one. I'll kick off with the match Dinos billed as "the final that should have been", and which "by popular demand" was played last in the group of three as some wanted to watch the ending...
COLIN 2012 recap for Saturday 28 January 2012, table 1, game 6.

Round 1: S A P I H O T T T
C1: photist
C2: PATIOS (6)
OT: PATHOS (6) PATOIS (6) PITHOS (6) PITOTS (6) PITTAS (6) POISHA (6) POTASH (6)
Score: 0–6 (max 6)
Dinos rules out Mark's opening word after scurrying around to find a dictionary without anyone's head buried in it. PHOTISM is in though.
Round 2: T P R K O I O E E
C1: TROOPIE (7)
C2: POKIER (6)
Score: 7–6 (max 13)
Mark takes what would be the first of many darrenical maxes in this game.
Round 3: V E M A S I F R P
C1: VAMPIRES (8)
C2: VAMPIRES (8)
Score: 15–14 (max 21)
Two VAMPIRES, and Dinos mentions that the game is still "as tight as it could possibly be... well, almost." Over to the Acme Supermathatron 7000 for the first numbers game...
Round 4: 3, 4, 5, 1, 2, 10. Target: 426.
C1: 426. (10)
C2: 423.
Score: 25–14 (max 31)
This was to be a recurring theme of the day. Turns out I can't do six small any more. Mark finds one of the many ways of making 426.
Round 5: S Y L L A I U D U
C1: USUALLY (7)
C2: SADLY (5)
Score: 32–14 (max 38)
Sadly, Mark doesn't usually miss sevens.
Round 6: N I L O M E T J E
C1: TEMENOI (7)
C2: MOTILE (6)
Score: 39–14 (max 45)
Another darren, another seven points for Mark. TEMENOI is the plural of TEMENOS which is a sacred enclosure surrounding a temple. At this point, not really keeping track of the score, I asked Dinos "have I lost yet, or is that the next round?" Turned out I was 25 behind.
Round 7: C N M Q A A E R E
C1: RACEME (6)
C2: MENACER (7)
Score: 39–21 (max 52)
Mark and I had been talking about RACEME and RACEMATE in the pub that lunchtime. I knew RACEMATE from when I had RACEMEN^ disallowed on the show; Susie said RACEMATE was in, but not RACEMEN. After then I learned that MENACER is an acceptable anagram, but luckily for me I'd not thought to mention this during our conversation at lunch. Mark was ecstatic about this after I offered MENACER and kept the game alive. Really.
Round 8: 50, 7, 1, 4, 4, 1. Target: 826.
C1: 825.
C2: 826. (50*4+7)*4-1-1 (10)
Score: 39–31 (max 62)
Mark's 18 ahead, and asks for "the easiest one large possible", and who can blame him. Countdown's Electronic Calculator In Lincoln patiently listens to this advice and completely ignores it, serving up 826. Mark's one away, and uncharacteristically for that day I manage to get ten points in a numbers game.
Two rounds ago I thought that after all of Dinos' build-up and his making sure the game was played last so as to let everyone watch, it'd turn out to be an anticlimactic flop. Before round 7 I wasn't happy with how I'd performed, not because I felt I had to win, but because everyone was expecting a more competitive game than it had been up to that point. But as it turned out the game would be decided on the last round.
Dinos fetches the conundrum paper, talks up the occasion to the newly-arrived spectators and reveals the crucial conundrum...
Round 9: C O O P S T A L I
C1 buzzes on 1 second to say APOSTOLIC which is correct.
Score: 49–31 (max 72)
BANG, "APOSTOLIC, YES!" says Mark about as quickly as you read those words. It was the first time Mark and I had played outside of apterous, and given
recent history it's a game that meant a lot to him. I think he even smiled briefly. I'm just glad I could mount something of a comeback towards the end so
that the match wasn't a big disappointment for everyone who wanted to watch, but throughout most of this game I was completely outplayed, so it's a truly deserved victory for Mark.
