This may sound harsh but I always think it's strange when people always go for stuff like 3 large when they're not very good at it. Or even if it's just the pressure of the studio, accept that and pick something easier. They have been quite hard 3Large ones as I only got 1 away on that one - though...

If the machine is purely trying to fuck you then surely it will never give you any of the bonus things if it can give you 0-3 or whatever. And of course it would never spin a red. The GROANIEST/ORANGIEST round is the classic one where if you want to play tricks on your opponent, you can sit back and relax in order to make them think you have a nine (knowing that eight is the max) to force them to declare an invalid word.
