Corby and Howard have reminded me of Martin Jarvis. I had forgotten him.
He and Digance have the least entertainment value for me in their segments.
The prospect of 5 programmes with Richard Digance and Martin Jarvis causes me to emit
and audible groan.

The Dictionary Corner guest spot.
I have just heard Anne Widdecombe tell a joke (in an inappropriate authoritarian manner) which has been told previously on the programme (with minor variations as happens with jokes). Wouldn`t the producers have spotted this and advised against a repeat telling? It has caused me to reflect on the Di...

I`m sorry Jason; I can`t share your thoughts.
I am finding he has a depressing effect on me.
Sorry.

Re: Who would you like to see in DC?
I wouldn`t like former contestants to be in Dictionary Corner. Winning games of Countdown is not automatically a qualification for Dictionary Corner. Don`t forget too, that Countdown winners and charisma don`t always come together in one packet. Sorry to quote my own post, but current champion, Ton...

"...and a better one..."
After hearing it said for so many years I believe any contestant who - after being offered an `X` or a `Z` - says "And a better one please Carol", should be severely punished. Perhaps taken outside and horse-whipped, or automatically eliminated. Or both. Just to show how reasonable I am - ...

Re: An interesting Countdown observation
That is indeed an interesting observation. I have watched Countdown since it started, and it is something that has not registered with me. The presenter and Carol are often referred to by their Christian names throughout the programme, but, as you say, they are not officially introduced. When introd...

Re: John Inverdale
He was pretty good. Pleasant and fluent. He has long been a good communicator though.
(Incidentally neither Jo Brand nor anybody else could be less funny than Richard Digance).
What about Graham Garden for Dictionary Corner?

Re: What happens if Carol retires?
After all these years it wouldn`t be too easy to get used to any changes. But surely there are people in the world (or in this country even) who have a little charisma, and who are smart at doing sums. There is absolutely no reason why Countdown should end if any of the `regulars` left the show. The...

Re: Susie is great
I agree too.
I think Susie Dent is splendid.
Does anyone remember a rather bumptious man - may have been called Richard Sampson (?) - who always crossed off the word he was talking about with a flourish of his pencil. I didn`t like him at all in Dictionary Corner. Quite a while ago.

Re: Des - Hearing Difficulties
On the subject of hearing difficulties - dare I mention Carol? She often asks a contestant for a repeat. She will say "A vowel?" or "A consonant", often quite unnecessarily in my opinion. Is it to extend her airtime? A habit? Just to indicate mateyness? I sense she doesn`t actual...

Re: Richard Digance
To please me the guests don`t have to be *funny* (as in comedy performers), but evidence of wit would be appreciated. Because the programme is largely based on words I also enjoy it more if the guest has verbal skill and an obvious fondness for the language. I agree that David Mitchell could be good...
