It doesn't matter how good you are at the game, the machine has you in its pocket from the start. If lots of people have played and lost, then the target points level decreases, so you may only need to get 1000 points to start earning money, which can be done by say, a 7-letter word, a decent number...

Yeah, but plenty of series have had more than one 800 octochamp, so therefore plenty of 800 octochamps have not won the series. You can argue it both ways. Personally, i don't think the total combined scores of a multi-show winner really mean that much. There are so many other factors to take into a...

Gev - apart from the conundrum, i think Julian scored the best possible word in every round against Graham Nash. He may have lost on a crucial conundrum, but that's largely down to him entering the unknown - as prior to this game, he'd been so far ahead of his opponents that the conundrum didn't mat...
