CoNot IV Recaps

Post by Jack Worsley » Wed Jul 29, 2015 2:11 am

After a great Nottingham tournament, I think it's time to share some recaps. As usual, I have made notes for my own games (excluding the final). I normally make notes for games I host but I found that the new five to a table system made it a bit difficult, with so much going on.

So in round 1, I was drawn to face Graeme, Richard, Chris and Dave. Graeme bravely offered to host first and Richard was to be my first opponent. We had only played once previously; at Leicester in 2012, which happened to be the semi-final. Richard won to make it to the grand final, before losing against Robbo. Of course, revenge was not on my mind.

Score: 9–15 (max 15)

Some awfuls letters rounds to start with, surely the selections can only improve from here.

Richard: 422. 75 x 6 - 25 - 3 (7)

OT: 421. (75 + 100 / 25) x 6 - 50 - 3 (10)

A testing first numbers game and no one can see past the obvious one away.

Richard buzzes on 7 seconds to say SNAKEHEAD which is correct.
Score: 50–53 (max 66)

I had a feeling I was wrong as soon as I buzzed but I couldn't change my mind. Richard eventually gets it to leave him seriously regretting not going for OUTSITS. Now for a tough test against a familiar opponent in Graeme.

Round 1: L K H D E O A C B

Jack: BLOCKHEAD (18)
Graeme: BLOCKHEAD (18)
DC: HEADLOCK (8)
Score: 18–18 (max 18)

Some dubious shuffling sees HEADLOCK make a swift reappearance but this time there's a nine. I wasn't sure if it was BLOCKHEAD or HEADBLOCK but luckily I picked the right one, as did the other three players on the table.

Round 2: T T S I O E S E G

Jack: EGOTISTS (8)
Graeme: EGOTISTS (8)
Score: 26–26 (max 26)

A final N would have given us all a shot of the flake prize (see if you can spot it) but sadly it wasn't to be.

Round 3: C B N A A U D I L

Jack: DULCIANA (8)
Graeme: UNCIAL (6)
Score: 34–26 (max 34)

Jack: hunked
Graeme: HAZED (5)
DC: NAKED (5)
OT: KAHUNA (6) KHANDA (6)
Score: 56–53 (max 62)

I was right to be doubtful about HUNKED^ but I really wanted to seal the game before the conundrum. One more chance to do so with my choice of numbers.

Round 8: 50, 100, 75, 25, 10, 8. Target: 587.

Jack: 587. 75 x 8 - 25 + 10 + 100 / 50 (10)
Graeme: 587. (50 + 8) x 10 + (100 + 75) / 25 (10)
Score: 66–63 (max 72)

Not to be, with us both getting there via different routes. First crucial of the day for me.

Round 9: A R E M A C A D S

Jack buzzes on 2 seconds to say MASCARAED which is correct.
Score: 76–63 (max 82)

I used to always go for MASCARADE^ but thankfully not anymore. A high-scoring game boosts our scores and sees Graeme win the prize for the highest losing score of the first round. Up next for me was Dave.

Score: 49–24 (max 50)

Graeme's amusing suggestion (inspired by what he thought of this selection) is actually close to the real max.

Round 8: 25, 10, 4, 2, 9, 1. Target: 346.

Jack: 346. (10 + 4) x 25 - (9 - 1) / 2 (10)

Score: 69–34 (max 70)

Another conundrum where I have to think about the answer but again I choose the right one. Can I make it a perfect first round against Chris?

DC: NEURON (6)
Score: 4–11 (max 11)

I was hoping for EUROZONE (actually valid with a small E) but I still managed to take the lead anyway.

Round 3: I E A S X V D H O

Chris: SHAVED (6)
Jack: OXIDASE (7)
Score: 4–18 (max 18)

Jack: 488.
Score: 14–18 (max 28)

My most embarrassing moment of the day (excluding the football). I got as far as 8x6x10+9 but somehow concluded that it was impossible to make a 10 from two 5's and an 8. The fact that Graeme also missed it was some sort of consolation but unfortunately, I wasn't playing him and Chris got it.

Four wins out of four for me with a mixed set of scores. It was then my turn to host, before being placed on a table with Dylan, Zarte, Jen and Mike for round 2.

So, here are the recaps from my games at CoNot. 8-) 8-) 8-)

Score: 14–14 (max 21)

An unexpected gift for me here, as Dylan amazingly misses both maxes and has his word disallowed instead.

Round 4: 75, 8, 10, 9, 3, 7. Target: 805.

Dylan: 805. 75 x 10 + 9 x 7 - 8 (10)

I take the lead for the first time as Dylan has another word disallowed. LORNER is fine but it's the comparative relating to the adjective LORN, so you can't put the S on.

Score: 31–37 (max 50)

FINEABLE needs both E's, so the scores remain at a stand still here. Only Zarte was wise enough not to go for it.

Round 8: 4, 6, 7, 8, 10, 9. Target: 931.

Dylan: 931. ((10 + 6) x 8 - 9 + 4) x 7 (10)
Jack: 931. ((7 + 4) x 8 + 6) x 10 - 9 (10)
Score: 41–47 (max 60)

Not the easiest of six smalls but we get there via differing routes. Now to face Dylan on a crucial conundrum, the joy!

Round 9: S H A M P O O T K

Dylan buzzes on 1.5 seconds to say PHOTOMASK which is correct.
Score: 51–47 (max 70)

My worst fears are realised as Dylan rapidly turns defeat into victory. He admitted that he nearly went for HOOKSTAMP^ but he made the right choice. Not the start to the second phase I wanted and I would now realistically need to win my next three to keep my final dreams alive. Next up was Zarte, which was our first long overdue encounter at a co-event.

Jack: GRID (4)
Jen: MAID (4)
DC: RIGID (5)
OT: DIRAM (5) MIRID (5) RADII (5)
Score: 4–4 (max 5)

A disappointing start by both of us as we miss a couple of gettable fives.

Round 2: L R N S E A E N R

Jack: LEARNERS (8)
Jen: LEARNERS (8)
DC: RELEARNS (8) ensnarler ensnarer
Score: 12–12 (max 13)

Round 3: I E A E B P B M H

Jack: BEAM (4)
Jen: BEAM (4)
OT: BIMAH (5)
Score: 16–16 (max 18)

Another poor selection and all four players declare the same four. Kudos to anyone who gets the max without looking at the answer.

Round 4: 50, 25, 6, 9, 2, 4. Target: 895.

Jack: 895. (50 + 25) x 6 x 2 - (9 - 4) (10)
Jen: 895. (50 + 25) x 6 x 2 - (9 - 4) (10)

Round 5: N N T I U A E N P

Jack: PENNANT (7)
Jen: PINNATE (7)
DC: PETUNIA (7)
Score: 33–33 (max 35)

Mike offered PENNANT from a very similar selection in the previous game, so I thought I'd mention it again here.

Jack: ASSERTED (8)
Jen: STARVES (7)
DC: STARVED (7) destarves
OT: DEARESTS (8)
Score: 41–33 (max 43)

Jen surprisingly fails to spot either eight, so I give myself a slight advantage.

Round 7: D L S N U U I I E

Jack: UNDIES (6)
Jen: UNDIES (6)
DC: INSIDE (6)
OT: INDIES (6) INDUES (6) NUDIES (6) SILENI (6) UNUSED (6)

This round was pants!

Round 8: 25, 100, 75, 50, 7, 9. Target: 783.

Jack: 784. 100 x 7 + 75 + 9 (7)

OT: 783. ((100 - 7) x 50 / 75 + 25) x 9 (10)
Score: 54–46 (max 59)

A very nasty four large (99% difficulty rating on crosswordtools) appears and everyone gets the obvious one away. Crucial conundrum time again.

Round 9: P A S O P L I E L

Jack buzzes on 2 seconds to say PAPILLOSE which is correct.
Score: 64–46 (max 69)

A vital win for me which keeps my final dreams very much alive.

Round 7: A E P T R G F U K

Mike: UPRATE (6)

OT: ARGUTE (6) PARGET (6)
Score: 48–48 (max 48)

Round 8: 50, 25, 7, 10, 4, 3. Target: 191.

Mike: 190.
Jack: 191. (50 - 3) x 4 + 10 - 7 (10)
Score: 48–58 (max 58)

I have an unexpected lead to take into the conundrum as Mike surprisingly only manages one away. If I win the game, I make it to the final and a few people crowd round the table, before eerie silence follows.

Round 9: A K T U A T I O N

Jack buzzes on 9 seconds to say TAIKONAUT which is correct.
Score: 48–68 (max 68)

A tense nine seconds pass and eventually I get there. That's it for my recaps and I can't not mention how great the day was. Winning the tournament was a nice bonus but thanks to Ben for another top drawer event, as well as all of my opponents on the day!

I thought the five to a table idea was interesting to say the least. It gave people more games which was certainly a good thing but there was a lot to do. I prefer Lincoln style but this was certainly worth testing.
