CoChest Recaps

Post by James Robinson »

As usual in Jeff's tournaments, the day starts with 3 15-rounders against randomly drawn opponents.

For me, it was a case of deja vu again, as my first opponent of the day was Anna Woodward, who was my first opponent at CoLei4 in April.

So, my first crucial of the day, and I manage to get through it....... somehow. Hard luck on Andy, who I knew would be a super tough opponent, but I also knew that my biggest test would be just around the corner in the form of Richard Priest, who took his revenge on Joseph by destroying him 56-21.

But, before the main centrepiece, first was the "mainstream final", basically the final which would decide where everyone else would finish.

CoChest Mainstream Final Recap for Saturday 19 November 2011.

DC: James Robinson and Richard Priest.

So, the finale is here.

The #1 seed, some guy called James Robinson against the #3 seed, Richard Priest.

Robinson lost the coin toss, so Priest took the champions' chair, so here we go. ;) :) :D

C1: #3 Seed Richard Priest (4 wins, 409 points.)
C2: #1 Seed James Robinson (5 wins, 456 points.)
DC: Matt Bayfield and Karen Pearson.

Round 1: L B J E O I D P E

C1: EDIBLE (6)
C2: DIPOLE (6)
DC: BOILED (6) BELIED (6)
OT: BOLIDE (6) DJEBEL (6) ELOPED (6)
Score: 6–6 (max 6)

Round 2: D R U D A O O L N

C1: LARDOON (7)
C2: LARDOON (7)
DC: NODULAR (7)
Score: 13–13 (max 13)

Round 3: 50, 7, 6, 4, 9, 10. Target: 467.

C1: 467. (50 x 9) + 10 + 7 (10)
C2: 467. (50 x 9) + 10 + 7 (10)
Score: 23–23 (max 23)

So, as I expected a nice even (and actually a max) start for us both.

Round 4: E I E Y R H P G U

C1: PURGE (5)
C2: HYPER (5)
Joseph Krol: HEURIGE (7)
Score: 28–28 (max 30)

Joseph steals the show in this round with his brilliant 7. 8-)

Round 5: A A E S W L S I W

C1: ASSAIL (6)
C2: WASSAIL (7)
OT: ALIASES (7)
Score: 28–35 (max 37)

I bet Rich was kicking himself when he said he was sticking with a safe 6, then heard me say 7.

Round 6: 8, 2, 3, 2, 6, 7. Target: 665.

C1: 665. ((8 x 6 x 2) - (3 - 2)) x 7 (10)
C2: 665. ((8 x 6 x 2) - (3 - 2)) x 7 (10)
Score: 38–45 (max 47)

I thought that I might've had a good chance to pull away here, but Rich knows how to stay in tough in a tight situation........

Round 7: E U T R A D E R S

C1 buzzes on 4 seconds to say TREASURED which is correct.
Score: 48–45 (max 57)

.......and how to turn that into a lead a few seconds later.

At that point, I was thinking, not CoLei4 again.......

Round 8: O E E A R Q N F E

C1: NEAR (4)
C2: NEAR (4)
DC: AFORE (5) FREON (5)
OT: RANEE (5)
Score: 52–49 (max 62)

Especially after only finding 4, so was super relieved that Rich only had 4 too. :)

Round 9: T A T O B E T M P

C1: ATTEMPT (7)
C2: ATTEMPT (7)
Score: 59–56 (max 69)

A very good ATTEMPT by us both in that one. 8-)

Round 10: 3, 1, 4, 4, 6, 10. Target: 167.

C1: 167. (4 x 4 x 10) + 6 + 1 (10)
C2: 167. (4 x 4 x 10) + 6 + 1 (10)
Score: 69–66 (max 79)

So, like last time at CoLei4, my two 6 small picks make no difference to the scores.

Round 11: E S A R G O R H A

C1: HOARSER (7)
C2: GHERAOS (7)
OT: AGAROSE (7)
Score: 76–73 (max 86)

More 7's, as the gap still remains at 3.

Round 12: E L Z I R F E T I

C1: FERTILIZE (18)
C2: FERTILIZE (18)
Score: 94–91 (max 104)

I couldn't believe my luck when those letters came out, soon as that 2nd I was turned over, I saw it immediately, while Rich admitted that it took him 15 seconds to get to it, but now it looked like that we were both going to get a ton heading into the conundrum, but did Rich have other ideas............. :?:

Round 13: 50, 9, 3, 7, 1, 4. Target: 285.

C1: 284.
C2: 285. ((50 - 4) x (7 - 1)) + 9 (10)
Score: 94–101 (max 114)

Indeed, but definitely not what he had planned, I'm sure. He only gets 1 away, and I retake the lead with 1 round to go, meaning that, unsurprisingly, it's crucial conundrum time.

Round 14: B A N P L A I C E

C2 buzzes on 2 seconds to say INCAPABLE which is correct.
Final Score: 94–111 (max 124)

There was literally a split-second between us, but Jeff said that he saw me press first, and then I let out all my emotions, mainly because I had waited so long for it, and I just wanted to enjoy it to the full.

Fair play to Rich though, who did give me one the games of my life, and was definitely a more-than-worthy finalist, but his performance was also brilliant, even though he might have been miffed by missing the last numbers and not going for WASSAIL, but he was more than gracious in defeat, and even said it would have been a travesty if I hadn't won it, which I think is pushing it a bit, but it was a classic final.

So, I was very close to winning all 5 CO-events this year, maybe with the exception of Co:Lon, but I did finally break my CO-event winning duck and the feeling is just AWESOME. ;) :) :D  8-)

Here's to COLIN 2012 in January. ;) :) :D

Mega facepalm in that round. I had BIFFOS and BOFFOS written down, knowing they were both in without the S, and was wondering which one to go for but eventually decided on BIFFOS 'cause I pencilled BIFFO. Guess which one was invalid?
