Re: Words 'in the wild'

Just watching a lecture.

Lecturer says 'if you want to collect words for things like scrabble, then metabotype = ____'

Unfortunately it's invalid in both Countdown and Scrabble :(

Re: Words 'in the wild'

I've started studying Biology this year.

So many sequences of letters have become real-life words!

E.g. ____ZOANS, LIGATES, DENATURED, and many more

That is very cool Jack.

I might try and do something similar in my gap year... It looks both fun and helpful!

Re: What is the best order in which to learn words?

It seems that you're way ahead of me (which is not really a surprise!) and have thought about everything I had to say, but hopefully it might be somewhat helpful to someone else!

Re: What is the best order in which to learn words?

If you didn't know, Rob Foster has a spreadsheet in which he's simulated a few million games and ranked words by usefulness. (I think Jack Hurst and Paul Erdunast may have contributed in some ways - I don't remember exactly so apologies if I'm not giving appropriate credit!) In the spreadsheet, you ...

Re: Religion

Don't worry about me Fiona. I'm not currently close to that point, and I suspect there's a good chance I won't ever be, but it is something I think I ought to investigate. It's a question of truth, not personal happiness. After all, it says in Corinthians: "And if Christ has not been raised, our pre...

Re: Religion

In addition to Callum's points: most religious people are brought up that way. It's a basis for their moral modus operandi, and if that works for them, I can certainly get why many don't dig too deep to find out if it's actually true. This has become a very pertinent question for me ever since I fi...

Re: Ratings

I don't know why so many people seem to poo-poo the relevance of rolling ratings. I mean, it suits me in a way, because according to ProRanks I was better than Conor or Kirk the last time I looked, but clearly that's bollocks. I find rolling ratings to be a better indicator of how tight (and hence ...

OK, I'm going to have a go at replying to a lot of responses I've had. Sorry it's taken so long! I had not realised until now how much of an e...

I agree. I also wouldn't waste much time with anyone who believes that something written in a book is hard evidence I'm sorry if I was unclear. I cannot claim that the Bible is hard evidence, but I do claim that Jesus almost certainly existed. Now you mention it though, perhaps my assumption on thi...

Re: Religion

I'm a Christian. I've arrived at this point having considered the evidence, but also having met with God personally. That doesn't mean I don't doubt my faith (very often) and I'm very aware that some of the stuff I say can sound ludicrous to non-believers. The first thing I'd like to point out is th...

Both these two very likely to be the top two in the whole series so very unfortunate that they have to come against each other before the finals!

Hi Zarte - thought you might want to know that the date given for this event on the FOCAL page on the apterous wiki is 19th August rather than 12th August (which is the date shown everywhere else) Question: How do I sign up exactly? Dan Walker came and did the presentations at my local Christian Youth local 5-a-side league and told the story of how he got into his current job at the BBC (not sure if this has been told on countdown before) - he's a very nice man and I appreciate that he has time for ordinary people - his kids al...

I agree with you on the 'not too much between 2 and 7' - Think the seedings are pretty accurate though for the final outcome - I see a (1),(2) final with (3) and (4) in the semis.
