Re: Words You Would Have Thought...
PINATA.
It's in my ODE3 as piñata. The accented N should be allowed (DC suggested MAÑANA a couple of days ago). Is it not also in ODE2?
It does say "chiefly N. Amer.", but that to me implies it's an American word, rather than an American spelling of an English word.

Re: Feature requests
A resign feature. The problem with that is you could resign before the game ends, potentially denying your opponent the chance of a high score or whatever. You could restrict it only to situations where the game goes to a tie-break, and automatically award the other player the points for that round...

Also of interest is the article linked to by that one: http://www.guardian.co.uk/tv-and-radio/2010/nov/04/student-slang-too-strong-for-countdown Well, I say "of interest", but that article is really just a procession of factual errors. The biggest howler is in the last paragraph: "He ...

Presumably lowest score in most variants would be 0 more or less? That's true, but if the bots were excluded would there be many human players scoring 0? Bizarrely some otherwise sane players would deliberately score 0 just to get their name on the page, so I'm afraid it would be pointless. What, s...

So Mark's last play in Game 5 - was that a complete punt since he knew he'd lose otherwise? Edit: On closer inspection I realise he had two stabs at it - anyone know what he thought he was going for? I think invalid words aren't automatically disallowed; the opponent has to challenge them. Furtherm...

I think what David is suggesting is a list of precedents so that at least a given word won't change status from episode to episode. Sounds like a good idea to me, and now it's been suggested here we can pretty much guarantee it won't happen. I can see one problem with such a list of precedents bein...

One day I'm going to stop coming up with new item ideas. Today is not that day. :-) How about a "jammy dodger" for winning a game by being behind on a crucial conundrum and getting it with <=1.0s left? I suppose it shouldn't be awarded if your opponent has already buzzed, otherwise there's...

A last second spot from Jane brings her to within 4 points of Claire. Susie didn't mention it but MOLER^ is invalid from Claire. I think her word was MOLAR. Susie did mention that there wasn't an A, but it happened quite quickly. Maybe in the studio, but not on the broadcast. I've just looked at it...

I assumed Jonathan had just pronounced VESTIGE incorrectly. I did notice that in round 4, he offered TUMBLE (unless I heard it wrong), but nobody picked up on the fact that there was no L in the selection. Not that it mattered since Jack had a 7, but I thought it was odd. Many congratulations on you...

FALSIE. Susie mentioned only the other day that FALSIES were pads for putting in bras, but apparently you can't have only one of them. What if you've got one breast smaller than the other? And yes, RATIONALS really ought to be in the dictionary. The argument against inclusion could be that the noun ...

I think the point Damian is making is that it's no longer a level playing field. Regular 40/50 point victory margins don't make for good TV. That's a good point about whether it makes entertaining television, but I was using "level playing field" to refer to equality of opportunity rather...

What about number of maxes, then total conundrum time? It deals with the case Ryan describes, but still makes reasonably sure of breaking the tie when many people get the same number of points and maxes (or max the whole duel, like yesterday).

My first question is, how would people feel about using total conundrum time as a tie-breaker?
