Re: Politics in General
It’s the outsourced company which ought to have its contract revoked. What a waste of public money. Further proof, if any be needed, that taxpayer-funded programs offer little value for money. Taxpayer-funded programs have the ability to do well. When in the hands of this government, who have prove...

Surrounded by Idiots by Thomas Erikson is good if you want to start realizing just how annoying someone else might find you irritating. On Alan Ryan's On Politics makes for a ...

Only tested once back in July, when I came down with chills and a fever. The good news is that it came back negative. The bad news is that it was food poisoning instead. I got to celebrate my negative test whilst regretting going near KFC

The fact that you're still obsessing over this ancient history whilst Margaret Ferrier is still an MP indicates bias, quite frankly. When it emerged Ferrier had broken the rules, she was suspended from the SNP immediately, Sturgeon condemned her actions-she did all she could, courtesy of her having...

Words 'in the wild'
Inspired by this from the 'You Know You're Playing Too Much Apterous When...' (if there has been a similar thread already apologies-I couldn't find one) You know you're playing too much if you get excited when you see an obscure word "in the wild". What examples have you had of this? It was the only...

Records/cassettes being brought today. I can understand collections from a time when they were ubiquitous, but now? YouTube, Spotify and many other services exist giving you every song you want, as you like it, at the click of a button and have done for some time. Spending £15 because something 'sou...

But I pronounce water as wartah. Do you use the glottal stop? My ex wife comes from the Midlands and I liked the way she pronounced tooth and bus. Roundabouts shall forever be 'islands'. Also, people don't use the word 'gambol' enough :) One quirk of mine; when talking at speed, the 'tt' sound in w...

Roughly half-a-stone upwards. Have been walking a lot more, but that has been far outweighed (no pun intended) by me being slumped behind my laptop, playing Apto, steadily reducing my household's supply of biscuits.

Re: Fun stuff you've just found (music, etc)
Couldn't find a thread for things like this so started a new one. Yesterday I was introduced to a new musical genre that goes by the name of 'bardcore', or sometimes 'tavernwave'. This is an absolute banger. The concept was introduced to me as a sort of funny meme thing but I think it's genuinely b...

Not so useful at the moment, but when the time comes to make train journeys again, Real Time Trains (https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/ also comes in a paid app on mobile) lets you know which platform your train is going from before they announce it (for most major stations, they don't tell you strai...

Manual gearboxes (for your average car-lorries and other vehicles are a different story, I know). Automatic is far easier to deal with, not having to fuck about with the clutch and it makes roundabouts much simpler to navigate. About the only thing the US has got right is the demise of 'stickshift.'...

Re: Unusual Fears/Phobias
Courtesy of an industrial-strength bout of OCD in my early teens (that has since fucked off), I wound up suffering with the wonderfully named hexakosioihexekontahexaphobia-or 'fear of 666', which led to a general dislike of the number 6. If the same product cost £6.99 or £8.99, I'd buy the more expe...

Re: It's The End Of The World As We Know It (And How Will We Feel Fine?)
One thing that I should have mentioned is widespread face-mask usage. Some countries in the Far East already saw regular public face mask usage courtesy of previous outbreaks (China had SARS in 2002, South Korea had MERS in 2015) whereas those doing so in the West would garner weird looks. It defini...

It's The End Of The World As We Know It (And How Will We Feel Fine?)
As we steadily emerge blinking from our grottoes after numerous weeks of recreational curve-flattening, what we knew has gone and a brave new world now will rise. Along with far more people working from home, aversion to handshakes and hearts skipping beats every time someone in the near vicinity co...

Hang on, I'm confused. Is there an issue with salt grinders in general? The use of the word "mechanical" somehow puts me on edge and makes me think you might be talking about a particularly special kind of salt grinder. Because yes, freshly ground rock salt is an entirely different thing to powdere...

Fountain pens. I have dysgraphia (linked to dyspraxia) meaning my writing is a cursive, looking like a black spider memo scrawled by someone mid-seizure and my hand cramps up after half-a-page. I use cheap fountain pens because I find you don't have to press as hard, which lets me write longer and ...
