My guess for the conundrum was actually SANGALOGY (obviously still wrong, but at least the right letters)

Thanks Thomas, I had a feeling I was wrong, but wasn't sure.

Tom was unlucky with the round order in this final, having to declare first in rounds 2 and 7. I had written down both REPENTER and CONFABS (not being quite sure of the validity of either), but Tom's declarations made it easy for me to go for the safe 7 and 6 respectively. Had the declaration order been reversed, I'm not sure what I'd've gone with.

What's interesting about the Letters picking in this final, was that in all but round 3 (where I was fishing for a final E for GENEROUS), we both went exclusively for 3-vowel selections.

Unlucky Tom, but you beat a hell to get that far. A fine achievement.

Congratulations, hearty ones at that, to Matt. Always good to see people realise ambitions. Your delight was infectious.

I knew that playing Rich would definitely be a tricky starter, but I sort of turned it to my advantage, especially when faced with those stinky letters games right at the end.

But, it was a good warm-up for what was to come in the rest of the day.........

It's always hard to work out how good an opponent is when a) you have never played them on Apterous and b) their last appearance on Countdown was nearly a decade ago, but I knew Mike would be a challenge as his past performances at CO-events have shown.

So, I wasn't too surprised that he took the lead with DADO, quite an impressive spot with all those D's there. So, I knew I'd have to get him somewhere, and when 6 small didn't work, I had a feeling that the conundrum was probably my most realistic hope, and it proved to be.

So, 2 wins via crucials to start with. Just shows how many quality players there were at this tournament.

So, I was worried about Oli after watching that match with Rob, but I also knew it was going to tough anyway, but after he messed up with twittiest, I thought I had a chance, even when he pulled it back in the next round.

Then, when the time came, I thought, "I'll regret it if I don't", and thank goodness I didn't, and then I thought that I messed up by going for the "safe" 1 large.
But, getting the conundrum was a nice bonus for me to give it more of the sense of a thrashing, even though it nowhere near was.

This is weird. Irrespective of whether he said D, don't you look at the cards? When you were hosting my game against Dinos, I'm fairly sure you were saying all sorts of stupid things for the letters, weren't you?

I looked at the cards for most people, but since James was enunciating so well, I didn't look for the last letter but got right down to business.

It's true. James was announcing them with such a flair that it was both unnecessary and distracting to look at him when he was doing it. That is, until it became necessary.
