As this is what happens on apto hopefully there won't be any controversy and I won't have to give Michelle free entry again.

No, I think I've just remembered what happened. Rubbish writing on my paper.

He actually said GENESSING, rather than CENESSING.

He had 30+ seconds to come up with a guess, and didn't even get the right letters? Ryan's gone down in my estimation somewhat.

For round 1, I was placed on table 9 (after the farce of having to redraw) with Matty Artell and Matt Morrison's beard.

Round 1: N E O A R D P O T

Matty: PRONATED (8)
Jack: PRONATED (8)
DC: patrooned

Score: 8–8 (max 8)

Round 2: N N G D O O I E H

Matty: HOODING (7)
Jack: HOODING (7)
DC: HOONING (7)
OT: IONOGEN (7) ONIONED (7)
Score: 15–15 (max 15)

Round 3: M L T O A A A Z R

Matty: AMORAL (6)
Jack: MORTAL (6)
DC: amortal
OT: AMATOL (6) MATRAL (6) RATAMA (6) TARAMA (6) ZAATAR (6)
Score: 21–21 (max 21)

I thought there was bound to be a longer word there and AMORTAL^ looked tempting with the new abomination of a dictionary update but six was the max.

Round 4: 50, 100, 75, 25, 7, 1. Target: 591.

Matty: 593. (75 - 1) x 7 + 100 - 25 (7)
Jack: 593. (100 - 1) x 7 - 75 - 25 (7)
OT: 591. (75 + 100 / 50) x (7 + 1) - 25 (10)
Score: 28–28 (max 31)

No max game to kick things off as we're both stuck on two away. I found the solution about two or three hours later and although not obvious, it was gettable.

Round 5: S V D R I E I E T

Matty: REVISITED (18)
Jack: REVISITED (18)
Score: 46–46 (max 49)

Nice to see a nine crop up so early in the day to boost the scores but still no breakthrough for either of us.

Round 6: R R T O I E E L F

Matty: refilter
Jack: LOITERER (8)
DC: filterer
Score: 46–54 (max 57)

Until now, that is. Matty's unlucky to offer just about the only RE- word that has not made it into the new update.

Round 7: S B N L E U E O G

Matty: unglobes
Jack: BLUENOSE (8)
OT: ENGLOBES (8) NEBULOSE (8)
Score: 46–62 (max 65)

Matty gets unlucky again. This time, he manages to find just about the only UN- word that has not made it into the new update.

Round 8: 25, 2, 5, 6, 6, 10. Target: 648.

Matty: 648. (6 x 5 - (10 - 6)) x 25 - 2 (10)
Jack: 648. (25 - 5 - 2) x 6 x 6 (10)
Score: 56–72 (max 75)

Round 9: A U T H E B T I A

Jack buzzes on 2 seconds to say HABITUATE which is correct.
Score: 56–82 (max 85)

In the end, the score makes it look a little more comfortable than it was. Matty proved to be a very capable opponent and was unlucky not to at least force a crucial.

OT: ALKANES (7) NESPOLA (7) OPANKAS (7) PAESANO (7) PALONES (7) PANELAS (7) PASKOLA (7)
Score: 20–6 (max 20)

Seven is the max here and there are eight to choose from. Five of those eight are new! :o I decide to stick with the tried and trusted NOPALES to pull further clear.

Round 4: 25, 10, 3, 2, 9, 3. Target: 864.

Jack: 864. (10 x 3 + 2) x 3 x 9 (10)
Matt: 864. ((9 + 2) x 25 + 10 + 3) x 3 (10)
Score: 30–16 (max 30)

Jack: NAIADES (7)
Matt: aeniads
Spectator Deeks: IXNAYED (7)
OT: NAYSAID (7) YANDIES (7)
Score: 37–16 (max 37)

Matt was probably thinking of the Latin poem The Aenid here, which wouldn't have been allowed anyway, even with this dictionary.

Round 6: L W S T E O A N B

Jack: BESTOWAL (8)
Matt: NOTABLES (8)
OT: NEOBLAST (8)
Score: 45–24 (max 45)

Round 7: S B T E O E S A L

Jack: BOATLESS (8)
Matt: beatless
Score: 53–24 (max 53)

It was only a matter of time before the ugly ODO update did some damage, though not too much in the context of this game. Matt's risky eight forces me to risk an eight of my own. His isn't in but mine is, despite the fact that BEATLESS sounds more plausible. As I say with the new dictionary, if in doubt, go for the most stupid one.

Round 8: 50, 10, 4, 8, 8, 1. Target: 413.

Jack: 413. 50 x 8 + 8 + 4 + 1 (10)
Matt: 413. 50 x 8 + 10 + 4 - 1 (10)
Score: 63–34 (max 63)

Round 9: I N V E R G I L E

Jack buzzes on 1.5 seconds to say RELIEVING which is correct.
Score: 73–34 (max 73)

Matt was only fractionally behind me here but I finish round 1 with a healthy two wins and 155 points. Time to take a break from playing.

Round 3: Y S W O E E L R T

Matt: WESTERLY (8)
Matty: towelers
Score: 19–11 (max 21)

A great spot by Matt to take the lead, while Matty's attempt is too silly to have made it into the dictionary before the update, but not stupid enough to make it into the update.

Round 4: 75, 50, 25, 8, 8, 10. Target: 219.

Matt: 218. 25 x 8 + 10 + 8 (7)

Neither of them need mentoring in this round, as the second nine of the day appears.

Round 8: 50, 4, 7, 2, 10, 8. Target: 857.

Matt: 857. (50 - 2) x (10 + 8) - 7 (10)
Matty: 856.
Score: 67–42 (max 73)

Matty puts his pen down very early on, only to realise later that he'd made a mistake and it's game over. Good solve by Matt.

Round 9: E X P L A I N O G

Matty buzzes on 1.9 seconds to say POLEAXING which is correct.
Score: 67–52 (max 83)

Matty claws back some pride, too little, too late.

My “reward” for my performance in the opening round was to share a table with Zarte and Conor. Doesn't get any easier, does it?

A good solution by Zarte, who strikes the first blow.

Round 5: A N S I H I T R O

Score: 29–39 (max 47)

Round 6: L P R A E I T E C

Conor: REPLICATE (18)
Zarte: REPLICATE (18)
Score: 47–57 (max 65)

Both players replicate the feat to increase the scores even further. More excitingly, though, they both win the box of FLAKES that Ben desperately tried but failed to give away at CONOT. If another nine turns up here, will Ben give away two ambulances?

Round 7: I B R E N O M L E

Conor: EMBROIL (7)
Zarte: BROMINE (7)
DC: boilermen
OT: MERLION (7) NIMBLER (7) NOMBRIL (7)
Score: 54–64 (max 72)

Sadly, we'll never know. I can't remember who suggested BOILERMEN^ but it sounded plausible with the new update. It's not in yet but if anyone working for the ODO is reading this, this example should be sufficient to get it into the dictionary one day.

Round 8: 50, 6, 7, 2, 9, 7. Target: 509.

Conor: 509. (6 - 7 / 7) x 2 x 50 + 9 (10)
Zarte: 509. (50 + 7) x 9 - 6 + 2 (10)
Score: 64–74 (max 82)

A comfortable numbers game leaves us with a semi-crucial conundrum.

Round 9: A M B I E N T I S

Zarte buzzes on 17 seconds to say MINIBEAST which is correct.
Score: 64–84 (max 92)

I was expecting the conundrum to be solved much sooner than it was but Zarte eventually ends the agony and seals his third win of the day.

We both buzzed at pretty much the same time here, making the final score a very harsh reflection of the game.

My challenge for round 3 was to be the other two players on four wins; Andy Platt and Rob Foster.
