Countdown in London 2011

Post by Michael Wallace »

Important note: Don't send any money without confirmation from me that there is a place free for you!

Even more important: there are a handful of extra places now available! email me at countdownlondon@gmail.com if you'd like to grab one of these hot, hot cakes!!

That's right folks. CO:LON is back! Well, it isn't yet, but it will be.

Because it worked well enough last year, and because I'm lazy, we'll be descending on the Sekforde Arms again, with the same format as last year. All the details are on the new look website, so go and have a read. If you came last year then you'll almost certainly want to come again (maybe), and if you didn't have a look at the new look website and see if you can resist.

In case you can't be bothered to read the new look website, then here are the basics:

When? 29th October 2011. Noon until around 7pm.
Where? The Sekforde Arms 34 Sekforde Street, London, EC1R 0HA.
How much? £10
How much?! I just said, £10. But for that you get a day of Countdown, in a pub, the chance to win fangtastic prizes, and everyone goes home with the limited edition CO:LON freebies :o
Format? 3 rounds of 3-to-a-table Countdowny goodness. Then a playoff between the top two at the end of the day.
What if I sign up but then realise I can't make it? No refunds I'm afraid, but last year we had a number of reserves who would love to have your place, so do let me know if you have a change of heart.

What's different this year?

Nothing much, although there are a number of small changes that should make the whole thing run more smoothly. On top of that there is a fun, Halloweeny feature - The Count's Magic Hat Game! See the new look website for details.

To sign up, email me at countdownlondon@gmail.com, letting me know whether you can pay by Paypal (the default) or if you'd like to pay another way. Assuming there are still spaces, I'll get back to you with my Paypal details.

I'd also like to say that the Circle Line will be out of action that day. The Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan will still work.

The Circle Line hasn't worked on a weekend since about 1476. But it doesn't matter. It has no unique stations.

I don't bother with e-mails. I just pay straight away. (Once I can find your PayPal address from last year.) (Or maybe load up the brand new website again.)

Also do you like what I've done with this post subject?

If you send me any money without me confirming you have a place then I'm just going to interpret that as you sending me some £££ as a present.

(In actual seriousness, I'd quite like to have everyone email me so I have it all in one place and I don't risk fucking shit up.)

James - you seem to have sent payment without emailing me first. This is potentially a bit risky because with a finite number of spaces they're liable to run out (and this is why I ask everyone to email me rather than just telling them where to send the money). Fortunately it isn't a problem at this stage, but others take note!

Last year we managed to fit 30 people in, and with 16 people already paid up (and a few pending) it's looking like it will fill up fairly soon. Sorry to not be able to be more helpful. Once we are filled up there will be a waiting list like last year, so if people drop out the first name on the waiting list gets first dibs.

That's all cool. As it's the most accessible co event for me to get to I really want to make it. I'll do my best to arrange it as soon as possible. I would like to know where people who are going but who aren't from from London will be staying. That would be a big help. Cheers.

CO:LON 2011 is now full up. Thanks to those who have signed up (and paid), although there are a few stragglers who I'll be chasing up soon enough. If you haven't signed up but would like the chance to attend, send me an email and I can put you on the waiting list.

So what happens if we didn't register in time? Do we just turn up anyway and hang around in the bar downstairs, wait for you to all finish the Countdown aspect of the whole thing, and then we can all get a burger together?

I'm going to see whether a more efficient arrangement of the room can increase the amount of space we have available (I have a couple of ideas that will hopefully pay off). Not sure when I'll be able to get down to the pub to find out, but I'll keep people posted.

As for spectators - the reason spaces are limited is because there is limited space. If there was room for spectators then there would be room for players. Obviously people are welcome to just come to the pub and hang out downstairs (I mean, it's not like I can stop you), but I'd ask that if you do decide to do that that you don't come up and try and watch whilst games are going on. Firstly it's pretty boring (trust me, I was doing exactly that last year), and secondly there is very little room.

In happier news, the 2011 CO:LON freebies have arrived! Excited?

I fear that the illusion is greater than the actuality (basically, anyone who came last year can probably imagine what's in store).

I thought it might be to do with how much room there is for seated people. Could people not line the walls and stand like statues for the entire playing period?
