COLIN 2012 recaps

Post by Graeme Cole »

In the absence of a COLIN 2012 recap thread, I humbly submit this one. I'll kick off with the match Dinos billed as "the final that should have been", and which "by popular demand" was played last in the group of three as some wanted to watch the ending...

COLIN 2012 recap for Saturday 28 January 2012, table 1, game 6.

C1: Mark Deeks (2 wins, 1 loss, 175 points.)
C2: Graeme Cole (2 wins, 1 loss, 160 points.)
DC: Dinos Sfyris.
OT: Other words or solutions.

R01: S A P I H O T T T
R02: T P R K O I O E E
R03: V E M A S I F R P
R04: 3, 4, 5, 1, 2, 10. Target: 426.
R05: S Y L L A I U D U
R06: N I L O M E T J E
R07: C N M Q A A E R E
R08: 50, 7, 1, 4, 4, 1. Target: 826.
R09: C O O P S T A L I (conundrum)

And now a brief interlude before our main feature:

Round 1: S A P I H O T T T

C1: photist
C2: PATIOS (6)
OT: PATHOS (6) PATOIS (6) PITHOS (6) PITOTS (6) PITTAS (6) POISHA (6) POTASH (6)
Score: 0–6 (max 6)

Dinos rules out Mark's opening word after scurrying around to find a dictionary without anyone's head buried in it. PHOTISM is in though.

Round 2: T P R K O I O E E

C1: TROOPIE (7)
C2: POKIER (6)
Score: 7–6 (max 13)

Mark takes what would be the first of many darrenical maxes in this game.

Round 3: V E M A S I F R P

C1: VAMPIRES (8)
C2: VAMPIRES (8)
Score: 15–14 (max 21)

Two VAMPIRES, and Dinos mentions that the game is still "as tight as it could possibly be... well, almost." Over to the Acme Supermathatron 7000 for the first numbers game...

Round 4: 3, 4, 5, 1, 2, 10. Target: 426.

C1: 426. (10)
C2: 423.
Score: 25–14 (max 31)

This was to be a recurring theme of the day. Turns out I can't do six small any more. Mark finds one of the many ways of making 426.

Round 5: S Y L L A I U D U

C1: USUALLY (7)
C2: SADLY (5)
Score: 32–14 (max 38)

Sadly, Mark doesn't usually miss sevens.

Round 6: N I L O M E T J E

C1: TEMENOI (7)
C2: MOTILE (6)
Score: 39–14 (max 45)

Another darren, another seven points for Mark. TEMENOI is the plural of TEMENOS which is a sacred enclosure surrounding a temple. At this point, not really keeping track of the score, I asked Dinos "have I lost yet, or is that the next round?" Turned out I was 25 behind.

Round 7: C N M Q A A E R E

C1: RACEME (6)
C2: MENACER (7)
Score: 39–21 (max 52)

Mark and I had been talking about RACEME and RACEMATE in the pub that lunchtime. I knew RACEMATE from when I had RACEMEN^ disallowed on the show; Susie said RACEMATE was in, but not RACEMEN. After then I learned that MENACER is an acceptable anagram, but luckily for me I'd not thought to mention this during our conversation at lunch. Mark was ecstatic about this after I offered MENACER and kept the game alive. Really.

Round 8: 50, 7, 1, 4, 4, 1. Target: 826.

C1: 825.
C2: 826. (50*4+7)*4-1-1 (10)
Score: 39–31 (max 62)

Mark's 18 ahead, and asks for "the easiest one large possible", and who can blame him. Countdown's Electronic Calculator In Lincoln patiently listens to this advice and completely ignores it, serving up 826. Mark's one away, and uncharacteristically for that day I manage to get ten points in a numbers game.

Two rounds ago I thought that after all of Dinos' build-up and his making sure the game was played last so as to let everyone watch, it'd turn out to be an anticlimactic flop. Before round 7 I wasn't happy with how I'd performed, not because I felt I had to win, but because everyone was expecting a more competitive game than it had been up to that point. But as it turned out the game would be decided on the last round.

Dinos fetches the conundrum paper, talks up the occasion to the newly-arrived spectators and reveals the crucial conundrum...

Round 9: C O O P S T A L I

C1 buzzes on 1 second to say APOSTOLIC which is correct.
Score: 49–31 (max 72)

BANG, "APOSTOLIC, YES!" says Mark about as quickly as you read those words. It was the first time Mark and I had played outside of apterous, and given
recent history it's a game that meant a lot to him. I think he even smiled briefly. I'm just glad I could mount something of a comeback towards the end so
that the match wasn't a big disappointment for everyone who wanted to watch, but throughout most of this game I was completely outplayed, so it's a truly deserved victory for Mark.

Re: COLIN 2012 recaps

Post by Graeme Cole »

COLIN 2012 recap for Saturday 28 January 2012, table 6, game 9.

The last game of the day... Dinos and Jon Corby are battling in front of James Robinson at the top table with a place in the final at stake, which would turn out to be a rematch. It's close at the top with about half a dozen people in contention.

Meanwhile, somewhere in the corner of the hall, a game starts on table 6 which has no bearing on any of this. It's a good game though, so I photographed the scoresheet for it so I could do a recap. Ryan and Michelle have played 339 games on apterous covering a wide range of variants, with Ryan emerging victorious on 316 of those occasions, but this is the first time they've faced each other at a co-event.

C1: Michelle Nevitt (3 wins, 2 losses, 254 points). To get to this position she's beaten two Pratesis and some nerdy-boy-graduate who now presides over this game.
C2: Ryan Taylor (3 wins, 2 losses, 279 points). On the way he's beaten Diane Pirates, Jen Mandates, and me after an interesting finale where we both buzzed for the conundrum more or less simultaneously with the same wrong answer, to great amusement. Well, maybe you had to be there.
DC: Graeme Cole.
OT: Other words or solutions.

R01: R R Y M A O A F O
R02: D N T T I I E A B
R03: W R N S A U A A A

R05: B P L M E A U L D
R06: S R G J E I A C T
R07: P D Y L E E E Z T
R08: 25, 2, 4, 8, 6, 10. Target: 744.
R09: A P A P T I T E L (conundrum)

Round 1: R R Y M A O A F O

C1: ARROYO (6)
C2: MARRY (5)
OT: ARMORY (6)
Score: 6–0 (max 6)

Ye what?! This one came out of nowhere. An ARROYO is a steep-sided gully formed by water flow, often found in south-western US, and it's a fantastic spot that puts Michelle six points up. I was dithering about with FARM and had dismissed ARMORY for being too American, but actually it's an acceptable spelling as an alternative term for heraldry.

Round 2: D N T T I I E A B

C1: BATTEN (6)
C2: BATTED (6)
DC: TAINTED (7)
OT: BANDITTI (8)
Score: 12–6 (max 14)

BANDITTI is one of the more pretentious plurals of BANDIT.

Round 3: W R N S A U A A A

C1: SAUNA (5)
C2: SAUNA (5)
OT: ANURA (5) ASANA (5) ASURA (5) AURAS (5) WARNS (5)
Score: 17–11 (max 19)

Steamed pancakes all round. An ANURA is an amphibian of the order Anura, such as a frog or toad. ASANA is a posture adopted in performing hatha yoga, whatever that is. An ASURA was a divine being in the Vedic period; they feature in Indian and Zoroastrian mythology.

Round 4: 25, 5, 7, 3, 5, 8. Target: 931.

C1: 933. (7)
C2: 933. (7)
OT: 931. (25*5+8)*7 (10)
Score: 24–18 (max 29)

Tricky numbers game, and Ryan and Michelle both get two away. At least one of them did 25*(7*5+5-3)+8, but I can't remember who. You can get one away by making the 37 out of 8*5-3, and an exact solution exists which I didn't spot but the numbers solver did.

Round 5: B P L M E A U L D

C1: PLUMBED (7)
C2: PLUMBED (7)
OT: DUPABLE (7) MEDULLA (7)
Score: 31–25 (max 36)

Sevens this time, and the gap is still six points.

Round 6: S R G J E I A C T

C1: CAGIEST (7)
C2: CAGIEST (7)
DC: TRIAGES (7)
OT: AGRESTIC (8)
Score: 38–32 (max 44)

AGRESTIC makes an appearance, waving its arms around completely unnoticed by me or anyone else. It's an adjective meaning rural or rustic.

Round 7: P D Y L E E E Z T

C1: DEPLETE (7)
C2: DEPLETE (7)
Score: 45–39 (max 51)

Only one word jumps out here, and Michelle is still six points ahead as she has been since round 1. Numbers time...

Round 8: 25, 2, 4, 8, 6, 10. Target: 744.

C1: 742.
C2: 744. 25*(8*4-2)-6 (10)
Score: 45–49 (max 61)

Michelle goes for one large, but it's Ryan who spots the solution to 744, and after being behind for seven rounds he's now four ahead going into a crucial conundrum, which is...

Round 9: A P A P T I T E L

C1 buzzes on 2 seconds to say PALPITATE which is correct.
Score: 55–49 (max 71)

BANG! Michelle steals it back with a quick conundrum spot to win the first co-event Taylor-Nevitt face-off and to finish COLIN with four wins. It was that and the brilliant ARROYO in the first round that swung what was a very close game.

BANG, "APOSTOLIC, YES!" says Mark about as quickly as you read those words.

Sorry if that came across as dickish. It was just a hell of a release, what with that being (a) the final that should have been, and that I had spent weeks thinking about, and (b) almost the greatest collapse ever. Didn't intend to cause any offense. I love you man. You know that.

Don't worry, it didn't come across as dickish at all. It was a great game and a great finish.

Only got notes for 4 games, will try and keep it snappier.

My third game:

R02: N I N A S E M T G
R03: Z R P T E O O U R

R07: N A S I R A T A A
R08: 25, 1, 6, 4, 1, 10. Target: 524.
R09: I C A P I T O Z Z (conundrum)

Round 1: C M S R O E I N A

C1: ROMAINES (8)
C2: ROMANISE (8)
OT: CARMINES (8) INCOMERS (8) MORAINES (8) ROMANCES (8) SCENARIO (8) SERMONIC (8)
Score: 8–8 (max 8). Rob might have had MORAINES instead, I can't quite remember. Rich offered ROMANCES I think.

Round 2: N I N A S E M T G

C1: STEAMING (8)
C2: STEAMING (8)
OT: ANTIGENS (8) GENTIANS (8) MANGIEST (8) MEANINGS (8)
Score: 16–16 (max 16)

Round 3: Z R P T E O O U R

C1: POUTER (6)
C2: TROOPER (7)
OT: UPROOTER (8)
Score: 16–23 (max 24), I edge ahead, but knowing how good Rob is with his conundrums, I know that my upcoming 4L is going to be significant as it's the only advantage I have against someone of his ability.

Round 4: 100, 75, 50, 25, 3, 10. Target: 987.

C1: 987. (100-75/(50+25))*10-3 (10)
C2: 987. (100-50/(75-25))*10-3 (10)
Score: 26–33 (max 34). An easy 4 large if you know how to make the 1, and Rob stays in touch. Chance lost.

Round 5: T U Y U T U C O F

C1: cotty
C2: cutout
OT: CUTTY (5) TUFTY (5)
Score: 26–33 (max 39). I was very confident about cutout, but it's hyphenated, and Rob misses a chance to draw a little closer with those tricky 5s.

Round 6: R N G E A O S R O

C1: RANGERS (7)
C2: ORANGES (7)
DC: GROANERS (8)
Score: 33–40 (max 47), a chance goes begging for either of us there as we both surprisingly miss GROANERS. From memory, Rob might have had it noted but wasn't 100%, and/or Richard might have offered it from DC.

Round 7: N A S I R A T A A

C1: ARTISAN (7)
C2: ARTISAN (7)
OT: TSARINA (7)
Score: 40–47 (max 54), straightforward enough 7 for us both. I was looking for E at the end for ARTESIAN et al.

Round 8: 25, 1, 6, 4, 1, 10. Target: 524.

C1: 524. (10+6+4+1)*25+1 (10)
C2: 525.
Score: 50–47 (max 64). Very gettable target and I miss it, but will it be a significant blow?

Round 9: I C A P I T O Z Z

C1 buzzes on 0.0001 seconds to say PIZZICATO which is correct.
Score: 60–47 (max 74).

Well, that's that. I might have exaggerated the time slightly, but I'd barely seen it when Rob buzzed. It's a musical term to do with plucking. Insert one tenuous innuendo to relieve the tension, and it's game over - congrats to Rob, and I feel a bit better about missing the numbers as I'd have lost the game on the conundrum anyway. (Can't remember the exact scramble, but that'll do).

My fourth game:

R01: D E D A S I B C V
R02: E P I D E L K F I
R03: G E M O T O W O U
R04: 25, 2, 9, 6, 8, 5. Target: 925.

Round 1: D E D A S I B C V

C1: ADVISED (7)
C2: BADDIES (7)
OT: ADVICES (7) CADDIES (7)
Score: 7–7 (max 7), solid.

Round 2: E P I D E L K F I

C1: KELPIE (6)
C2: DEFILE (6)
OT: DEFILE (6) PELIKE (6)
Score: 13–13 (max 13). A kelpie is an Australian sheepdog. Not a fish, as I thought, but there's no points for definitions.

Round 3: G E M O T O W O U

C1: OUTGO (5)
C2: OUTGO (5)
Score: 18–18 (max 18). Cringeworthy yet darrenic max. Every time you declare OUTGO, God kills a kitten.

Round 4: 25, 2, 9, 6, 8, 5. Target: 925.

C1: 925. (8*6-(2+9))*25 (10)
C2: 925. (6*5+(9-2))*25 (10)
Score: 28–28 (max 28), can't remember Rich's method exactly, but there are lots of ways to generate the 37 needed.

Round 5: N E B I R U T D P

C1: PRINTED (7)
C2: TURBINE (7)
OT: UNDERTIP (8)
Score: 35–35 (max 36), first max that we miss, and very gettable too. Rich toys with TURBINED, but makes the right call in the end.

Round 6: N I H O R O S I I

C1: IRONS (5)
C2: RHINOS (6)
OT: NOIRISH (7)
Score: 35–41 (max 43). Rich has both NOIRISH and RHINOS, but after I fail to even see the 6, he uses the advantage of declaring second to play safe.

Round 7: S O F E P E S T M

C1: METOPES (7)
C2: POETESS (7)
Score: 42–48 (max 50), we keep DC quiet by getting both maxes between us.

Round 8: 100, 75, 50, 25, 9, 6. Target: 176.

C1: 176. 100+75+(9-6)-(50/25) (10)
C2: 176. 100+75+(9-6)-(50/25) (10)
Score: 52–58 (max 60), again, I was crying out for a tricky 4 large, but it just wasn't happening. (I'm sure Rich had a different method for this, but I can't see one).

Round 9: T A I N D Y O P S

C1 buzzes on 20 seconds to say DYSTOPIAN which is correct.
Score: 62–58 (max 70). I wasn't anywhere near 100% with it, but I decide to get my guess in first after about 20 sec, and Rob says it's good, for a pretty undeserved win. Way to say thanks to Rich for giving me a lift up to Lincoln...

Round 1: T E R A P E R O Z

C1: OPERATE (7)
C2: TRAPEZE (7)
OT: PERORATE (8)
Score: 7–7 (max 8). I kinda knew there was an 8 there because I'd heard off other people that PRORATES makes a 9 with any vowel. I just didn't know what it was. Wanted an F last letter.

Round 2: C F T I O U Y T S

C1: OUTFITS (7)
C2: -
Score: 14–7 (max 15), I can't for the life of me remember what Jim declared (sorry!), but it wasn't OUTFITS, which was the only 7.

Round 3: G O R E N U R O T

C1: OUTGONE (7)
C2: GRUNTER (7)
OT: GROUTER (7)
Score: 21–14 (max 22), again can't remember exactly what Jim went with in the end but he had all three written down. Comprehensive.

Round 4: 50, 9, 6, 5, 10, 5. Target: 292.

C1: 292. 50*6-9+5/5 (10)
C2: 292. 50*6-9+5/5 (10)
Score: 31–24 (max 32), not too challenging but very solid.

Round 5: N F S P U U O S E

C1: POSSE (5)
C2: OPENS (5)
DC: SPOUSE (6)
OT: OPUSES (6) SPOUSE (6)
Score: 36–29 (max 38), we both miss SPOUSE even though it's sitting right there in the selection, and we both feel a tiny bit silly when Jessica points it out.

Round 6: T A M A S A H R A

C1: ASTHMA (6)
C2: ASHRAM (6)
OT: ASHRAMA (7) TAMASHA (7)
Score: 42–35 (max 45), hard luck for Jim with a great word that he didn't know could take an -A after it - both are related, and to do with Hindu worship and meditation. Jessica finds TAMASHA in the dictionary by accident after looking up something similar. Keeping with the Asian theme, it's a traditional theatre production in India.

Round 7: N D P I A E T E B

C1: PAINTED (7)
C2: bepainted
OT: BETAINE (7)
Score: 49–35 (max 52), Jim takes a risk to try and get ahead for the conundrum, and unfortunately a little ambitious for OED as Jessica rules it out. It's CSW valid, though... But can Jim beat me at 4 large?

Round 8: 100, 75, 50, 25, 8, 2. Target: 501.

C1: 501. 75*8-100+(25*2)/50 (10)
C2: 501. 50*8+100+75/25-2 (10)
Score: 59–45 (max 62), fairly straightforward again, and a couple of ways of getting it, as I work down from 600 and Jim works up from 400.

Round 9: B E L S H L A C K

C1 buzzes on 23 seconds to say SHELLBACK which is correct.
Score: 69–45 (max 72), I was kinda relaxed for the non-crucial which might have helped. Hard one to make out with so few vowels, and my strategy was to stick some random 4 and 5 letter words together until I came out with something plausible, and must have got it after about 20-25 sec. All in all a decent and enjoyable game, and maybe a little flattering in the end, but I won't complain.

Round 1: V S K R N A E E W

C1: WANKERS (7)
C2: WANKERS (7)
OT: SNEAKER (7) WEAKENS (7) WEANERS (7) WEAVERS (7)
Score: 7–7 (max 7). Loads of sevens, but you kind of have to. I think Miss Pratesi had the same, but she might have had another though.

Round 2: T A G I M E W E G

C1: GAMETE (6)
C2: GAMETE (6)
OT: GAMGEE (6) MAGGIE (6) METAGE (6)
Score: 13–13 (max 13)

Round 3: V N H N L U I O O

C1: ONION (5)
C2: NOUN (4)
OT: OVOLI (5) UNION (5)
Score: 18–13 (max 18), I somehow miss ONION and UNION, too busy looking for six to remember to get a five, perhaps.

Round 4: 100, 75, 50, 25, 10, 3. Target: 869.

C1: 872.
C2: 870. (100-3)*10-(75+25) (7)
Score: 18–20 (max 25), target isn't possible, so 870 is very solid, edges me back in front after the debacle in round 3.

Round 5: R O C U M E R E S

C1: SECURER (7)
C2: SCOURER (7)
OT: RECOURSE (8) RESOURCE (8)
Score: 25–27 (max 33), again not sure what Jessica had but it was definitely a 7. Jim has RECOURSE for 8, and RESOURCE is there too of course.

Round 6: T M G N B O O A A

C1: BATMAN (6)
C2: BOATMAN (7)
Score: 25–34 (max 40), Jessica makes me feel guilty as I get BOATMAN to extend the lead, but I'm still within ten points so the situation doesn't really change.

Round 7: D E S U R U C A A

C1: ARCADES (7)
C2: ARCADES (7)
OT: CAESURA (7) CRUSADE (7)
Score: 32–41 (max 47), solid.

Round 8: 50, 25, 9, 8, 5, 3. Target: 698.

C1: 697. 50*(9+5)-3 (7)
C2: 697. 50*(9+5)-3 (7)
OT: 698. ((25*9)+5)*3+8 (10)
Score: 39–48 (max 57), one away is easy but there must be a few ways to get this. There always is in 2 large. But checking a numbers solver online, this is apparently "the most intuitive method", and it's hardly easy. This means we go into a crucial conundrum and I have that worst kind of psychological lead, 9 points, knowing I could easily lose by a single point.

Round 9: B A D G I R L A I

C2 buzzes on 15 seconds to say BIGRADIAL which is incorrect.
C1 does not buzz.
The answer was GARIBALDI.
Score: 39–48 (max 67). Not familiar with that one. A quick internet browse tells me that it's any one of: a cocktail, a biscuit, a type of blouse, a type of fish. Take your pick. So, another close game, albeit quite low scoring, and cheers to Jessica (who films for CD sometime in the summer)

I thought I'd have a first attempt at recapping one of my games. This particular game is a memorable one for me.

Round 1: NQNIEUUEW

C1: EQUINE (6)
C2: UNIQUE (6)
OT: -
Score 6-6 (max 6)

Between us Kirk and I find the only two max words available and get off to a good start.

Round 2: RSREAALNA

C1: ARSENAL (7)
C2: SNARLER (7)
OT:-
Score 13-13 (max 13)

Repeat comment from round one

Round 3: PSDEOUMON

C1: MENUDOS (7)
C2: SPOONED (7)
OT:- SNOOPED (7) SPUMONE (7) UNPOSED (7)
Score 20-20 (max 20)

Kirk declares a typically obscure word and is amused when I get something really obvious, and we go into the first numbers on a max game.

Round 4: 50, 100, 9, 9, 8, 8. Target: 183

C1: 182 – (9x9)+(8/8)+100 (7)
C2: 182 - (9x9)+(8/8)+100 (7)
OT:- (100-9*8)*8-50+9 = 183 (10)
Score 27-27 (max 30)

Both of our chances of a max game evaporate in a pretty tough one for a 2 large.

Round 5: GBNIOIHNS

C1: SHINING (7)
C2: SHINING (7)
OT:- NOISING (7), NOSHING (7)
Score 34-34 (max 37)

If I see –ING in the first six letters I have a rule to pick three more consonants. Kirk commented that this was a very flat round as indeed it was.

Round 6: DCBIUOSLJ

C1: CUBOIDS (7)
C2: CLOUDS (6)
OT:-
Score 41- 34 (max 44)

Kirk pulls ahead for the first time, he fished for CUBOIDAL with the last letter but meant to pick a vowel and instead chose a consonant.

Round 7: TTLOIUYES

C1: TOILETS (7)
C2: STOUTLY (7)
OT:- LITOTES (7) OUTLETS (7) STYLITE (7) TESTILY (7)
Score 48 -41 (max 51)

I only spotted my seven in the last seconds of the time, missing some far more obvious sevens, but with two rounds left I’m still within 10 of the tournament favourite, can I pull off the upset?

Round 8: 7, 7, 6, 10, 6, 4. Target 822.

C1: 824 (7) – I can’t recall Kirk’s method, sorry.
C2: 820 ((7+7)x 6)-(6-4)x 10 (7)
OT: ((6+7)*10)+7)*6 = 822 (10)
Score 55- 48 (max 61)

Kirk rightly opts for 6 small but we are both 2 away leading to a crucial conundrum.

Round 9: GLACYSLAW

C2 buzzes on about 6 seconds to say SCALLYWAG which is correct
Score 55-58 (max – 71)

So I pulled off quite an upset, beating the pre-tournament favourite. Just want to say though that Kirk is a great guy and I enjoyed every minute of this. Michelle was a great host also.

I am assuming the max is 30 but I still don’t have a solution so it’s possible we are still on a max game (someone please edit this if 1 away is indeed the max).
(100-9*8)*8-50+9 = 183, so says my solver. Not sure if there are other methods available.

((6+7)*10)+7)*6 = 822. Again, so says the solver. Congratulations on beating Kirk btw! He did tell me but I certainly wasn't conscious of it when I played you. You were very unlucky against me with that nine, which our game totally hinged on. Actually, I got pretty lucky all day. Just goes to show that Countdown is essentially a game of luck.

Sorry James, Ryan was robbed there. It's in - the phonecam doesn't lie. I expect it's easy to miss if you take the not entirely unreasonable expectation that it would be nested under POETIC, but actually it's there on its own.

I think Ryan should be invited back to try again next year. :-)

So, my winning run came to an end against a formidable opponent in Dinos, although in fairness, it was my rubbishness in missing the obvious answer in the last numbers, then making an even bigger tit of myself in the conundrum, that basically forfeited me the game.

Never mind, just Jon Corby to play in the next game. What could possibly go wrong?

Unless someone can verify it quickly, I might have conned a win somehow................
Sorry James, Ryan was robbed there. It's in - the phonecam doesn't lie. I expect it's easy to miss if you take the not entirely unreasonable expectation that it would be nested under POETIC, but actually it's there on its own.

I think Ryan should be invited back to try again next year. :-)
Heh. Wow I'm on a roll tonight with dickish twat posts but when I submitted POETICS I was actually pretty sure of it despite me acting like it was risky. When Dan said it wasn't in I sort of wanted to say "what? are you sure? of course it bloody is!!" but to be honest I didn't want to cause any awkwardness and if truth be told, I didn't really give a shit where I finished overall at any point before, during or after COLIN so no need to worry. That win is yours James! All yours.

Yeah, you've played it (successfully) several times on apterous.

I reckon you could've actually won if you gave 0.05% as much of a shit about your own performance as you do about Michelle's  ;)

I was using Michelle's just as an example to highlight the whole thing about how people are seeded andwhat seed they were. It would just be nice to know so we are not all left guessing that was all. And I only said about Michelle's because I totally said that she was gonna win a prize for finishing so high for a first timer and everything and then Amie's name was read out and I felt pretty embarrassed.

I second this. It definitely be good to know the seed order.

Also, does anyone else think that a single recap thread is too unwieldy? I reckon they could all just have their own thread like "real" games. Maybe a subforum for recaps of non-TV games? This would include Apterous competitions as well as CO events.

Yeah, but the problem is when you're ranking 36 people and then dividing them into three pots, there's potentially going to be a large difference between player 13 and player 24 (who are in the same pot) and very little difference between player 24 and 25 (who are in different pots). You could argue that there might be a better system for calculating who has overachieved (as player 24 finishing 1 point behind player 13 would be more deserving of the prize) but that might be one for the stats-heads.

The only reason anyone really knows about the pots is because of the overachievers prizes, and it would be a shame to lose them as it gives everybody something to play for. It's a difficult one for Ben because, if he published the list, there will ALWAYS be arguments about the seedings (after all, he has no consistent set of data for everybody to work with), so I don't think he should. He'll never please everybody like that. Clearly he has some tough decisions to make about who should go where, and no doubt he'll get some wrong. However, I do find it somewhat baffling to vehemently argue that somebody who played well and finished 11th definitely should have been seeded lower than someone who finished 16th. Isn't this an indication that he got this one right? I mean, could anyone really now construct an argument that I shouldn't have been top seed? I certainly can't come up with anything remotely convincing.

So I do agree with you that Michelle performed exceptionally well, but I think it's a bit unfair to hassle Ben about it, when actually he was right anyway. If you were really adamant that she deserved a prize, you could have always given her one yourself.

Good point which I hadn't thought of.

If it came across as hassling, I didn't mean it to, you know that. And Ben knows that. I was just bringing it up as I know a few people raised the issue about seedings in person so I was just publicly raising it. Agreed that there will always be a dispute over seedings regardless however it is done. Although I would now argue that where possible, you try to be as consistent as possible with how you reach a decision on seed. It seems illogical to place one person's seed (Michelle) on their on-screen performance and then seemingly dismiss this when deciding another person's (Andy). And yet more contradictions came out when Gevin asked about why he was Pot B (because he finished in the second third in his last two events) - well Amie finished in the second third (16/30) at COLIN 2011 and yet she is in Pot C. Bizarre. But that's the end of it, I'm not having a go, it's just my opinion on the thing.

Oh, and well done on winning COLIN 2012 Jon! You cunt.*

*Pretty cool how you predicted it beforehand though.

McGurn was a high pot B, as stated in the other thread. The pots weren't of equal size, which was an oversight on my part that I've already issued a mea culpa for.

Corby is pretty much 100% right in everything he says, though.

Valid on Aptodic, and I offered it and it was accepted on the show as recently as June. Haven't got me ODE3 to hand, but surely just a blip with the recap writer and not actually an invalid word.

Hmm, this is interesting. I thought it might have been that Joseph forgot to press the "Find automatically" button in the recap writer, which is easily done (I did it in one of the rounds for today's recap, as James was kind enough to point out), but that's not the case because there's an "OT:" entry for that round.

After some experiment, it turns out TOASTIER is valid in the 15-round recap writer but not in the 9-round recap writer. Perhaps the 9-round recap writer uses an older dictionary because it's normally used to recap old games?

If the Series is older than 42(?) it uses the NODE.

I guess that's conducive to writing recaps for old shows, which is what the 9 rounder is normally used for. Throws up an anomaly here though.

Really.
My new favourite fact about this game is that MENACER isn't even in the ODE3 and it's taken us over six months to notice.
