COLIN 2010 games

Post by Howard Somerset »

99 games were played at COLIN 2010 yesterday. There's space in this thread for recaps of every one of them. Wonder how many we'll end up getting.

I'll get proceedings under way with my game against Matt Bayfield. I had heard that Matt was playing well so I knew I had to be on top form to beat him. This was my 5th game of the day.

Score: 21–13 (max 21)

Ryan awarded me a COLIN pencil for my 8. In fact it would have got an apterous pencil too :P

Round 4: 50, 3, 6, 7, 10, 8. Target: 180.

A bit of a risk from both of us, although I went with a word I'm sure I saw in a review recently on Apterous. Turns out I chose the right risky word over that and MUSKING^.

Round 9: O N E I R I C J G

C1 buzzes on 1 second to say REJOICING which is correct.
Score: 72–29 (max 72)

My one and only max game for COLIN 2010. The scoreline doesn't really reflect Matts ability and he made a couple of great spots against Ryan.

C2: BLEARS (6)
OT: AEROBES (7) AEROSOL (7) ROSEOLA (7) AREOLES (7) BOLEROS (7) SOLEBAR (7)
Score: 0–14 (max 15)

Cracking spot from Martin and extremely unlucky. I had ROSEOLA but chose not to risk after Martin declared 8.

Round 3: M T D P O A E P D

C1: POMADED (7)
C2: MAPPED (6)
OT: ADOPTED (7)
Score: 7–14 (max 22)

Time to kick myself as I had POMADED written down but convinced myself it was only a noun. Doesn't excuse missing ADOPTED though. I am going to blame this one on what I can only assume was Sue Sanders doing an extremely loud impression of the Countdown clock midround :x

Round 4: 75, 25, 3, 8, 5, 1. Target: 691.

C1: 690. (7)
C2: -
Score: 14–14 (max 29)

Just about the least deserved draw ever for me at the halfway stage...

Round 7: F S V E O A Q J N

C1: VANES (5)
C2: foveas
Score: 25–26 (max 46)

Kind of knew this wouldn't be good, but my better judgement was clouded by thoughts of opening a 12 point gap.

Round 8: 100, 6, 6, 2, 10, 5. Target: 912.

C1: 912. (10)
C2: 912. (10)

Round 9: S S S N I C K E L

C1 buzzes on 2 seconds to say SLICKNESS which is correct.
Score: 45–36 (max 66)

And there it is, my COLIN hopes well and truly buggered by a poor performance in a scrappy game. Pretty gutted about this one as I otherwise played pretty well. I'll post the rest of my games when time permits.

Yeah, Doddy got this from DC, I couldn't be bothered typing in the numbers solutions and thought it would get auto-solved by the recap writer.

I wrote down all of my own games (including opponents' declarations). Could someone in the know, please say if it's possible (and tell me how!) to upload the games from the recap writer onto the CoLin wiki page, so I don't have to duplicate later.

Merely a magician.

On to game 6, versus David, still unbeaten on 4 wins. If David lost noone would finish on 6, so I knew a high scoring win would still leave me a shot at the championship.

Here's game 1. I didn't know anything about Lee (and I'd like to take a moment to apologise for repeatedly calling him Nick), but had just seen him make some fine spots only to get pipped on a crucial by Jim, so I was wary of his ability.

TBH I didn't write the letters down here and all I remember is getting BILE. They were of a similar evilness to the ones above though. Edited to say I think they're right now. There were definitely five vowels and I remember going for a final U for JUBILEE, so they're at least close. And one final edit to add the maxes.

Game 3 was vs Rich. Unfortunately I've lost my record of this one. Highlights for me were GLISSADE and BORGATA, lowlights getting reenact disallowed and mucking up a doable numbers game.

So, onto game 4 vs Jack Hurst. I'd seen Jack put in some top quality performances on apterous and he also came up with a ridiculously good 15 second hypernumbers solution in the earlier exhibition game, so I knew I was in for a tough battle

Countdown recap for CoLin 2010.

C1: Howard Somerset.
C2: Stewart Gordon.
Host: David O'Donnell.
OT: Other words or solutions.

This is the opening game on table 6, pitting Series 56 quarter-finalist, Stewart Gordon, against Howard Somerset, whose record to date is consitently alternating between 1 win and 2 wins at various Co-events. If the pattern continues, it'll be two wins today.
One other point of note is that we've played each other at some stage in every Co-event that I've attended. Our record to date is 4 wins for Stewart, and 1 win for me.
Making his first appearance at a Co-event, and hosting this game, is Series 58 champion, David O'Donnell.

I felt a little guilty taking the points for this conundrum, after Stewart got so close. I said, and I think I said so honestly, that I wouldn't have taken them had the result of the game depended on the conundrum.

So Stewart starts off with one win to his credit, and in our personal battle, it's now 5-1 to Stewart, meaning that I wont draw level until CoLin 2012 at the very earliest.

C1: PLAIDS (6)
C2: MISDIAL (7)
OT: DUALISM (7) MISLAID (7) PLASMID (7)
Score: 36–28 (max 51)

Quite pleased with this round, although I nearly blew it, having written down MISDIALS, and only realised that there was only one S just in time.

With David's numbers round coming up, and remembering how hot he is on the Motown selection, I deliberately wrote 100, 75, 50, 25 on my pad, and showed it to David, in the hope that I'd be able to make him change his mind and go for any other selection. But he would have none of it, and so we got a four tops selection once again.

Round 8: 25, 50, 100, 75, 2, 5. Target: 426.

C1: 426. 5 x 100 - 75 + 2 / (50 / 25) (10)
C2: 426. 5 x 100 - 75 + 2 / (50 / 25) (10)
Score: 46–38 (max 61)

Fortunately it was doable reasonably easily, and although I'd actually made a minor mistake when writing it down, David was generous enough to let me have it, because it was obvious what my intentions were. If only Apterous was so generous.

Had David realised that this would have meant a crucial conundrum, I doubt that he'd have been quite so generous.

Round 9: E L A S T I Z E S

No one buzzes. The answer was SLEAZIEST.
Score: 46–38 (max 71)

But neither of us got is, so David took his first win at a Co-event.
Had we been give a final five-second countdown in this round, I'd have buzzed on 29 seconds, purely to wind David up.

Round 1: L T T E E E A T O

C1: inate
C2: OLEATE (6)
OT: TEETOTAL (8)
Score: 0–6 (max 8)

Stewart imagined an I in the selection, and David got a magnificent 6. Not surprisingly, he didn't get the available 8, probably never having heard of the word.

Round 2: D M V O O A E C T

C1: OCTAVE (6)
C2: COATED (6)
OT: DOVECOT (7)
Score: 6–12 (max 15)

Round 3: B S P E A A E R I

C1: ASPIRE (6)
C2: SPIRAEA (7)
OT: AIRBASE (7)

Another great word from David, puts him into a comfortable lead.

Round 4: 75, 100, 50, 25, 3, 8. Target: 194.

C1: 194. 25 x 8 - 3 x 100 / 50 (10)
C2: 194. (100 x 50 - 75) / 25 - 3 (10)
Score: 16–29 (max 32)

And once again, David's Motown selection is one which is solved by both players.

Round 5: T T R I U E R I S

Round 6: L R H O E E A F D

C1: GIANTESS (8)
C2: GENISTAS (8)
OT: EASTINGS (8) SANITISE (8) SATINISE (8)
Score: 32–53 (max 56)

Nice words from both players, but it means that David now cannot be caught.

Round 8: 75, 5, 2, 6, 4, 3. Target: 135.

C1: 135. 6 x 5 x 2 + 75 (10)
C2: 135. (75 - 6) x 2 - 3 (10)
Score: 42–63 (max 66)

Round 9: D I R R R H I E A

C2 buzzes on 5 seconds to say HAIRDRIER which is correct.
Score: 42–73 (max 76)

A good win for David puts him at 2 out of 2 for the first section of the competition, with Stewart on 1 out of 2.

One of the nicer scrambles I saw on the day that. By the way, in the previous game, HEGIRAS would have been OK in one of the rounds. Not sure why your recap didn't pick it up?

I don't think it'll be often that I get a chance to put one over on a Countdown champion, so this is probably my best game from COLIN 2010. It was the first game of the day for both Mark and I (COLIN1007).

Note: in the recap below, I may have got the Conundrum scramble and some of the letters game scrambles in slightly the wrong order, but apart from that, this is how Mark and I opened our COLIN 2010 accounts.

Countdown recap for Saturday 30 January 2010.

C1: Challenger Mark Tournoff.
C2: Challenger Matt Bayfield.
DC: Adam Dexter.
OT: Other words or solutions.

Score: 21–28 (max 29)

There are a few relatively simple ways to get 1 away, but Mark misses all of these, presumably by trying too hard to solve this impossible numbers game exactly.

C1: PREFACE (7)
C2: PREFACE (7)
Score: 42–49 (max 50)

As soon as PREFACE appeared from the first 7 letters, I elected to "spoil" the selection by picking two more vowels, hoping that this would not produce an 8 and ensuring that at the very worst, I would go into the conundrum still with a chance of winning.

Round 8: 7, 10, 100, 75, 50, 25. Target: 991.

C2: 991. (100*10)-(50/25)-7 (10)

Mark is unlucky as his choice of 4 large throws up an easy target, leaving me ahead as we enter a crucial conundrum.

Round 9: R A B C E N Y R R

C2 buzzes on 8 seconds to say CRANBERRY which is correct.
Score: 52–69 (max 70)

One point off the max in my debut COLIN game! Apologies to Mark for singling this one out, but I was quite pleased. You can guarantee I won't forget RITENUTI in future!

Strange. I used recap writer, and the output is what I posted.
Just tried that same selection again, and this time it came up with HEGIRAS.

But now I've sorted out what happened. Tried it yet again, this time with the 9 round option, and HEGIRAS was omitted. So recap writer must use an old dictionary when doing 9-round games.

Very close game, Lesley, well played.

P.S. I managed to upload this game to game 89 first by mistake. I did then put it in the right place, and deleted the rounds in game 89, but game 89 still has the wrong header of game 90. Please would someone delete this if they know how too. I was too busy writing down the games I hosted on the official forms to hand in, so haven't got a record of game 89 myself.
P.P.S. Thanks to whoever sorted my wiki mistake for me! :)

I've now editted that recap, to give HEGIRAS, and checked the rest of mine against the 15-round recap writer. One other round produced a word not thrown up by the 9-round version. In round 1 of my game against David, BREWSKI was there for 7, and that recap has also now been edited.
