Re: COLIN XI - Recaps

Post by Jack Worsley »

After yet another superb COLIN tournament, I'll join in with the recapping action as usual. For round 1, I faced a new experience as I would face “Apterous Prune” for the first time. As there were two of them playing, they were called “Prunier” and “Pruniest” to differentiate between them, and I would face the latter, not that it made any difference. My human opponent would be Thomas, or Tom Carey, who was a familiar opponent. We would play first and it certainly felt different without a host.

This time I go blank and Tom closes the gap to just two points, although he could have gone one better by adding the Y. I now face a big decision over the crucial final numbers selection.

Round 8: 2, 5, 8, 10, 4, 4. Target: 829.

Jack: 828. (10 x 5 x 2 + 4) x 8 - 4 (7)
Tom: 828. (10 x 5 x 2 + 4) x 8 - 4 (7)
Score: 48–46 (max 55)

The six small turns out to be impossible, which guarantees a crucial conundrum. We both manage to get as close as possible.

Round 9: S O F T P H O N R

Jack buzzes on 2 seconds to say SHOPFRONT which is correct.
Score: 58–46 (max 65)

Tom wasn't far behind, as he got as far as -FRONT. I was just happy to get off to a winning start against a tough opponent.

Now we would both play against Prune using the same selections (with the exception of separate conundrums) but not against each other. With us both guaranteed the win, it was an opportunity to add some much-needed points to our totals.

Andy: REDSHANK (8)

Score: 21–41 (max 50)

After seven letters, Andy very subtly suggests that KNOBHEADS might be on by saying that he wants a B and an N. After the N comes out, it gets even more exciting and he even encourages Jamie to fish for it and he does. Sadly it's not a B but Andy does at least give himself a tiny glimmer of hope with an impressive darrenic eight. He probably sponged it from his semi-final.

Round 8: 75, 50, 25, 100, 3, 4. Target: 634.

Andy: -
Jamie: 632. (75 - 50) x 25 + 4 + 3 (7)

Score: 21–48 (max 57)

Andy needs to win the round by ten to have any chance but he is doomed by this numbers game because it's impossible. He doesn't even offer anything and Jamie wraps up the win.

Round 9: V A S E L I B E D

Jamie buzzes on 1 second to say DEVISABLE which is correct.

Round 9: P S A T I T U D N

Final Score: 61–51 (max 62)

And within a second, the game is mine, although mine and Dinos' joy would be eradicated an hour or so later by Ben & Innis, when they noticed that we missed JOCOSITY in round 1.

Ah well, hey-ho, never mind, it was still a great finish to the day's play for me, and now time for the final between Innis Carson and Mark Deeks.

Mark makes it a perfect six victories for the day and guarantees his place in the final. Also, if either player can tell me what the other number was, it would be most appreciated as for some reason, I only wrote down five.
I don't normally keep my scribblings for CO-event games, but this one's still on the notepad I brought home. The missing number was a 6.

I'd forgotten Susie was there. The best bit was later in the evening when she ended Kirk's 12-game darts winning streak with a 170 checkout.

Re: COLIN XI - Recaps

So, with so many top quality players at this weekend's tournament, it's almost impossible to pick which 2 will be in the final, but we have the 2013 champion, Mark Deeks, and a man who has won 5 events, although is making his début at COLIN this year, Innis Carson.

Interestingly, Innis has won all 5 of his previous finals he has been in, so who would bet against him today....... :? :?:

But, Mark did do one of the most amazing comebacks in CO-event final history in defeating Kirk in 2013.

So, who will win? Let's find out :!: Enjoy. ;) :) :D

COLIN XI Grand Final Recap for Saturday 24 January 2015.

C1: #2 Seed Mark Deeks (6 games, 6 wins, 381 points.)
C2: #1 Seed Innis Carson (6 games, 6 wins, 408 points.)
DC: Lauren Hamer.

Round 1: T U F O L A L Y I

Mark: floatily
Innis: AUTOFILL (8)
DC: FAULTILY (8)
Score: 0–8 (max 8)

Both players guess with 8's, but whereas Mark's doesn't comply, Innis' is there, giving him the perfect start.

Round 2: T T M E A P A P B

Mark: tapeta
Innis: BEMATA (6)
DC: TAPPET (6)
Score: 0–14 (max 14)

Even more bad news for Mark, as the plural of TAPETUM is TAPETUMS, not tapeta. :(

Round 3: R E S E F A L Y K

Mark: LEAKERS (7)
Innis: LEAKERS (7)
DC: FLAYERS (7)
Score: 7–21 (max 21)

Now they're both on the board, thanks to some LEAKERS. :P

Round 4: 100, 25, 4, 7, 5, 5. Target: 811.

Mark: 810. ((100 x 4) + 5) x (7 - 5) (7)
Innis: 812. (100 + 25 - 5 - 4) x 7 (7)
Score: 14–28 (max 28)

Both are 1 away, but that's perfection as 811 is impossible............

Round 5: N S G I I U W R E

Mark: SWINGIER (8)
Innis: SWINGIER (8)
Score: 22–36 (max 36)

SWINGIER, SWINGIER, SWINGIER............ :P :P :P

Round 6: N U T A C A L S V

Mark: SULTANA (7)
Innis: LACUNAS (7)
DC: VASCULA (7)
Score: 29–43 (max 43)

An impressive trio of 7's available here.

Round 7: E R A S M X I D D

Mark: DISARMED (8)
Innis: DISARMED (8)
Score: 37–51 (max 51)

A nice letters darren to finish with for each here.

Round 8: 5, 4, 1, 10, 4, 2. Target: 925.

Mark: 920. (((10 + 1) x 4) + 2) x 5 x 4 (7)
Innis: 920. ((5 x 4) + 2 + 1) x 4 x 10 (7)
OT: 928. (((5 + 1) x 10) - 2) x 4 x 4 (7)
Score: 44–58 (max 58)

Both Mark and Innis manage 5 away with the 6 small, which gives Innis the title, and while he doesn't have a perfect MAX GAME, he is still on 100%, so is still on for an imperfect MAX GAME.............

Round 9: O R E R P I T C H

Mark buzzes on 2 seconds to say ORPHRETIC which is incorrect.
Innis buzzes on 4 seconds to say PETRICHOR which is correct.
Final Score: 44–68 (max 68)

So, this super-hard conundrum appears, and after a couple of seconds, Mark gives the incorrect answer of PROPHETIC, but within another couple of seconds, Innis comes in to seal his glorious day, and become the most successful champion in CO-event history with 6 wins, taking him one clear of both Chris Wills and Jack Worsley.

An imperfect MAX GAME to boot made it a brilliant day for Innis on his first ever COLIN tournament, and his phenomenal CO-event final record also remains intact as well. 8-) 8-) 8-)

So, next up is the Hangover tournament, which as luck would have it, took place the next day.

See you then :!: :!: ;) :) :D  8-)
