Not a failure Dinos!
Nobody knows everything.... I was a bit narked when a very experienced colleague published a paper with a mistake in the title! Anyway IUPAC will now spite me by using propanone when they publish the next rule book, which was due last year.

Re: How Smart Do You Think You Are?
No Dinos, the answer to question 3 is acetone! Propanone is not IUPAC (well, not yet anyway - the Americans will probably try to get that changed.) Schools in UK use propanone because they have amended IUPAC names to be more systematic, (e.g ethanoic acid instead of acetic acid - as "ethan"...

I see in Sandi Toksvig's column in the Sunday Telegraph, that to day is the birthday (born 1899) of the inventor of Scrabble, Alfred Mosher Butts. Crazy name, crazy guy.

Good point - a friend of mine suggested that the best way to foul up the game was to take the first offer!
Noel hasn't killed any contestants yet, but that might do the trick.

Thanks guys - absolutely brilliant. I think if Eva Braun had confined herself to designing the Braun electric shaver, how much different the world would be. I was at the Alamo a few years ago, always marketed as USA versus Mexico, and of the "179" defenders, there were 12 from England, a s...

And because of this, it is quite likely for one player to have seven wins and then lose the final game, and yet have a higher points total than another player who wins all eight games. Who, then, is higher in the seeding table? Does number of wins take precedence, or is total points counted first?[/...

The aficianodos will know this already but I observed in this morning's game that "Y" counts as a vowel, and the electronic randomness of the letters gave "Q" in two successive selections and 2 "Z"s in one selection!

Tex Ritter's version of D of C was much better! Is "Lingo" still broadcast in USA? It used to be on an obscure satellite channel over here. A major worry with American game shows (and most English ones now) is the unnatural, interminable, inane screaming and wild applause. I don't mean thi...

Today's programme had an impossible numbers game, 1 2 2 3 4 6 with target 670 or some such, but one player got points despite missing the target by about 300! The standard is good - all the other numbers games were possible, although two were really difficult, but both contestants got them all. I wa...

Round 5: 10, 8, 1, 9, 8, 50. Target: 212.
C1: -
C2: 210.Mistake in working.
CV: 212. (10+8)*9+50 (late) (10)
Score: 11–24 (max 37)
Or indeed (9+8) * 10 = 170 then + 50 -8 seems a bit easier....
