Round 2: F C T R A E I E I

Stewart: CRAFT (5)
Jack: ARTIFICE (8)
Score: 6–14 (max 14)

I was fishing for an A or an E for two similar nines (can you see them?) but this wasn't a bad alternative

Round 3: U O O C C K S A S

Stewart: CUCKOOS (7)
Jack: CUCKOOS (7)
DC: cossack CASSOCK (7)
Score: 13–21 (max 21)

Round 5: N N T F E A I E A

Stewart: INFANT (6)
Jack: FAINEANT (8)
Score: 13–39 (max 39)

I remember Deeksy misspelling this word at COLIN 2013 against Ed in a game that I hosted, so it's stuck ever since.

Jack buzzes on 2.5 seconds to say UNFEELING which is correct.
Score: 25–71 (max 71)

My first official max game of the weekend and I could take home a badge later. I was happy with some of the spots in this game, so I was off to a good start. My turn to host next.

Paul: atoned (declared as 7)
Stewart: DONATE (6)
DC: ATONED (6)
OT: DOZENTH (7)
Score: 36–42 (max 45)

Not the first time Worsley Snr has declared too many letters. http://wiki.apterous.org/Episode_5997 This time it sees him fall behind.

Paul: FISHNET (7)
Stewart: FINITE (6)
OT: LINEFISH (8) TILEFISH (8)

Two good methods to set up a crucial conundrum.

Round 9: P R U U A T O R S

Paul buzzes on 13 seconds to say RAPTUROUS which is correct.
Score: 63–52 (max 73)

Paul comes out on top in a close game. Now we would go head to head, surprisingly for the first time at a co-event.

Score: 61–43 (max 64)

The good old 302 trick gets me out of jail and I don't have to face a crucial now.

Round 9: O F E N C R O W D

Jack buzzes on 2 seconds to say DOWNFORCE which is correct.
Score: 71–43 (max 74)

In the end, it looks like a comfortable victory but it wasn't. I had scored 71 in both games but I can't work out what I was averaging at this point. Whatever it was, it was enough to see me on table 2 with Giles Hutchings and Adam Gillard.

Round 2: K U B E C I G S T

Jack: buckies
Adam: BUCKETS (7)
Score: 8–15 (max 15)

This sums up my weekend. I may have produced some good words but it's the relatively easy ones that are costing me. Adam forces me into trying a seven which as expected, is a load of sloblock. :x

Dylan Taylor: 980. (25 x 8 - 4) x (3 + 3-1) (10)
Score: 62–69 (max 72)

My plan to play it safe almost cost me but fortunately, Adam could only manage one away too. The only person who solved it was Dylan and thankfully, he was a spectator.

Round 9: C A R N A L L Y I

Jack buzzes on 1 second to say ANCILLARY which is correct.
Score: 72–69 (max 82)

My recent ascension practise pays off here as I manage to snatch the victory against a very strong opponent. If I could beat Giles, I would give myself a real chance of making the final. With his conundrum record, I'd rather not go to a crucial again.

Giles: -
OT: 454. (75 + 10 + 3) x 8 - 25 x 10 (10)
Score: 30–23 (max 33)

A tricky two large which Giles blanks, handing Adam the lead, as he gets to within two.

Round 5: B S D E A E E W S

Adam: SEAWEEDS (8)
Giles: SEAWEEDS (8)
Score: 38–31 (max 41)

We had a mini debate between us, before I looked it up in the ODE3 and found that SEAWEED was listed as a mass noun. I initially disallowed it, before Robbo saved the day and found it had a count noun sense in the ODO, which made it perfectly acceptable. It's not valid on apterous yet but it should be soon as I ticketed it as soon as I got home.

Round 6: D E M E C I S U Y

Adam: MISCUED (7)
Giles: MISCUED (7)
Score: 45–38 (max 48)

Neither of them MISCUED in this round.

Round 7: N R T E E O T L A

Adam: TOLERANT (8)
Giles: TOLERATE (8)
Score: 53–46 (max 56)

This round means that both players have maxed every letters round. :) Just the numbers game separating them and another one is coming up next. It's Adam's pick, what will he go for?

Round 8: 6, 3, 5, 3, 10, 10. Target: 865.

Adam: 865. (3 x 6 x 10 - 10 + 3) x 5 (10)
Giles: 865. (3 x 6 x 10 - 10 + 3) x 5 (10)
Score: 63–56 (max 66)

Obviously wary of how lethal Giles can be on conundrums, Adam chooses six small in a bid to avoid a crucial. It's not the six small he would want, though as both players get there via the same route. Who will come out on top?

Round 9: C L A U A I C A L

Giles buzzes on 1 second to say ACALCULIA which is correct.
Score: 63–66 (max 76)

Once again, Giles produces a magnificent lightning solve to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. Adam must have been wishing that we were only playing 8-rounders.

I didn't make sufficient notes for the final but I'm sure someone else did (James, I'm looking at you again). Thanks to Ben and his mum for once again providing an unforgettable weekend. I'll be back next year and hopefully many more years after that. I hope to see many of you at another co-event soon. Until then, take care and thanks for reading! :D

Re: COLIN XI: The Hangover Recaps

Post by James Robinson »

So, off to South Hykeham for the Hangover on a lovely Sunday morning.

The draw for the first games did bring up an interesting conclusion, a match with Apterous Prune, for the first time ever for me, but also a match with Giles Hutchings, who was still on a great high after a strong finish in the main tournament the day before.

I thought the idea was to use the same selections (apart from the conundrum) and score separately when you played Prune. That's what Tom Carey and I did at the main event.

To be fair, I assumed that your method was how you were supposed to play against Prune before this event too. Then Ben explained the other way just before the draw for the main event took place. Doesn't really matter too much, though, I suppose.

I thought you were supposed to play the same game as each other, but other people did it differently. I played Elfeshire and we had two separate games against Prune. When he was acting as Prune' picking agent against me, he picked randomly for vowel or consonant for the 8th and 9th letters rather than basing it on what might look good. He was going to do a random pick for the numbers but I drew the line at that and insisted on a 1 large.

I see why two players playing both their Pruney games at the same time to the same selections while alternating picks makes sense, although I'd never heard of it being done that way before Ben explained it on Saturday. It's quicker, and both players are playing for points, so if one of the players picks a difficult selection it affects them as much as it does their opponent.

FWIW, the one time I've been on a table with a prune at an event (which was against Jon Corby at last year's Hangover), we played two separate pruney games, but the human player got all the picks.

I kind of like two separate games. Two major advantages is that you don't have awkward hosting issues (Ben doesn't have to do the conundrum, you don't have to alternate hosting duties, etc.) and that you still play three games like other tables, so don't have to wander round or make awkward conversation for the last 5-10 minutes. Thankfully I was Pruned up with Michelle so we spent a lovely little time talking about Ryan.

Graeme: CAPTION (7)
Innis: CAPTION (7)
OT: COATING (7) COOPING (7) COTINGA (7) OCTAGON (7) POGONIA (7)
Score: 49–48 (max 56)

Round 7: N W N U O E S Y T

Graeme: NEWTONS (7)
Innis: NEWTONS (7)
OT: NEUSTON (7) SYNTONE (7)
Score: 56–55 (max 63)

Round 8: 100, 25, 75, 50, 10, 2. Target: 598.

Graeme: 598. (50 x 10) + 100 - 2 (10)
Innis: 598. (50 x 10) + 100 - 2 (10)
Score: 66–65 (max 73)

Graeme's 2nd attempt to kill the game off doesn't have the desired effect either, so it's CRUCIAL CONUNDRUM time :!: :!:

Round 9: R A C K E T E D F

Innis buzzes on 2 seconds to say AFTERDECK which is correct.
Final Score: 66–75 (max 83)

Up against Innis though, getting the conundrum ahead of him would be quite something, which like me before him, he couldn't do either.......

So, a phenomenal table 5 has had a a thrilling climax, but not as much as the grand final between Conor and Jack, which is next......... ;) :) :D  8-)

So, now it's time for the Grand Final of The Hangover tournament.

4 players actually won all 4 of their matches, but only the 2 with the highest accumulative totals would compete in this match, and they happened to be Conor Travers, who scored 302 points in his 4 matches, and Jack Worsley with 285 points. (The 2 who missed out were Zarte Siempre (269) and Jamie McNeill (262)).

Enjoy. ;) :) :D
