Thursday 4th July 2014 ← ЕГГОГ

The 4th was a Friday. (I know because it's a holiday in my country, so no Friday night social dance for me...)

Re: Bir Kelime Bir İşlem (Turkish Countdown)

Having some fun trying to work out the rules, but I'm struggling - why at 9:43 is one of the contestants allowed to buzz in during a letters round with a 7? Because the letters game is harder in Turkish, I guess. I'm not sure I've ever seen a 9-letter word, and that's even with the joker. And what ...

Bir Kelime Bir İşlem (Turkish Countdown)

I have been watching Bir Kelime Bir İşlem, which is the Turkish version of Countdown.

Link to episode #116 is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EhRYnbfw8S0
I recommend watching it, if only for the numbers games in this episode.

Playing words you don't know

I was watching some old episodes of Countdown online. More specifically, I was watching some with Kirk Bevins, and here's what I make of it: Watching a game with someone like Kirk Bevins playing is boring. Clearly he had just memorized a list of legal plays. So while the other contestant is trying &...

Re: Countdown in the news

I'm split between wanting to know what happened to make Rachel want a divorce, and not wanting to stoop to the level of following celebrity gossip.

Re: Puzzle for programmers #2

I kind of like this puzzle. I live in the USA, where we don't have those machines (pity), but we do have YouTube, so I am a bit familiar with the genre you are describing. he pointed out that the machine in question doesn't actually play truly optimally against you, even when it's out-and-out trying...

Re: Puzzle for programmers #2

The rules are simple, you guess higher/lower, and the machine spins in a number and you either win or lose (it can't spin back to the same number). The RED numbers are no-lose; you will always win the gamble whether you choose higher or lower. What I'm interested in is how many gambles I can guaran...

Re: Puzzle for programmers

What the "trippy" function does: Give it a binary-coded decimal number and it will triple it. Example: Give it 75h, get 225h. How it works: Multiplication works the same in any base, except for the carries. Example: 123 * 3 = 369 (decimal), and 123h * 3h = 369h (hexadecimal) In this case, ...

Puzzle for programmers

Here is a "trippy" function of my own invention. Because I don't know your preferred programming language, I am posting in pseudocode. (Here, hexadecimal constants end with an h, so Fh is fifteen and 10h is sixteen.) function trippy (int32 ball) { int32 bat = ball * 5 bat = BitwiseOr(bat, ...

Re: Series 70 - 2014 onwards.

And while you're at it, you can computerize the letters board like they did with Wheel of Fortune. And ditto with the numbers board, having the board also automatically provide solutions (naturally), thus leaving Rachel with nothing whatever to do other than smile and look pretty. If you're going to...

Re: Hello from overseas

Don't know if they work in the US though. They don't. Maybe we don't have Countdown for the same reason as we don't have the metric system. Did you know that there is even a Hebrew version of Countdown? I only managed to find one tiny clip of it, though: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f-33wvhvWfQ M...

Hello from overseas

How does one "introduce" oneself online, really? Well, here's my attempt: My name is Robert Lozyniak. I'm male and in my mid-30s. I live in Connecticut, which is a state in the USA. A lot of stuff I like is hard to find here. For example, I wanted a men's wallet with a pocket for coins, an...

CECIL as a counter

I was wondering about number picks for a "generalized" version of the Countdown numbers game. What I mean by "generalized" is: The numbers on the cards may be any positive integers whatsoever. Carol/Rachel need not draw exactly six cards: it is only required that she draw (and, o...
