I've updated the rankings again. James Laverty has improved from 19:27 to 19:26 since the last update, and I've added Jack Worsley.

It's the Chelmsford marathon. Not exactly a big event, but I think it's a fast enough course, and I'm aiming for under 3 hours.
I got 3:09:16 in the end. It was going well for most of it, but the last three miles killed me. I was on for under 3 hours for more than 22 miles though. It was also very windy because of storm Brian. Still, I've got London to make up for it.

David Williams now added. Interestingly his age-graded score (76.22%) is higher than Oliver Garner's (75.59%). Although you can debate the relevance of these scores as much as you like.

And Birmingham was the final round of the championship. It was just me (and 511 other people) taking part, and the results are as follows, with points in brackets:

35. Gevin Chapwell - 19:31 (50)

35th is very low down for a time of 19:31, so it's a very competitive parkrun. I'm nowhere near PB form though, having had over three weeks off after the marathon (I went to Mexico and the US; it wasn't just slacking) and taking a while to get back to form. My PB time of 18:22 would have put me 9th, so there were a lot of people in the space of about a minute. Anyway, the final points table:

1. Gevin Chapwell - 405
2. Mike Springett - 110
3. Oliver Garner - 83.3
4. Stephen Read - 53.3
5. Conrad Teixeira - 50

8. Zubair Patel - 40
9. Giles Hutchings - 33.3
10. Suzy Turner - 25

So that makes me the inaugural CO:parkrun annual champion and the greatest runner of all time.

Re: CO:parkrun Recaps

COLIN was the first CO-event of the year, and with it we had the first CO-parkrun event. Five of us were in attendance, but Mike Springett fell and was unable to continue, so there was some discussion as to whether he should count as an entrant for scoring purposes. But in the end, we decided that he should be included - after all parkrun is an inclusive thing. It's all about taking part. Or something. The results are as follows:

12. Gevin Chapwell - 19:49 (83.3 points)
36. Giles Hutchings - 21:14 (66.7 points)
125. Zubair Patel - 24:56 (50 points)
173. Rose Boyle - 26:46 (33.3 points)
Mike Springett - DNF (16.7 points)

This was also a PB for Zubair, beating the previous 26:54 - an anagram of his new record. Rose has also escaped the PB list until now, so I'll do an update. Incidentally her PB of 25:46 is also an anagram of both Zubair's times.

So there you have it. We now have 30 people on the list. Zubair has shot up to number 24 in the standings, and Rose is a new entry at number 25. I couldn't find any other improvements.

Before Co:Bris, me and Tom Feilding both took part in the Ashton Court parkrun, with Tom making his CO:parkrun debut. The results out of 427 runners:

15. Gevin Chapwell - 20:09 (66.7 points)
265. Tom Feilding - 29:43 (33.3 points)

It was a very difficult course actually. Basically up a hill for the first half and down a hill for the second half, and very windy to boot. On the way down, the limiting factor was as much that you felt you were going trip and go flying as it was anything to do with fitness. If I were to do it again, I'd push much harder on the way up and basically exhaust myself, and then take the ride down. I think it would be quicker overall. Anyway, the points table:

1. Gevin Chapwell - 150
2. Giles Hutchings - 66.7
3. Zubair Patel - 50
4. Rose Boyle - 33.3
4. Tom Feilding - 33.3
6. Mike Springett - 16.7

The top two on this list (me and Giles) are also both doing the London Marathon on 22nd April, so watch out for us there!

I've now updated the PB list to include Tom Feilding. His best time of 26:16 puts him 26th, just one second ahead of Stephen Read. Also, Giles Hutchings has taken 11 seconds off his PB in getting 20:08. He goes from being one second behind Adam Gillard to being one second behind Conrad Teixeira. If he can get ahead of Conrad, there's a bit of open space before James Laverty.

Branching out from the parkrun, me and Giles Hutchings both did the London Marathon yesterday:

Gevin Chapwell: 3:43:06
Giles Hutchings: 4:19:15

I think that was Giles's first marathon so automatically his PB. Tim Down and Matt Bayfield have also done marathons in the past, so I could get a PB list up:

1. Tim Down - 2:57:19
2. Gevin Chapwell - 3:09:16
3. Matt Bayfield - 3:09:22 (I think)
4. Giles Hutchings - 4:19:15

Apparently Jonathan Rawlinson did the London Marathon as well and absolutely smashed it in 2:58:36. So we have:

2. Jonathan Rawlinson - 2:58:36
3. Gevin Chapwell - 3:09:16
4. Matt Bayfield - 3:09:22

Don't think he's an Apterite, but I'd wager that Jonny Currie is the finest runner to have appeared on the show in recent years, and by quite a margin too. His parkrun PB of 16.33 (16.07 on a road 5k) is quite modest compared to his track PBs, which include 1:52.77 for 800, which isn't far off what you need to make the British Championships.

Pre-CO:LON, me, Oliver Garner, Giles Hutchings and Mike Springett all completed the Mile End parkrun. James Laverty was also there in a spectating capacity. It was probably the most competitive parkrun I've ever done. There were 385 runners, and the results were as follows:

13. Oliver Garner - 18:22 (80 points)
39. Gevin Chapwell - 19:16 (60 points)
71. Giles Hutchings - 20:52 (40 points)
150. Mike Springett - 23:45 (20 points)

And the points table:

1. Gevin Chapwell - 210
2. Giles Hutchings - 106.7
3. Oliver Garner - 80
4. Zubair Patel - 50
5. Mike Springett - 36.7

A few changes on this since I last updated it. Jonathan Rawlinson is getting ever closer to Oliver Garner with a new PB of 17:24 to beat his old time of 17:41. James Laverty has improved five seconds to go from 19:26 to 19:21 but stays 8th overall. Hopefully he'll be back running soon. And Giles Hutchings goes from 20:08 to 19:48, passing Conrad Teixeira in the process.

Before CO:Cam, there was the Cambridge parkrun. I was the only person to attend both, but Jonathan Rawlinson was also spotted at the parkrun! But as he didn't come to CO:Cam, he doesn't qualifying for the CO:parkrun competition. Out of 588 runners, the results:

16. Gevin Chapwell - 19:14 (50 points)

The overall points:
1. Gevin Chapwell - 260
2. Giles Hutchings - 106.7

Before .co.mk I did the Linford Wood parkrun (it was just me this time), which is the other Milton Keynes parkrun, since I've already done the actual Milton Keynes parkrun twice. And I finished first, which is the first time I've done that as a tourist! The results out of 219 runners:

1. Gevin Chapwell - 18:51 (50 points)

The overall points:

1. Gevin Chapwell - 310
2. Giles Hutchings - 106.7

Bournemouth saw just me doing the parkrun. The results out of 469 runners:

6. Gevin Chapwell - 18:30 (50 points)

That's actually my second fastest parkrun time (my PB being 18:22 at King's Lynn last year).

The overall points:

1. Gevin Chapwell - 360
2. Giles Hutchings - 106.7
3. Oliver Garner - 80
4. Zubair Patel - 50
5. Mike Springett - 36.7
6. Rose Boyle - 33.3
6. Tom Feilding - 33.3

Last year I was champion with 405 points. I'm probably only doing Birmingham in the rest of this year, but if only I do it, that would be 50 points bringing a new record yearly total of 410! But let's not get ahead of ourselves!

Actually I did this one too. Was so surprised to come first with a time of 16:30 I forgot to scan my barcode! I was only expecting around the 17 minute mark, but nevertheless was happy to beat my uncle George (21st place) on his debut.

That's funny because the winning time was recorded at 17:06. Also weird that I didn't see you in front of me in the early stages - I saw five people in front of me and none of them were you!

And as I'm sure you're aware, Jonathan Rawlinson did the Cambridge parkrun on CO:CAM weekend but received no points because he didn't come to the CO event. So unfortunately it's no points for you for several reasons.

When are we next doing a bet race?

I improved my overall PB from 18:22 to 18:16 at Maldon parkrun on Saturday. Not a massive improvement, but I think there are much faster courses than Maldon, and I'm now confident of finding one of these courses and going under 18 minutes without having to improve any further (although I will improve anyway). I also checked other people's PB's and Dave Nicholson and James Wilson have both improved, with Dave going up two places on the list and James one place. The new list is underneath.

Also, I noticed Mark Hartnett sharing a run on Facebook, so I decided to look him up on the parkrun site and found this. Is this you, Mark?

The final CO-event of the year was at Birmingham, and I (and no-one else relevant) did the Cannon Hill parkrun. I actually slipped over on their special non-stick surface in the rain and jogged round for most of it. With 707 runners in total, here are the results:

285. Gevin Chapwell - 25:15 (50 points)

And the final points table of the year:

1. Gevin Chapwell - 410
2. Giles Hutchings - 106.7
3. Oliver Garner - 80
4. Zubair Patel - 50
5. Mike Springett - 36.7
6. Rose Boyle - 33.3
6. Tom Feilding - 33.3

And that beats last year's record total of 405.

In other news, David Hilton has been added to the list with his time of 23:07. He's only done one parkrun and thinks he can challenge 20 minutes though, so it will be interesting to see that. Also, I've improved by one second since the last update, to 18:15 at the Hackney Marshes parkrun. I was on for about 18 minutes (possibly under) but I followed some guy the wrong way while the marshals weren't paying attention. Thanks guys.

At the first CO-event of the year, me and Mike Springett both took part in the Lincoln parkrun. Neither of us fell over. Results out of 477 runners:

15: Gevin Chapwell - 20:07 (67 points)
126: Mike Springett - 25:30 (33 points)

I can't be bothered to do a championship table because it's the same as above. And thank you very much to the legend that is Jim Bentley for giving us a lift there and back.

I've just been through the list again. First of all, welcome to Tom Chafer-Cook on this list. We also have improvements from Rose Boyle and Stephen Read who has managed to leapfrog over Tom Feilding. But perhaps most exciting of all is that Oliver Garner has improved his PB from 17:04 to 17:00, and is now agonisingly close to breaking 17 minutes! Surely it's going to happen soon.

There is a list of the parkrun courses by how fast they are according to the average "SSS" rating on runbritainrankings. The SSS rating of a course is its difficulty rating based on how fast people run compared to how fast they should run according to their previous runs on the runbritain site (not just parkruns).

Well, well, well. We have got some big changes in our list. Oliver Garner has made a massive improvement to his PB, going from 17:00 to 16:17, which surely puts him in an unassailable first place and the first runner under 17 minutes! But wait - what's that? New guy John Ashcroft has just strolled into this list with an absolutely ridiculous time of 15:15! He also holds the course records at both St Helens and Fell Foot Newby Bridge. And as a newby to this list, he'll be pretty pleased to be at the top spot. (Sorry.)

We also have an improvement from Rose Boyle, but not enough to stop Stephen Read from leapfrogging her with an even bigger improvement. Tom Chafer-Cook has also casually knocked about six minutes off his PB since the list was last updated.

Before CO:York this morning, Callum Todd was the only parkrunner to do the nearby Heslington parkrun - his debut parkrun! There were 384 runners in total, and the results are:

279. Callum Todd - 31:46 (50 points)

And so the championship table:

1. Gevin Chapwell - 67
2. Callum Todd - 50
3. Mike Springett - 33

Now I just need to update the overall ranking list. See you again in a few minutes!

I've done a new update to the list below. I've added Matthew Tassier and Callum Todd as intended. Then I saw the post from Fiona T above and looked at the CO:LON list and found that there was a Fiona Titcombe, so I've assumed that this is the correct person to add to the list! There are also improvements from Jon Elmer, Tom Chafer-Cook, Stephen Read and Jonathan Wynn. So this is a bumper edition of updates.

Intending to do https://www.parkrun.org.uk/southwark/ before CO:LON if anyone fancies joining me - need my Saturday parkrun fix!
Is your local run the Frimley Lodge parkrun? So do you know Jon Corby?

I was actually intending to do the Victoria Dock parkrun on the basis that it is not only fairly nearby but also supposedly the fastest course in the country. Would you consider doing that one instead?

I saw Jon was a Frimley-ite, but don't know him. The pic of him is quite old, so probably wouldn't recognise him.

I've got a parkrun friend from Glasgow who is doing all the Victorias, and she's coming down end of June for that one so will be doing it then. She's also persuading me I need to tackle the alphabet (trip to Zary parkrun in Poland!), so currently missing 'S' (along with most other letters) so Southwark works for me.

I think you should order your list by number of runs though! ;)

Any Countdowners doing the London Marathon this year? Obviously not running it myself due to a certain fitness issue, but spectating supporting friends so I'll keep an eye out.
Definitely not Jamie McNeill or Schrodinger's Cat....

Before CO:LON on Saturday, four of us took part in the Burgess parkrun. And here are the results out of 575 runners:

1. Oliver Garner - 16:59 (80 points)
12. Gevin Chapwell - 18:09 (PB) (60 points)
461. Callum Todd - 29:47 (PB) (40 points)
560. Fiona Titcombe - 39:41 (20 points)

So congratulations to Oliver on finishing first overall. Although he was unable to do the double and defend his CO:LON title.

The championship table:

1. Gevin Chapwell - 127
2. Callum Todd - 90
3. Oliver Garner - 80
4. Mike Springett - 33
5. Fiona Titcombe - 20

And with two of us getting a PB, it must be time to update the time ranking table!

I've finally got round to doing this. On 8th June before CO:Cam, me and Fiona Titcombe did the Coldham's Common parkrun (nearer to Cambridge than the Cambridge one). And the results out of 281 runners:

8. Gevin Chapwell - 19:07 (67 points)
245. Fiona Titcombe - 34:17 (33 points)

And the table:

1. Gevin Chapwell - 193
2. Callum Todd - 90
3. Oliver Garner - 80
4. Fiona Titcombe - 53
5. Mike Springett - 33

Also Rachel Perkins who competed at CO:Cam has done at least one parkrun, so I will add her to the PB list at some point.

By the way, this is a really good tool for finding the nearest parkrun to any particular place. I've done the closest 4 to my house but then the next nearest I've done is number 30 (and then also number 31).

We had a record attendance at the Linford Wood parkrun before .co.mk 5. Eight CO-event attendees took part. Lauren Hamer would have made nine but because she wasn't Countdowning afterwards, she wasn't eligible for points! And here are the results out of 240 runners:

4. Gevin Chapwell - 19:18 (89 points)
6. Tim Down - 19:29 (78 points)
63. David Hilton - 25:17 (67 points)
102. Jonathan Wynn - 28:50 (56 points)
108. Dave Ryan - 29:13 (44 points)
142. Callum Todd - 32:29 (33 points)
175. Fiona T - 35:16 (22 points)
180. Suzy Turner - 35:59 (11 points)
(176. Lauren Hamer - 35:18)

And the standings:

1. Gevin Chapwell (282.2 points)
2. Callum Todd (123.3 points)
3. Oliver Garner (80 points)
4. Tim Down (77.8 points)
5. David Hilton (66.7 points)
6. Jonathan Wynn (55.6 points)
7. Fiona T (52.2 points)
8. Dave Ryan (44.4 points)
9. Mike Springett (33.3 points)
10. Suzy Turner (11.1 points)

This year I've generally been giving the points as integers, but keeping the decimal places "in the background", but I've added the first decimal place above just so it's easier to keep track of for the next event. But I think for next year, I'm going to do away with decimals altogether. Instead of points being in a 0 to 100 range, they will be in a 0 to 1000 range with all scores rounded to the nearest integer.

Edit - Fiona should be on 75.6 points

I've done another update of the overall PB table. Matthew Tassier was the only person who'd improved his time since the last update, improving from 25:00 to 24:31, overtaking Dave Ryan and Stephen Read in the process. However, two new people have been added - Rachel Perkins, who has done a couple of recent CO-events, and Andy Noden, who was an octochamp in 2015.

Good question. The formula for the number of points you'd get is (1 - position / (runners +1)) * 100. Your position is your position among the Countdowners, and runners is the number of Countdowners running. So all non-Countdowners are irrelevant when considering your score.

To put it in simple terms, if there is one runner, they automatically score 50 points. If there are two, they get 66.7 and 33.3. If there are three, they get 75, 50 and 25. However many runners you get, their scores are spaced equally, with also an equal space between the top score and 100, and the bottom score and 0.

Next year, I will probably use the formula (1 - position / (runners +1)) * 1000 rounded to the nearest integer.

Before CO:Liverpool, Fiona Titcombe and Eddy Byrne both took part in the Birkenhead parkrun. So out of 541 runners, here are the results:

370. Eddy Byrne - 31:04 (67 points)
435. Fiona Titcombe - 33:51 (33 points)

Interestingly six Byrnes took part, including the runner immediately in front of Eddy.

And here are your current standings:

1. Gevin Chapwell (282.2 points)
2. Callum Todd (123.3 points)
3. Fiona Titcombe (85.6 points)
4. Oliver Garner (80 points)
5. Tim Down (77.8 points)
6. David Hilton (66.7 points)
=. Eddy Byrne (66.7 points)
8. Jonathan Wynn (55.6 points)
9. Dave Ryan (44.4 points)
10. Mike Springett (33.3 points)
11. Suzy Turner (11.1 points)

Eddy obviously also needs to be added to the PB list, which I will update shortly. This was his first parkrun!

Edit - Fiona should be on 108.9.

CoBra in Braintree happened on Saturday 2nd November, and three of the CO-event attendees took part in the Great Notley parkrun beforehand. Only 165 runners in total, but here are the results:

1. Gevin Chapwell - 19:36 (75 points)
138. Callum Todd - 35:00 (50 points)
139. Fiona T - 35:01 (25 points)

So an outright first place for me and a photo finish between Callum and Fiona!

The standings:

1. Gevin Chapwell (357.2 points)
2. Callum Todd (173.3 points)
3. Fiona T (110.6 points)
4. Oliver Garner (80 points)
5. Tim Down (77.8 points)
6. David Hilton (66.7 points)
=. Eddy Byrne (66.7 points)
8. Jonathan Wynn (55.6 points)
9. Dave Ryan (44.4 points)
10. Mike Springett (33.3 points)
11. Suzy Turner (11.1 points)

Noel Pereira who has run parkrun before didn't take part in this one, but was at the CO-event, so will be added to the PB list, along with Eddy Byrne and Gerry Tynan, who I read on Facebook has done a parkrun.

Edit - Fiona should be on 133.9.

Re: CO:parkrun Recaps

Post by Gavin Chipper »

The final CO-event of the year happened in Wolverhampton Saturday, and a whopping five of us did the wet Wolverhampton parkrun beforehand. Here are the results out of 321 runners:

7. Gevin Chapwell - 19:09
92. Jonathan Wynn - 26:24
256. Fiona T - 34:42

Er, I can't seem to find Callum or Bradley in the results, so I'll get back to you...
