Re: Best 9 of all time

Was just browsing some random games from the 1990s and came across a Series 27 Dictionary Corner spot that is probably among the best ever: SFORZATOS. (I still think that honour has to go to LORAZEPAM, though.)

As a side note, I do find it strange that K has not appeared for FIFTEEN episodes in a row. It's like it was lost for a whole filming week. It will be interesting to see if it appears tomorrow. Such a thing has happened before. Someone else can probably find the reference. The V (of which there was...

Or Dinos Sfyris.

In Series 76, I was quite impressed by WAGGONERS, especially as it was spotted by both Jeff Clayton and his opponent. Six consonants, and three of them aren't particularly nice. PRESOAKED by Stephen Read was also class.

I'm sure 'Champion of Champions' headers were placed over the clock during CoCs up to and including CoCX.
Yep, this too. Also, during the 25th birthday special in 2007, the number "25" was superimposed on the clock and various other areas of the studio.

As far as I know, there have been 8 sets used since the show began: 1. Original purplish set with grid of squares in background (Series 1-17) 2. Short-lived set with wooden panels behind letters/numbers board (Series 18-21, probably Countdown Masters too) 3. Wings set -- reddish-pink background (Ser...

Has anyone else noticed that Nick's spiel asking people to apply for Countdown (typically read just after the first commercial break) is just a recording? Every time it's played, he makes pauses/hesitations in the same places, most notably saying "If you'd like to become a -- a Countdown contestant".
