CODUB Recaps

Post by James Robinson »

Well, the first ever Irish CO-event was a huge success, although by winning it, I'm bound to say that, I guess. :P

Just so you all know, there were 3 heats before the final stages. Random draws for all games, and no ODO used in this either. Every game was a 15 rounder too.

Here we go, enjoy. ;) :) :D

I might have an 8, but a lead of 20 isn't a guaranteed passage through to the next round yet....

Round 14: 3, 4, 2, 1, 6, 8. Target: 499.

Mark: 490. (3 + 4) x (6 + 1) x (8 + 2) (5)
James: 496. Mistake in working.
OT: 500. ((8 x 3) + 1) x 2 x (6 + 4) (7)
Score: 86–101 (max 116)

But, luckily this numbers game is impossible, so my messing up combined with Mark only getting 9 away, sees me through to the semi-finals.

Round 1: S P D E I E L I L

James: ellipsed
Jack: SPILLED (7)
DC: LIPSLIDE (8)
Score: 0–7 (max 8)

I thought it was good, Jack thought it was good. Shows what we know. :P

Round 2: N K G U O E T D P

9 away either side. Definitely wasn't good for my nerves.

Round 4: T N C O A E D I D

James: CATENOID (8)
Jack: ACTIONED (8)
Score: 20–27 (max 30)

Round 5: H C T L A O O T A

James: cahoot
Jack: LATCH (5)
DC: ATTACH (6) CHALOT (6) COOLTH (6)
Score: 20–32 (max 36)

And I fall into the cahoot/CAHOOTS trap, and Jack is now a dozen points ahead......

Round 6: 75, 100, 25, 50, 10, 3. Target: 746.

James: 746. (75 x 10) - (100 / 25) (10)
Jack: -
Score: 30–32 (max 46)

But, I get a lucky break, as Jack completely messes up the numbers, bringing me right back in it.

Round 7: R S S R E I I I E

James: SERIES (6)
Jack: RISERS (6)
DC: IRISES (6) SIRREE (6)
Score: 36–38 (max 52)

Round 8: N S S E A E G L E

James: GLEANS (6)
Jack: AGELESS (7)
Score: 36–45 (max 59)

Jack regains the lead as he gets a 7 just after I declare 6, at which point I realise what the 7 is, so I fall further behind again....

Round 9: 6, 4, 6, 1, 3, 1. Target: 199.

James: 199. ((4 + 6 + 1) x 3 x 6) + 1 (10)
Jack: 199. ((((4 + 1) x 6) + 3) x 6) + 1 (10)

Round 10: M S O I R E E J L

James: LOERIES (7)
Jack: MORSEL (6)
Score: 53–55 (max 76)

A good darrenic 7 from myself gets me back into the game.

Round 11: M R T C T E A I U

James: MURICATE (8)
Jack: CATTIER (7)
DC: MICTURATE (18)
Score: 61–55 (max 94)

And I go into the lead for the first time, as Jack chickens MURICATE, and even worse for him, he told me he heard of MICTURATE, but just didn't see it, whereas I hadn't heard of it.

Round 12: M S L U A I A D I

James: DUALISM (7)
Jack: DUALISM (7)
DC: MISDIAL (7) MISLAID (7)
Score: 68–62 (max 101)

Round 13: M S L A A O N A P

James: NAPALMS (7)
Jack: PLASMA (6)
DC: PANAMAS (7) PLASMON (7)
Score: 75–62 (max 108)

And I now have a lead in double figures thanks to some NAPALMS.

Round 14: 25, 1, 2, 3, 4, 10. Target: 981.

James: 981. (((4 x 10) - 1) x 25) + (3 x 2) (10)
Jack: 981. Mistake in working.
Score: 85–62 (max 118)

The game is over thanks to my perfect solve, whereas Jack's method was all over the place for him, unfortunately. :(

Round 15: G I E N D A R C H

James buzzes on 7 seconds to say CHAGRINED which is correct.
Final Score: 95–62 (max 128)

Thankfully, a much simpler conundrum appears and I get a convincing win, which certainly didn't reflect the immense pressure I found myself under (or should I say, what I put myself under after ellipsed and cahoot. :P ). Jack was a formidable opponent and I eventually wore him down to book my place in the final.

My opponent would be Kevin McMahon, the Series 44 wonderkid, who beat Ed McCullagh and Jonathan Wynn in the quarters and semis, so no easy match.....

So, here we are at the piece de resistance of the day, and with a local lad in the final, it made it a very grand occasion.

Here I was draped in my Irish flag, against a brilliant whizzkid of the 9-round era representing Ireland.

Round 5: I I E T S N N E L

Score: 29–29 (max 39)

I was actually fishing for a T for INTESTINE, but even when the L came out, I thought I might have had a winner with SENTINEL, but Kevin showed why he got to the final. 8-)

Round 6: 25, 75, 1, 5, 4, 9. Target: 920.

James: 205. ((75 - 6) x 3) - (50 / 25) (10)
Kevin: 204.
Score: 102–74 (max 112)

This numbers game was ridiculously hard for us, and it took me just about all the 30 seconds to solve it. But, the relief was there for me, as it meant I was THE CHAMPION OF CODUB :!: :!: :!: ;) :) :D  8-) :geek: :ugeek:

Round 15: C A N R U S S I A

No one buzzes. The answer was ANACRUSIS.
Final Score: 102–74 (max 122)

Well, that 30 seconds just came and went. Neither of us had a clue with that one. :P

So, there we are. 3 and a half years after my last CO-event win in Leicester, I'm now a CO-event champion for a 4th time. Chester 2011, Reading 2012, Leicester 2012 and now, Dublin 2015. I still can't believe it has happened, but it's a great feeling to be a champion, especially when I lifted the trophy above my head. :D :D :D

So, that's the CO-event calendar done for 2015. The 2016 calendar will start at the end of January with COLIN XII, which will also be the first event of the new national tournament, FOCAL. :geek: :ugeek:

Thanks again and bye for now. ;) :) :D  8-)
