The year starts on Christmas Day.

By the way, why is it then when I question why the AD/BC system should have Christmas Day on 1st January, why do most people not get what I'm talking about? Is everyone fucking stupid? Not only should people get what I'm talking about, they should all have already thought of it independently themselves.
Accoriding to parkrun, the year starts in October in Rushcliffe.....
Definitely not Jamie McNeill or Schrodinger's Cat....

Just noticed that Adam Gillard did a new year parkrun but was way off his PB despite a year to train for this one event!

Stalker much? :p

I have had a cough / cold so wasn't up for the Christmas Day parkrun, and I didn't feel that great still on Sunday so decided just to enjoy the run rather than chasing a PB. I had been training for it a few weeks ago and did a 3-mile training run in about 19:30 so I was confident of breaking the 20-minute barrier in race conditions but now it will have to wait until next year!

An asterisk with a footnote on the bottom of a leaderboard is rarely flattering !
I'm planning on taking part this year too which will make it my second ever parkrun. Going to come prepared this year though....I'll bring along my barcode which I've just printed off !

I'm out of this year's Parkrun at Lincoln btw. I can't remember the last time I did a Parkrun, or even ran more than 1km in the last 6 months or so. I also don't see the point in having to get up early on Saturday to run in the cold and then get back to the Little Chef and find out they've ran out of pancakes because everyone else has been to breakfast beforehand.

Really poor.

It's "run out of pancakes".

Seriously though, the parkrun isn't optional and I've never seen them run out of pancakes anyway. And after running, breakfast will be more enjoyable and satisfying.

Behave, Ryan. You talked me into it last year after I'd had less practice than you've had so only fair you tag along this time. Plus, you don't want to miss out on our favourite T-Rex impression do you ?

Four of us did the Lincoln parkrun at COLIN weekend. Here are the results (out of 364 runners):

12. Gevin Chapwell - 19:56
148. Mike Springett - 26:49
150. Zubair Patel - 26:54 (PB)
157. Stephen Read - 27:16

I think four runners is a CO-event record.

Right, I'm going to put up a ranking list of Countdown/Apterous parkrunners. I'll check it every so often to see if anyone's beaten their PB, and if anyone is really insistent that they don't want to be on the list, then I can remove their name. And if I've forgotten anyone, let me know and I can add them. This list is unlikely to be anywhere near exhaustive.

1. Oliver Garner - 17:22
2. Tim Down - 17:45
3. Matt Bayfield - 17:56
4. Gevin Chapwell - 18:31
5. Jonathan Rawlinson - 18:50
6. James Bradley - 19:04
7. Adam Gillard - 20:18
8. Giles Hutchings - 20:19
9. Tom Hargreaves - 20:20
10. Michael Springett - 20:36
11. Ryan Taylor - 20:39
12. Conrad Teixeira - 20:40
13. Dave Nicholson - 20:50
14. James Laverty - 21:05
15. Adam Curran - 21:14
16. Kirk Bevins - 21:58
=. Jon Corby - 21:58
18. Ian Volante - 22:01
19. Richard Brittain - 22:55
20. Jon O'Neill - 24:10
21. Lauren Hamer - 26:30
22. Stephen Read - 26:49
23. Zubair Patel - 26:54
Also, Jim Bentley hinted that he might be persuadable to do parkruns in the future, so Jim, sign up to parkrun!

Also there is one in the 95-99 category that is 48:18 (something I read suggested it was 99), and one in the 100-104 category that's 69:03. This is based on the times set by Fauja Singh on 31/3/2012 and 28/4/2012. According to the Wikipedia he would have been 100 for the first of these and 101 for the second, but there was no change in his 100% time.

Also, I might do a points league this year. Positions are based only on Countdowners (so we're 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th) and the points formula is (1-(position/(runners+1)))*100. So we have:

1. Gevin Chapwell - 80
2. Mike Springett - 60
3. Zubair Patel - 40
4. Stephen Read - 20

I'll try and keep track of all the CO-event parkruns over the year, including ones I don't go to.

I can't come to Manchester unfortunately as I'm doing a half marathon on the Sunday. But if anyone does a Manchester parkrun that weekend, it can count towards the points league. I don't think anyone did a Bristol parkrun.

Paul Talmey has been discovered to be a parkrunner, so he's now been added to the list. Also Stephen Read has improved his PB since the last update and overtaken Lauren Hamer!

Conrad Teixeira did the South Manchester parkrun yesterday before the CO event in Manchester:

66. Conrad Teixeira - 21:16

This gives him 50 points in the annual competition, so the leader board now looks like this:

1. Gevin Chapwell - 80
2. Mike Springett - 60
3. Conrad Teixeira - 50
4. Zubair Patel - 40
5. Stephen Read - 20

I did the Colchester half marathon this morning and got a nice new PB of 1:24:13 (beating my previous 1:24:50).

According to the Wikipedia article, a half marathon is 21.0975km, and if you do the maths, my time works out at slightly under 19:58 per parkrun! I'm very pleased with that.

Also I got a fly in my eye about 8 miles in, and it was very distracting, although I'm not sure it really affected my time. I was also put off a sprint finish because my calf muscles felt like they wanted to go into full spasm mode, so that cost a bit of time, but I don't think I would have gone under 1:24 anyway, which I had half an eye on* for most of the run.

*It would have been a whole eye, but there was a fly in the way.

You have very deep eyes.

Oh, and well done, that's a cracking time. I'm doing my second half-marathon this Sunday (first was 1:47:03 about 2 months back), not sure I'll even get in under that because I've been quite complacent about training since the last one.

Slacker.

That's a pretty decent time anyway. Maybe you could go for a 1:45 on Sunday.

It probably belongs in the 'Really obvious things that you've only just realised' thread, but there's all these people who run past where I live when I'm out for my run on a Saturday morning. They stand around in a car-park for a quarter of an hour, then they do exactly the same course every week no matter what the weather's like. It doesn't look like any sort of race, as only a handful of them are decent runners, and I just thought it was some fairly pointless local health initiative. It was only when I happened to look at the parkrun thread it dawned on me what was going on. And no, I've never done one, and I don't expect to break 45 minutes for 10K ever again.

I got a new PB at my local parkrun of 18:58 today, so I was very pleased with that. It's not my overall PB - that's 18:31 set at King's Lynn - but I set my King's Lynn time when I was running times in the 19:30s at my local parkrun. So a bit of extrapolation later, and you'll see that I'm aiming for sub 18 assuming I go to CO:KL this year (which I intend to do).

After three consecutive runs of 17:22, Oliver Garner has now put the record even further out of reach with a time of 17:04!

1. Oliver Garner - 17:04
2. Tim Down - 17:45
3. Matt Bayfield - 17:56
4. Gevin Chapwell - 18:31
5. Jonathan Rawlinson - 18:50

An update on the King's Lynn course length:
The course has been measured several times with recognised measuring wheel. There will be a shorter line if you cut all the corners off! But we do know that many garmin watches etc vary with their distance from week to week due to satellite reception amongst the trees.
I found this page, which seems to suggest that the King's Lynn course is accurate.

Cool. It won't be much use if it's the wrong size for my phone though. Maybe you should buy me a new, bigger phone as well.

Well, sometimes people report to me. A few weeks ago, I saw on James Laverty's Facebook page that he'd set a PB as well. But normally if I check one, I check them all.

Anyway, very well done, Jonathan. It's also nice to see that your fifth post in about five years is on this thread, proving its significance. You're now seven seconds ahead of me, but you're going to have to do better than that if you want to stay ahead! I've got two non-Great Notley parkruns coming up in May, including King's Lynn where I set my outright record last year, so there could be some PB potential there! Updated list below:

Conrad Teixeira did the South Manchester parkrun yesterday before the CO event in Manchester:

66. Conrad Teixeira - 21:16

This gives him 50 points in the annual competition, so the leader board now looks like this:

1. Gevin Chapwell - 80
2. Mike Springett - 60
3. Conrad Teixeira - 50
4. Zubair Patel - 40
5. Stephen Read - 20
Before CO:LON yesterday, we had a record (I think) five people doing the Highbury Fields parkrun beforehand. And out of 308 runners, here are the results with points in brackets:

2: Oliver Garner - 17:22 (83.3)
8. Gevin Chapwell - 18:31 (66.7)
39. James Laverty - 21:00 (50)
56. Giles Hutchings - 21:56 (33.3)
129. Mike Springett - 24:28 (16.7)

So congratulations to Oliver Garner for doing the double - winning CO:LON and winning out of the Countdowners at the parkrun.

That equals my overall PB at 18:31, but I actually timed it as 18:35. Oliver Garner also timed his as 17:26. Strange. It was a fairly awkward course though - five laps and a lot of "traffic", and a lot of running uphill and then downhill straight after. Here are the overall standings for the year so far:

1. Gevin Chapwell - 146.7
2. Oliver Garner - 83.3
3. Mike Springett - 76.7
4. Conrad Teixeira - 50
=. James Laverty - 50
6. Zubair Patel - 40
7. Giles Hutchings - 33.3
8. Stephen Read - 20

Things have just got a whole lot more competitive. As well as Jonathan Rawlinson further lowering his PB to 18:15, the appearance of Tim Springett (Mike's dad) at CO:LON makes him eligible for this list, and he goes straight in in 6th place with a time of 18:32!

Re: CO:parkrun Recaps

Post by Gavin Chipper » Sun May 28, 2017 7:34 pm

On Saturday we had CO:KL, and before that me and Stephen Read both did the King's Lynn parkrun! Out of 343 runners, here are the results with the championship points in brackets:

5. Gevin Chapwell - 18:22 (66.7)
164. Stephen Read - 27:37 (33.3)

I set a new PB (my previous best being 18:31), but I was hoping to get a little bit nearer to Jonathan Rawlinson's 18:04. I did lose a second or two because they had the actual finish line halfway along the finish funnel rather than at the start of it like every other parkrun ever, and I slowed down thinking I'd finished. I thought it was a bit stupid really. Stephen wasn't having any of it, saying that he carried on until reached the sign that said "Finish". But given that all other parkruns have the finish at the start of the finish funnel, why would I even be looking ahead for a separate finish sign? It was also a stupid place to have the finish because the finish funnel narrowed and had a turn in it - I watched other people finishing afterwards, and some were slowing down before the actual finish while others behind were trying to complete a sprint finish but then having to slow down themselves because there was no room to carry on at speed. Anyway, the updated points table:

1. Gevin Chapwell - 213.3
2. Oliver Garner - 83.3
3. Mike Springett - 76.7
4. Stephen Read - 53.3
5. Conrad Teixeira - 50
=. James Laverty - 50
7. Zubair Patel - 40
8. Giles Hutchings - 33.3

Before .co.mk, three of us took part in the Milton Keynes parkrun beforehand. And out of 482 runners, here are the results with points in brackets:

6. Gevin Chapwell - 18:58 (75)
169. Dave Ryan - 26:47 (50)
292. Suzy Turner - 31:12 (25)

So congratulations to Dave and Suzy for making their CO:parkrun debuts! There is also the Linford Wood parkrun, which is very close, so I might try that one next year.

And here is the points table:

1. Gevin Chapwell - 288.3
2. Oliver Garner - 83.3
3. Mike Springett - 76.7
4. Stephen Read - 53.3
5. Conrad Teixeira - 50
=. James Laverty - 50
=. Dave Ryan - 50
8. Zubair Patel - 40
9. Giles Hutchings - 33.3
10. Suzy Turner - 25

And finally, I've added Dave and Suzy to the overall PB list, and I also noticed that Stephen Read had previously knocked three seconds off his PB. So here it is:

As promised, here is the updated list with Jonathan Rawlinson in 2nd place. Could he chip away a bit more and challenge Oliver Garner? Or maybe he'll be threatened from behind by the great Gevin Chapwell before long.

Threatened does rather feel like the right word.
Possibly the first contestant to accelerate with a mic clipped...

I finally made my parkrun debut and really enjoyed it. :) Will definitely do more in the future.

As promised, here is the updated list with Jonathan Rawlinson in 2nd place. Could he chip away a bit more and challenge Oliver Garner? Or maybe he'll be threatened from behind by the great Gevin Chapwell before long.
I'm more optimistic than I was a few months ago about being able to run enough to improve my 5K PB and I've given up on all the marathon nonsense so I'm eyeing up second place. I think Oliver's time is out of reach for me.

That's really good. I'll add you on when I next update the list (soon).

That's also really good. I had actually thought from stuff that had been said (and the fact that you're both even older than me!) that both you and Matt Bayfield would be static targets from now on, so it will be interesting to observe your times.

I'm currently training for a marathon (22nd October), but once that's over and I'm back from my holiday that immediately follows, I'll be concentrating on my 5k times. I'm even considering joining a club. These times are not something I can afford to wait years to achieve.

I'm a minute off my PB at my local parkrun at the moment which probably translates to a time of just under 19 minutes at a quicker one so I'm still some way off. No need to check my results for a couple of months and I'll be straight on here if I do get a PB anyway :)

I think you told me which one it was but I've forgotten. Good luck with it, anyway. Also, I'd definitely recommend joining a running club.

It's the Chelmsford marathon. Not exactly a big event, but I think it's a fast enough course, and I'm aiming for under 3 hours.

I got through the ballot for entry into the 2018 London Marathon, so that's two marathons six months apart having never done one before in my life!

That's a little arrogant, to be so certain that you'll finish the first one within 6 months. You might as well get special jumpers made.

I don't think it would matter too much if I was bit late to the start line for the second marathon. I should certainly be able to complete the London marathon in six months and five minutes.
