I still can't help feeling that Alan would have been a serious contender for the semi-finals had he not come up against Giles. Fantastic non-apto contestant, one of the best imo.

Dylan Taylor and Josh Hurst are either this series or next series.
Zarte Siempre is on next series, as is Jen Steadman I think.

Has anyone ever won a 15-rounder without maxing a single round? Also, what's the lowest combined number of maxes by the contestants in a 15-rounder? Just have to get this out there, 'cause it happens, like, almost never. So happy
However great play from both contestants, thoroughly enjoyable. Looks like we've got a cracking finals to look forward to.

A couple of Countdown related things I've been pondering.... Is it possible to have a legitimate letters selection where the max is a 2 (or 1) letter word? Perhaps something like... U U U U X J Q Z K There are a few selections which yield a 2 max, and 1 or 2 that may yield 0 max, but a 1 max is imp...

I think the fact that he buzzed at the death in a crucial conundrum is pushing it too far. Jon and Stephen were clearly trying to spot it. If it's right at the last second, then I don't see too much of a problem. In a regular episode people have done it. Chris Davies more or less did so to defeat I...

I used to do that, but when you get series like S67 where there were 7 octochamps, playing the same people for 56 episodes does become slightly more boring than it used to. I like variety.Zarte Siempre wrote:I always play the champ. If it's 2 newbies I get someone to pick the one they think looks smarter.

Even if he'd been on before, it doesn't sound likely that the astro-physics graduate would be beaten by a retired man.
Good game though, one of my favourite non-apto contestants for some reason.

Re: Calculating one's own score
What I tend to do is create a wiki/apto style grid and play one contestant. I try to play against as many people as possible in a series. Out of 27 prelims, I've only missed 3 people to play against.

I can see what point you're getting at here. However, when it comes to events such as the finals, if there's only one or two apterites in the finals, along with all the other finalists, then the majority of the matches become far too predictable. Knowing who's going to make the finals rather than wh...

I think as much as people don't like his practices and the way he did things, I think Jeffrey Hansford, just based on pure ability, is up there. Some stumbling blocks and obviously some buzzing controversy, but as I understand it (and those of you in the know can interject where I can't), there was...

Talented Non-Apterous Contestants
This may not be worded the best, but here goes: These days, a lot of the startlingly good contestants that appear on countdown are from apterous. However, every now and again we would get these kind of people in the era before apterous had begun (e.g, Craig Beevers, Paul Gallen etc.). These days, be...
