COLIN XV & Hangover results

Post by Ben Wilson »

Another year has passed, I've sweated buckets of nervous sweat and COLIN has been and gone. 51 people played on Saturday and 33 on Sunday, amazing numbers for a city in the middle of nowhere on a cold weekend in January.

At the main event, prizes were given out in the form of t-shirts with amusing slogans on the front. The first of these went to the player who scored the points total closest to a 250+a random number chosen randomly by my mother. She chose 87, so the total to aim for was 337, and the closest was CALLUM PICKERING on 339. Pity he left before finding out he won his t-shirt. If you're reading this Callum, let me know your address and preferred size and I'll get it posted off to you.

The Tuff Luck prize went to HAZEL DRURY, who had 3 losses on the day where the margin was a combined total of 15 points (0, 5 and 10 (the zero was on a tie-break conundrum)). The two overachievers on the day were ZUBAIR PATEL and GEVIN CHAPWELL who both beat their predicted finishing position by over 20 places.

Badges were also on offer. Sadly not the revenge badges, which everyone asked about, thanks to me forgetting to order more of them. However the 'around the world' badges were on offer to everyone scoring over 360 points on the day, the max game badges went to our top 2 and conundrum god went to four people who I can't remember right now. The top two on the day were the unbeaten BRADLEY HORROCKS and JACK WORSLEY, and neither player unscrambled HARDOTTER, giving Jack back-to-back COLIN titles and equalling Chris Wills's record of 3 wins!

STANDINGS (before final) (with thanks to Graeme Cole for lending me his laptop on the day and retrieving the results for me after my IT 'solutions' predictably failed)

Players are ranked by wins, then points.

Final
Jack Worsley 63 - 49 Bradley Horrocks

Onto the hangover. For the sixth year in a row, many of Saturday's players braved the cold (and their alcohol consumption) again to play on the Sunday.

Once again, I did a team prize, and this year it was the BLUE TEAM who won 22-14 (after scores were 11-11 at half time). The overachiever (with seedings as always based on finishing positions in the main event) was RICHARD PRIEST, finishing 6th from a seeding of 24th. Max game badges went to ZARTE SIEMPRE, GRAEME COLE, THOMAS CAREY & JACK WORSLEY. 3 of the first 4 games to finish were maxes!

The top 5 all got t-shirts (and trophies for the top 3, who already had t-shirts, and half-price entry into the COLIN XVI weekend if they didn't already have it free). The final was between DYLAN TAYLOR and JEN STEADMAN, and with scores dead level going into the conundrum, it was Dylan who unscrambled BCRIKIANS to regain the title he first won 5 years ago.

Many thanks to Ben for putting together COLIN weekend again. The event runs so well that it's easy to forget what a huge amount of work goes into it behind the scenes to make it like that.

Incidentally, if any of you tried the Noughtword puzzle in the puzzle magazine, and would prefer a version with letter counts for the answers and a slightly different gimmick, this is the version I thought would end up in the magazine. Some of you managed to complete it anyway so perhaps the letter counts make it too easy? Anyway, the answers and the grid are exactly the same as in the printed version - the only difference is the clues.

Just to echo what Graeme said, major thanks to Ben for organising (and as ever to Jill for helping out). The event ran like a dream, and I'm sure a lot of preparation goes into making that happen, so serious thanks to Ben for his hard work and dedication, it really is appreciated. I'd also like to thank everybody that took part for creating such a great atmosphere on the day, everyone was lovely; it's really nice to see Countdown bring such a large and disparate bunch of people together and have them all get along so well (sorry that sentence is a bit garbled but you know what I mean). Plus, I can't remember the last time I enjoyed the actual games so much, so a big thanks to all my opponents on the day for making playing so much fun.

Of course, it's the drinking and the pool and the darts and the general congeniality of the after-event pub that makes COLIN so much of an event, and it was fantastic this year. I was flagging a bit on the Saturday night but am so glad that I stayed on until the end, as it was one of the most enjoyable nights I've had in ages. Mark and I were such an incredible team at pool that we basically just lost count of how many games we'd won in a row (it was loads) and it probably could have gone on forever if I hadn't fucked it up (not deliberately of course, but I think the amount I'd drank finally overwhelmed my ability to cue in a straight line).

Really glad I came along this year, I've been in a bit of a rut for a while and I just kind of needed something like that. Cheers everyone!
