Re: Bug reports

Yes, there are exclamation marks. Funny, I hadn't noticed them until you pointed them out.

How annoying, Java had been shouting at me for a while to install the update and I'd been ignoring it, then did it specially before attempting to use Apterous. Pah.

Re: How-To Guides

You're right Michael, prioritisation would be hard. Might well be an individual thing. Maybe best just to list tips and people work out priorities for themselves. Still some things are obv higher on the list, e.g. dividing target by big numbers.

Re: How-To Guides

Oh yes, you can pretty much guarantee that anyone you meet in England with this surname will be directly related to me. Tis rarer than it sounds (spelt this way, that is).

I'll tell him you said hello! He's rather enjoying being retired, but I bet he'll start doing research etc again soon.

Re: Bug reports

Ah, I see. Well I assume Charlie already knows about that, seeing as it seems to be happening to a lot of people. Happens to me a lot. Everything going fine, then pop-up window doesn't repaint itself and is see-through. Sound effects continue, implying software is still doing stuff, just not visible...

Re: New members

Would it be cheeky to request basic user's guide for how to get started? I was utterly mystified when I first arrived and couldn't find Help or Instructions links anywhere. Of course they probably do exist and I was just crap at finding them. I know this stuff can be time consuming though so please ...

Re: Countdown Scattergories III

Controversial I know, but looking stuff up can be part of the fun. Like using a dictionary. Don't worry, I'm playing devil's advocate really. Worth explicitly stating in the rules though.

How-To Guides

I've been looking for detailed tips on how to approach the numbers game, starting with adding/subtracting before multiplying but also including more advanced techniques, basically (hopefully) culminating in a "try this, then this, then this" format, with prioritisation of more fruitful tec...

Re: Bug reports

When I'm doign Dily Duel and the pop-up window freezes and stops displaying contents (at which point everything else hangs too), if I close everything down and go back in, my daily duel has disappeared from Games In Progress. This doesn't seem to happen with other types of game.

Re: Countdown Scattergories III

"implicit" Why, if not stated? Purely as a problem-solving approach, my first thought was to use software. Don't worry though, I've never yet used software for Countdown. My abysmal performance on Apterous should bear that out (don't pay attention to my rating, apparently there's a bug - l...

Re: Countdown Scattergories III

Hmmm, but wouldn't there be merit in trying to choose the most obvious word, on the basis that everyone else will be avoiding it? Although of course, people may have already thought of that, making it not such a good strategy after all... Interstingly, there's nothing in the rules says you can't use...

Re: Hello

"I don't think it would be hard to dial Millionaire's contestant hotline" That's not the hard bit. The hard bit is getting through the lottery of being hat-picked against all the other millions who have also dialled the hotline. Although you do also have to answer a qu on the hotline, and ...

"I should think they'd be happy to put you up from the night before your recording date until whenever you finish your run." Oh right, that's cool ...although I might have to decline the night-before bed cos I have to minimise time away from (currently) 6-month-old baby and can travel to L...

Re: Hello

Ha well, it's funny but I really wouldn't give two hoots if there were no prizes at all. I just want the fun of playing Countdown on the telly. As it is I will be very excited if I win a teapot. As for Millionaire, I'd love to be on that show, but it's stupidly hard to get on the show, and THEN you ...

"There is a separate thread for people to post in" Is there? Bother! I specifically looked for one, as well. Is it well-hidden, or was I just being dim? Have just updated website home page, as realised it was a bit out of date. Phil, nice to have company. Thanks for the congrats everyone, ...

Re: Hello

Lesley, I already had an audition... and just heard, I passed. I'm going to be on the show! V. exciting. And no I didn't mean SLAINTE, I just invented two respectively-anagrammatic words (SLANTIE, ALISTEN) in my sleep. God knows why. But yes, SLAINTE is in there as another real-word anagram. Are the...

Hello

The instructions said to come here first to introduce myself... so here I am. Had audition on Tue, spent most of yesterday playing on Apterous, ended up that I dreamt in anagrams last night. Woke up at one point trying to work out whether SLANTIE was anagram of ALISTEN, neither of which are words (I...

Re: Risk(y words)

I risked 'FELATED' in the audition. Sadly it has two Ls. Turned out to be risky as well as risque. Tried FREEBUMS in an Apterous game last night, but I knew it wasn't a word, also knew I oculdn't better my opponent's word so just tried it for a laugh. I'd do it on the show if I knew it wouldn't make...
